“Warm and welcoming Japanese hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

I stayed at the Grand Hotel Daisetsu this past fall. I chose the hotel because of the proximity to Asahi-dake (the tallest mountain in Japan) which I had come to climb. Even before I arrived, I had encountered their wonderful service as one of the front desk agents tried ever so hard to help me with my booking. The is a bus that runs from Asahikawa airport to directly outside the hotel (about 1:15 driving time) but there are only three services each day so plan ahead.

I had a tatami (Japanese style) room with great views over Asahi-daki. The room was clean and comfortable (if a little dated in style). There are both indoor and outdoor onsen which we great after a long day of trekking, I had breakfast and dinner in the hotel each day and the food was great. There is free wifi in the lobby area. The hotel is in a remote location and there are no convenience stores nearby so if you need anything in particular, bring it with you. There is a small shop in the hotel and of course vending machines for drinks (including beer).

I highly recommend the hotel to anyone wanting great service in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front of the hotel which will allow for views of Asahi-dake

1. Great location: located just a distance away from the main town area and steps away from the winter show. Right in beautiful Daisetsu mountains.

2. Huge rooms: had the jap room which was huge with a seperate bathroom area (bath tub and the sink was outside the bathroom which makes it super convenient). There's robes in all sizes, yellow for gers, blue for guys.Free access to the onsen (gers and guys seperate), huge onsen with 2 big onsens indoors and 1 outdoors. Tatami bed is very comfortable (esp for one who does not like sleeping on hard surfaces/ floor/ campsite)

3. The specialty shop in the lobby sells many different specialty food.

4. Limited english spoken here so make sure you have instructions in jap or printed before you arrive.

5. The buffet dinner is FANTASTIC though on the expensive side but there was free flow of sashimi, paper pot, prawns, curry, udon, ramen, barbaque beef, tampura, lots of fruits (which is scarce and expensive in japan). all the possible jap food you can think of. Breakfast was scrumptous too with a huge variety.

I just returned from a trip to Hokkaido, Japan. I stayed in the Grand Hotel Daisetsu for 2 nights. It was a very enjoyable stay. The service was excellent and staff extremely courteous and helpful. We booked a Japanese style room on the top floor, which was very spacious and clean (see attached photos). I loved the decor of the room , with its intricate pottery and calligraphy paintings. The public bath was one of the largest I have been to in Japan, with about 10 showers and 3 indoor hot pools with its respective temperatures clearly displayed. It was also very well equipped, with bathing foams, shampoo, moisturisers, face creams, cotton wool, etc , I was pleasantly surprised to see hair brushes in a electronic sterilizer! There were also curlers and hair dryers. The best part was the rotemboro (outdoor spa), which was basically a rectangular granite pool with hot spring water, outdoors, and surrounded by pine wood fencing, bushes and pebbles. It was peaceful and totally relaxing. Dinner was also very satisfying (see picture below) which included a steam hot pot and grilled fish. Our beds were laid out on the tatami mat while we were at dinner. Service couldnt have been better.

  • Liked — Very spacious public bath and bedroom. Quiet rotemboro. Good service.
  • Disliked — Food was good but exactly the same for the 2 nights we stayed there.
