“Okushiga Kogen hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2013

Just returned from spending a week skiing at Shiga Kogen ski area and staying at this hotel.
The ski area is great, wide, groomed runs with very few people to share the wonderful snow. However this is a popular resort for the Japanese and it is not catering for tourists who like some après ski life. Our hotel is quite isolated at the far end of the resort and there is limited options for dinner. The hotel has a Japanese and French restaurant with an expensive set menu, no other options. There is another hotel nearby, the Grand Phenix, which does have a reasonable Italian and Chinese restaurant but can be difficult to get a reservation. It is difficult to go else where for dinner.
We were provided with an excellent breakfast as part of our hotel package. There is also a pleasant bar beside the open fire however is closed each evening between 5 and 8 pm!! On summary good ski resort but very limited dinning options at this particular ski area of Shiga Kogen.

Room Tip: Select and pay for a room in the newer wing

I have stayed for five days now, and the skiing has been great. The hotel is at the end of the shiga kogan resort, and has 5 'skier only' chair lifts. The resort itself is ski-in ski-out but is isolated in so far as dining options for dinner is either a set menu at the hotel or a short walk across the car park to the grand Phoenix where al a carte options are available. Up side is the very friendly and helpful staff, older but comfortable and clean rooms. Ski in ski out, nice onsen, great skiing, a shuttle bus should you choose to snowboard. Downside is the food and drink bill might keep a small nations credit line running, but the quality is great.
Overall a uniquely Japanese experience in a big resort, that is just enough off the beaten track to lure me back again.

A friend and I escaped our families and work for a week skiing in January this year and stayed at Okushiga Kogen Hotel. We had a wonderful time with great snow, the slopes to ourselves, plenty of good venues to eat and some adventures to be had off piste as well.Truly recommend this place and the friendly staff at Okushiga Kogen Hotel.

We stayed here last ski season for 5 nights and are booked here for the same period this year. Yes as previously mentioned Okushiga is a bit issolated from any village. However, if it is the skiing you're after this place is great (no boarders on this part of Shiga-Kogen), with all the rest of Shiga-Kogen accessible either by bus or ski lift. We had a great stay here. Ski rental was good, rooms comfortable and warm, food excellent and a good bar service around an open fire. Great for families.

To get there best bet is to take the bus from Nagano and get off at the last stop.

After trawling the internet on places to stay in Shiga Kogen (21 different areas) we decided to stay at Okushiga Kogen Hotel. We wanted something nice. Our other options included the Grand Phenix (bit too expensive) or the Prince Hotel (didn't seem to get good reviews). So we stayed here. The hotel is very nice. We stayed in a superior room in the new building, for 8 nights it was 126,000 YEN per person incl breakfast. There is a limited amount of English speaking staff but they are all very friendly. In this hotel are two restaurants, the French restaurant which was very nice and the Japanese restaurant which was nice too but a bit plain in terms of decor etc. Breakfast was buffet (japanese and western) for about 4 of the mornings and a-la-carte for the remainder. For dinner, because the shuttles stop running around 7:30pm, we were limited to our hotel and the hotel about 50m away - the Grand Phenix. There are no taxis like in Hakuba. The grand phenix is very nice, more so than the Okushiga kogen hotel. They have a Japanese/Chinese combined restaurant as well as an Italian restaurant. Between the two hotels we ate dinner over the time we stayed here. Dinner is a bit on the expensive side, compared to other resorts you can stay at - for instance a decent dinner for two will be anywhere from 8,000 YEN - 18,000 YEN depending on if you order a bottle of wine etc. There aren't the night clubs/bars etc like Hakuba or Niseko though.

In terms of skiing Shiga Kogen is pretty awesome. Because the majority of it is interlinked we skiied from the hotel door to the top of Okushiga and then down across Yakebiti and across to Ichinose. One day we also took the shuttle across to Yoketiyama which is 2,300m above sea level and the scenery here was fantastic.

Okushiga-Kogen hotel was just as we had expected from the web-site which is always a bonus. Rooms spotless, with windows you can open, love the fresh mountain air!!Food was delicious in the hotel, try the French restaurant for a real treat. Ski hire was easy, some staff speak English & were extremely hospitable. Onsen a must! Wonderful after a day skiing. Situated perfectly at the end of the 21 or so villages, skiing a blast. Get the 'lift passport' & set youself the challenge of skiing from all lifts, getting stamps as you do.Shuttle buses prompt & plentiful as only Japanese ski resorts can do. Would highly recommend this hotel & the whole Shiga Kogen ski experience.
