“Great Service, lovely hotel!”
Reviewed 15 June 2010

We stayed in Hotel Viola after staying in another Australian run lodge for 3 days. This is by all means a much better experience, and we only need to pay 1/3 of the price per night.

In the other very expensive but modern design lodge, we have no service, no people at reception, no pick up after a hard day of skiing, no one to get you clean towels even if you requested for them.

Hotel Viola gave us the best service, pick up and send us to the lift/bus station everyday, we didn't have to carry our heavy ski. They would recommend and drive us to restaurants for evening meal. They have small but clean onsen that we used every night. Rooms are spacious by Japanese standard. We just love it. The Japanese owner, as mentioned by other reviews does not speak a lot of English but other hotel staff do and they made every effort to ensure our stay is comfortable and enjoyable.

I didn't want to book this hotel when I was doing my research because it seem quite far away from everything else! But location is not a problem because the hotel staff will drive you to where you want!! Just make arrangements with them in advance!

Love it. regretted paying so much staying in the other lodge. Would come back if I come to Hakuba again!

We booked this hotel through an Australian agent in Jindabyne because we were on a budget and it was the least expensive of accomodation available. Because of this, we were not expecting much, just a warm bed for the week. We were very pleasently surprised however to find a very comfortable, clean room (very large by Japanese standards) with views overlooking the slopes and abundant amenities. We also had our own ensuite, TV and fridge and the beds were very good to sleep on. The hotel facilities included a large drying room, breakfast/dinner restaurant and a free massage chair. Best of all......the place was equiped with its very own Onsen (Hot Spring Bath). As the hotel is quite small and private we had the (his and hers seperate baths) to ourselves for almost every visit. The doors in the Onsen area can be opened to let in the fresh snow air and the baths are very hygenic, being cleaned every day like clockwork.
We knew we had breakfast included with our accomodation and expected toast & cereal like we received the year before (when we stayed at a lodge run by Australians), Instead we were greated with a different meal every morning. Breakfast always started with fresh yoghurt, fruit, cereal, bread, juice & coffee and ended with a main plate varying with eggs cooked a different way each morning, sausages, bacon, hash browns and curly fries. These breakfasts are very large and really gear you up for a day of snowboarding. The wait staff are always so friendly and happy and are constantly filling up your coffee and asking if they can bring more bread etc. They are so nice, so lovely that I felt as though I could never say thank you enough (ended up buying the staff and owner chocolates and biscuits ). On the last day for breakfast, staff went to the special effort of making us an extra side dish of french toast with blueberries .....so delicioius.
Mr.Maruyama the hotel owner does not speak much english but he is so happy to try and help in any way, he drove us to other restaurants for dinner every chance he could to save us walking in the cold. He was always very smily and friendly and made us feel at home.
This hotel is in walking distance to Happo ski lifts and only a short bus ride from Hakuba 47 which is the largest (and in our opinion best ski resort). A number of restaurants are also close by (Steven's Mexican is great) and a convenience store is just up the road.
Internet access is complimentary both wireless in room and on the hotel computer downstairs.
We absolutly reccomend this hotel. The service is like no other we have received, more personal and more attention to detail than any five star accomodation we have stayed at. OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!

Large rooms by Japanese standard, very clean, onsen in basement. Staff were very helpful, driving us to lifts/gondola stations/restaurants.
Free internet access.
Did not try the restaurant. Breakfast was Continental style, with breads/cereals followed by eggs/frittata. Perhaps not plentiful, but we were always given more toast when we asked.
Located 5 minutes walk away from Happo village, great to ski back to when enough snow.

I was a little bit hesitant about booking Hotel Viola, as their English website is pretty patchy and outdated, however their Japanese website is great for looking at pictures and provides a really accurate picture of what to expect. The hotel is in Happo One, Hakuba- a fabulous skiing town where the 1998 Winter Olympics were held. I have nothing but praise for this hotel- we caught the train and bus into the Happo Bus Station, and with a quick phone call, they had us picked up in the minivan in 5 minutes. They are incredibly welcoming and so willing to help in every aspect. I got quite sick with bronchitis and not only did they make arrangements for me to see the doctor in Hakuba, they drove me there and arranged with the staff at the surgery to call when I was done so they could pick me up. They drove us to the ski lifts each day, and did so twice in one day when we accidentally forgot our lift passes! So just ignore the apparent distance from the slopes (closest lifts are still only a 5 minute walk, but it can seem insurmountable when its blowing a gale and snowing!) because they will drive you there, and there is a free shuttle bus that takes you back to your hotel run by the resort at large. I would also recommend paying extra for breakfast and dinner- both can be Japanese or Western (we stuck with Western)- the owners son is the chef and we had cooked breakfast (plus cereal, yoghurt, fruit and juice) and a four course (appetiser, entree, main and dessert) dinner every day which were gourmet and delicious beyond our expectations. And its lovely to be looked after so well after a day out skiing! There is also a great onsen open for free 24 hours just behind the lobby area, which it just the thing for tired muscles.
The rooms themselves are spotless, spacious (especially by Japanese standards) and ours (room 301) had an amazing view of the slopes and the night skiing.
This hotel has been by far my favourite of our entire Japan trip, and I would recommend it unreservedly. Thanks to the owner (Makato) and his great staff (especially Nakano) who made our stay so enjoyable.
The hotel website (English version is here) http://www.hotel-viola.com/violaeLR.html

Enjoy!

  • Liked — The friendly staff, the incredible food and views, and the onsen after a hard days skiing
  • Disliked — distance from the chairlift (which is of no consequence since the hotel will take you there by minibus when you want to go)
