“Take a break for lunch and eat here”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Took a break from driving and heard this was a great place to eat.
We were not dissapointed. Place is not fancy but staff were friendly and
the food we had was fresh as could be and fantastic. Beers are ice cold,
tables out on the lawn overlooking the bay. Your missing out if you don't stop
for a bite. Mussels are fresh that morning and lots of them. I would recommend this
restaurant for a great lunch and a break from the drive. Cheers,

Oh and 31 express, Its a tiny little establishment....not meant to service 125 bus tourons.
The local staff there were more than friendly so I hope others perceive your review to be useless.

This is to 31 Express Madison--Being a local resident of the area and an employee of The Chowder House I'm so sorry you had a disagreeable experience with the restaurant.I do recall how busy our restaurant was that afternoon due to the tragedy Our restaurant was filled to capacity and our staff were doing their best to accommodate our guests by making sure all our facilities were available to them first. As for being suggested to go to our Comfort Station at our First Station two kilometers down the road (not Several Miles)shows that our staff were trying to also accommodate you by giving you another alternative since we weren't capable of helping at that time.We do our best to make all our visitors feel welcome and to enjoy our beautiful village and it's surroundings

“These people don't deserve your business”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

We were temporarily stranded on a Sunday afternoon in Neil's Harbor--with at least 125 others by my count--when a horrible tour bus accident closed the Cabot Trail in both directions for over 4 hours. There was no way to detour around the scene--so we settled in to make the wait. Neil's Harbor is a lovely little town--and the Chowder House is perched on a point with plenty of parking. Many families were packed into those parking spaces--and some, like us, eventually needed the facilities. But we were turned away by the Chowder House staff--told to go to the local fire station unless we wanted to sit down and order a meal. Rather than showing some humanity and good will to the crowd that had gathered, they chose to exercise their usual "restrooms are for customers only" rule. We did eventually find the facilities at the fire station several miles away--but the fact we had to do so under such circumstances was/is unacceptable. Chowder House had a chance to show some of the friendliness Cape Breton is known for--but they blew it. It was the topic of many conversations with our fellow travelers--all of whom share our pledge never to return. Really disgusting behavior for a place that depends on word-of-mouth to stay in business.

“One Small Suggestion in Lobster Heaven”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

I was searching for the quaint and unpretentious lobster shack in the fisherman's harbour when my new Australian friend recommended Chowder House, I imagined this might be the place. Chowder House is a 20 minute drive from Keltic Lodge. It's a perfect little place for a relaxed and easy going seafood dinner with views and red checkered picnic tables.

Yes, the seafood chowder is hearty and honest. But the lobster dinner....well my friends, here's the scoop. I think it was fresh but I am not sure. It was seriously overcooked. The fries and vegetables won't win any fans here but hey, who cares, we are here for the lobster.

The waiter advised the cook about overcooking the lobster so you might see a difference if you give this place a chance. Finally, the beer was nice and cold :)

“This is the place for fresh seafood”
Reviewed 27 June 2014 via mobile

We came for a late lunch with our two kids. We wanted a whole lobster experience. That was on the dinner menu- so we came back about 3 pm for that- and it was worth it. Fresh, tasty, and with a view of the sea. We also had their chowder, biscuits, poutine, hot dog and chicken. All very tasty. Service was friendly and helpful. It is a simple, low-key place- wood tables in a covered porch. There were outside tables too- near a lighthouse turned ice cream shop- with beautiful views of the Atlantic. We also liked that they are run by the fishermans coop.
