“Pleasant place to stay”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

We wanted to stay at a gassho-zukuri during our stay in Shirakawa-go rather than a regular hotel/inn, but most places were booked up by the time we started looking. Luckily for us, Juemon was still available. We had a really nice stay here. The owners were polite, courteous and helpful. The house itself was traditional and comfortable and the location is perfect - a bit more removed from the village so that it was quieter (and closer to nature - we definitely saw a small fox in the fields around the house a few times), but still within walking distance to all of the sights. Everything was very clean (as one would expect in Japan!) and our breakfast and dinner, which were included with our stay, were absolutely fantastic. Both meals were some of our favourite meals during our 2.5 week stay in Japan. The owners were very helpful - they accommodated our earlier breakfast request (we had to catch a bus to Takayama early on the morning we left) and even gave us a lift to the bus station. I would definitely recommend a stay here!

We decided to stay over night in Shirakawa-go and this Minshuku turned out to be great. The village is not very big, and everything is within walking distance. We got there around midday and dropped our bags at the Minshuku. We then spent the day exploring. The room costs includes dinner and breakfast. So in the evening we returned to have dinner, which was traditional Japanese, on tatami mats. The owner played a traditional Japanese instrument while we dined. This area is know for its Hida beef, it melts in your mouth. The dinner was very good, and you cooked your beef on a magnolia leaf, over a Konro grill.
Bathroom and facilities are separate, and are very clean, it was very cool to brush your teeth in the morning and look over the fields. The bathroom, is as expected in a Minshuku, hand held showers with stool and a small bath.
The room we had was great, as is with all traditional Japanese rooms, there was a small table and we were greeted with a pot of green tea and a red bean cake. and while we were at dinner they set up our futons for the night.
Breakfast, also very traditional, and very good, with lots of different dishes to try.

We reserved a one night stay at Juemon through Shirakawa-go Tourist Association. The owner was very friendly and spoke very little English. She entertained us with shamisen, a Japanese string instrument, during dinner. The stay included both breakfast and dinner. Both meals were filling home cooking. We had a nice time and would recommend Juemon.
