I visited Tranquebar in April 2014. As of now, except for Fort, Churches and the Collector's Residence theres nothing much to see there- the whole former dutch enclave can be covered in 3-4 hours.
Tranquebar should be better described as a 'picnic spot' rather than as a place where one could stay for a holiday. There are no shops selling curios or handicrafts, not even a small eatery where you can buy yourself a glass of cold coffee. Except for a few local visitors, the area largely appears to be desolate.
'Bungalow on the Beach', a hotel run by Neemrana Resorts also bore a deserted look. When I went there the guards politely said "No - No" indicating there was nothing there. I figured it was a seasonal hotel- just functioning during the tourist season.
My personal suggestion, is to stay in Pondicherry, hire a cab to Tranquebar and return the same day.
