“Cozy Home as Farmstay”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We checked into the Akane-yado Farmstay after a long drive from Asahidake. The drive there was very scenic, passing through Biei and Furano.

Akane-yado is located within a vast area of farmlands of all kinds of crops, mainly grains, particularly rice. The usual way of navigating through GPS which is based on the reference of the destination's telephone was not very useful. It was later that we found out that the Akane-yoda has a 'Mapcode'. It will be best to obtain the map-code if you are driving there. However it was serendipity when we got lost there. While asking for directions, we drove through rolling plains of many shades of green-fields at various stages of maturity. Some were just ploughed, others had seedlings and yet some were bearing grains. It was a treat, getting lost in the area of minor roads.

It is a very cosy and comfortable stay at the property. We arrived and were quickly checked-in and given the tour of the facility and the house-rules. The living lounge was a very comfortable place for all the guests to mingle with jazz and new-age music in the background. The music was a very nice touch, we felt. The other guest-accessible areas are the dining room, the indoor patio and the outdoor deck just outside the house. The beverages are provided in the pantry area and some premium beverages and alcoholic drinks in the fridge and bar are chargeable. The rule is to register your consumption as you help yourself. Trust is the word. We find that very prevalent all across Hokkaido.

We arranged for our dinner and breakfast to be caters and we found both meals to be very well thought of and delicious.

We have stayed in many home-stays and we find this to be one of the best managed and clean. Bath and toilet facilities are shared commons. The rooms are basic but comfortable and very clean. When the rules are observed by all guests, the stay is made so comfortable and pleasant. Especially in the farm environment. Do observe the rules about venturing into farmlands and properties belonging to the farmers. They are making a livelihood and it is important not to disrupt their work. Also, it is not polite to step into their farms without proper preparation. We may introduce parasites and organisms that may not be good for the plants. The Japanese take their farming very seriously. Same with the agricultural economies like Australia and New Zealand.

Room Tip: You'd have a choice of tatami room or regular bed.

Kamifurano is such a beautiful place. Akane yado sits in agricultural land that stretches far beyond. .. The changing colors of the Tokachi mountain range is mesmerizing and a photographer's delight. It is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle. Joe San, the owner of Akane Yado speaks English and came across as friendly and genuinely nice. We enjoyed the meals cooked by Joe's wife. We enjoyed our one night stay. It also helped that other guests, a Japanese and a happy family from Malaysia were nice and friendly.
The only unpleasant experience was that we did not have a good sleep as we could hear sound from the next room.

For city people like my partner and I, Akane-Yado definitely is a wonderful place to enjoy the nature and to experience the countryside. It’s located about 10 minutes drive from Naka-Furano JR station, and there is a free shuttle bus service leaving from the JR station to the guesthouse at 17:15. We waited for a while upon arriving in the JR station coming in from Asahikawa, then we hopped on the bus. We were stunned by the view when the driver told us that we already have arrived our destination. It’s a beautiful Japanese style house surrounded by farmland. The sunset is spectacular, and the sky is so blue. There are benches and sun chairs at the backyard of the house, which you can just ly down and enjoy the nature. We stayed at a triple room, it was not spacious but acceptable. Bathroom and toilets are both shared between other guests in the house. They are all well maintained and clean. Jo, the owner of the guesthouse is a friendly man and speaks good English, as well as knowledgable about the locals, he’d be happy to assist. Breakfast was served in a traditional Japanese way, delicious and filling, glad to start my day with that. Although we only stayed for one night there, it was memorable. You meet people from all around the world in this small house and share the same dream of exploring Hokkaido. It was incredible.

Staying in Akaneyado feels like visiting a friends farm. Mr Joe is a really nice person. His son and daughter are adorable. They have a way to make guest feel welcome and comfortable. It also helped that all the other guest were friendly and I have a good time chatting and joking.

The rooms are clean and neat, nothing fancy. But that is what home stay is all about.

The only catch is that there toilet and bathroom are shared among the guests, which I am ok with.

Would I go back to stay at Akaneyado on my next visit... a definite YES.

We had stayed at Akaneyado “夕茜舎”on 19th Jun 2011 with Mr Joe-san, his wife and a pair of their lovely son and daugther, who are great people! They provide pick-up to and from NakaFurano Train Station.

Mrs Joe-san had picked us from NakaFurano Train Station and the car ride to their country-inn was spectacular. We were soaked with the beautiful sight of the nature with greenery and tranquility of the vast farmland. At dusk, the sunset was beyond description while we strolled the neighbouring farm. After dinner, we just sat at the patio and enjoy the breezy and starry night. It was a wonderful experience for city dwellers like us to appreciate and enjoy the country-side lifestyle - at least once in a life time.

We enjoyed the nice meals very much {beef stew for dinner and saba grilled fish for breakfast}, prepared by both Joe-san and his wife, although Mr Joe-san called them simple home-cooked meals. We thoroughly enjoyed them as they were very delicious and both meals were set and decorated with detailed cutlery of side dishes and his continually serving of hot green tea. They are a bunch of very lovely, warm and hospitable people!

The next morning, Mr Joe-san drove and dropped us off at Farm Tomita. And to mention the highlight and saga of our stay, Mr Joe-san had been a kind soul who went the extra mile to come to our aid and rescue, when my husband discovered that he had lost his passport together with the 14 days Nationwide JR Pass in it - unknowingly at NakaFurano Train Station while we were waiting for pick-up.

My husband was panicky and we called Mr Joe-san for help. He searched his house and car but could not find them. In within 10 minutes, he came back to Farm Tomita and drove us to NakaFurano Train Station to find but to no avail. He then drove us to the police station to report the lost and played a vital role to be our interpreter. Without his help, we would be running like a headless chicken and would encounter problem in communicating with the police and the train station staff.

At the police station, the passport was found with the JR Pass intact! Mr Joe-san has been our hero and benefactor!

We strongly recommend all to stay in this country-inn with such lovely and good people!
Akaneyado “夕茜舎”is a good property with fantasic scenery, good meals and most importantly, good people who take good care of you and willing to go the extra mile and have your interest at heart !

"Thank You, Mr Joe-san of Akaneyado 夕茜舎 - You are our benefactor"

Room Tip: There are rooms with the mountain and sun set view

We strongly recommend Akane-yado Country Inn because the owner, Mr Joe-san is a very kind soul. The sunset and starry night views from the patio were fantasic and both the dinner and breakfast cooked by Mr and his wife, were very delicious and nice. The hightlight of our stay was the episode of a good nature and kind soul of Mr Joe-san had protray, and he had become our Saviour and Hero.My husband, not knowingly had dropped his passport at Naka Furano Station while waiting for pick up by Joe-san to his country inn. We stayed on 19th June 2011 for 1 night which was the 3rd Day of our 14 Days Free & Easy Trip in Japan. The next morning on checked out, Mr Joe-san sent us out to Farm Tomita. In the farm, my husband realised that he had lost his passport with the 14 Days JR Pass in it. We called Mr. Joe-san and he came to the Tomita farm in within 10 mins and drove us to Naka Furano Station to search for the passport but to no avail. He then drove us to the police station and became our interpretator to communicate with the police. The police found the passport with the JR Pass still in tact. We were very grateful to Mr Joe-san and we are still grateful to him. He had taken an extra mile in his service to extend his valuable help to us when we were so lost then, and he had saved our Japan holidays as we still had 11 days to travel. Without his help to find the passport, our holidays would be ruin and cut short. We sincerely expressed our heartfelt gratitude and wish to say: "Thank You Very Much, Mr Joe-san" Everything is beautiful when there are such nice people around us! ... more   less
