Such an enjoyable stay for our first trip to Hakuba! We arrived at 2am, and everything was organized from our ski tickets to visitor brochures. The twin room we stayed in was clean and a lot bigger than what I was expecting for Japan, this worked out well considering we were traveling with boards and large bags.
I can't say enough good things about the staff, they were so lovely and helpful with everything from restaurant bookings to organizing luggage delivery and a joy to chat with. It was honestly lovely to come back from the mountains and see smiling faces.
One of our favourite things were the discounted onsen tickets, only 200yen from the hotel reception and the onsen is only a 3 minute walk away.
As for location, lots of good restaurants within a 5 minute walk - I love Sarugaku across the road, literally a 30 second walk. Shakespeare Hotel is also a main stop on the red line for the free shuttle so it's really easy to get around, plus right outside the hotel is a stop for the free resort shuttles so we had no problem going to a different mountain everyday. Just stand at the stop and get on the bus to whatever resort you fancy. It really was that easy.
This is not a luxury hotel but its clean, hassle free and is near to shuttle stops, shops, restaurants and an onsen. I can't recommend it enough, and will definitely be staying here on my next trip back to Hakuba.

Okay, so the hotel itself was nice enough, the staff were genuinely helpful had a great experience there. The location was fantastic as it well placed in relation to buses, snowfields, bars and restaurants...it's not far from everything. Good value for money to boot. The only problem I encountered was our first triple share room...it was in essence a nicely decorated shoe box, it would be fine for a couple of nights but by the end of the week I was really feeling it...but hey, we were out a lot of the time anyways. Our second triple share room - as we had to stay an extra night due to massive snow falls - was more like it and at full rate only costs about $70.00 each a night (note to self...ask for the suite next time). Breakfast was pretty good, rooms were clean, beds were comfortable and staff were great...all in all I enjoyed my stay here.

We found an absurdly cheap ski+lodge deal (using our own private car) that included lift tickets, rentals, onsen admission, dinner and breakfast, and a one night stay at this hotel. The price alone warranted a 4+ rating, but for me the overall value bumped it up to 5. I'd rather not quote the price to be fair to the hotel owners, but I will say that I found the package on a popular Japanese language ski trip site.

This place isn't a luxury resort and doesn't pretend to be. Rather, it's a place where you can get decent sleep and have good, simple meals. The rooms are indeed dated, but they're clean and have a surprising amount of space (for Japan).

For skiers and borders, they have all the expected amenities: locker / changing room, drying room, and rental shop within the property. The rental shop offers waxing for 1000 yen, which is quite a deal for Japan. Our lift tickets were for Iwatake, which was about a 5 minute drive away.

BTW our deal included early check-in (8am) and/or late check-out (12pm) for a per person fee, but we did not use it.

Overall, I'd recommend this place for small groups or couples who are looking for a decent value and are planning to drive up in their own car.

In 2013 my daughter and I stayed here for our first trip to Hakuba. We initially booked here as it is situated on the main street of Echoland where a number of Restaurants operate in the winter, and it is one of the main shuttle busstops.

We enjoyed everything about the Hotel...the snowing 2am arrival, the quaint little room with view of snow, breakfast, the location, pick up for ski resort shuttles, the staff, the amenities etc etc.... We loved our first experience so much we returned this year (Jan 2014) with the rest of the family.

On this occasion there was 2 bad points...my husband thought the beds were too hard and got very little sleep and we were in a room that seemed to attract all of the cigarette smoke from outside and downstairs. In saying this there were still alot of positives...the staff remembered us from last year this excited them alot. Nothing is ever too much bother for them!

Our arrival envelope was filled with helpful info on surrounding restaurants, things to do, Onsens etc.Breakfast was good with some unusual offerings and standard ones, all of the staff were hospitable, always available and willing to help with any enquiry.

The downstairs drying room is good but can get overcrowded sometimes. There is a washing machine and dryer in the laundry beside that seemed to be available whenever we needed it.

Keep in mind this is not a "Modern Chic" Hotel it is a simple Hotel with clean and tidy facilities, great staff, good food and a fantastic location. Something also about the English style that sets it apart.

Would we stay there again....definitely and most probable for 2015.

Room Tip: If you are wanting to stay away from smoke then rooms in the adjoining building and not the main Hot...

Hotel is clean and located really conveniently on the main road. All buses stop there so it's easy to explore all the ski fields and they're free for boarders and skiers. Rooms are pretty small but perfectly adequate and showers are very good. Drying room in basement and cafe for breakfast with full buffet which we had included is just next door. Breakfast does get a little boring as EVERYTHING from the one type of cereal and the scrambled egg are exactly the same every day. But it was free, convenient and decent with friendly staff. Hotel staff were great, except (as per previous review) the one Australian girl who wasn't ever really interested in helping and was very unknowledgable about pretty much anything you asked her. Close to many local bars and restaurants and overall an enjoyable stay.

Four of us Aussies stayed here in mid Feb and it was the first time to the Hakuba area.

The Good:
The hotel was pretty standard size, the staff were willing to assist with most simple enquiries (best not to always take their advice as gospel and consult google if you want to be sure about things like bus timetables etc)

Drying room was hot and dries all gear with no worries each night.

Onsen within five minutes walk - TIP make sure you grab towels from the staff, or the onsen will charge you for towel rental. And also make sure you 'hide' your towel under your clothes in the basket at the onsen change room as in my experience some (Probably Aussie) stole mine as they didn't have their own!

Breakky was a nice touch in a separate area to the main hotel, although I would have liked to see a little more variation each day, changing one bean dish to a celery dish the next day just didn't cut it for me, but I guess you get what you pay for! The food quality was very good though.

Internet - Very fast free wifi.

Location - close to a few great restaurants, the hotel restaurant was surprisingly good (a bit dear though) More places to eat nearby in Happo if you took a cab for about 1500Yen.

The Bad/Average:

If you are a non smoker, after a stay here you may as well take it up. Very poor ventilation and smoke from other rooms and I believe the office (they sit there fagging on all day) was quite unacceptable as far as I was concerned. Two people staying in our group were smokers and they even found it really bad!! (upstairs rooms were where we were, other rooms may not be so bad?)

Transport - If you like a good hours power walk, you can hoof it to the nearest resort, not the 10 minute walk claimed by our tour operator.

There is a stop for the bus outside the hotel, if a bus comes, and if the bus is not 110% packed like an Indian Kolkata Train. Also be aware if you miss the last bus from any of the resorts at the end of the day, or if you are in the queue and don't make it on the bus - you have to cab (if you can get one) or walk. We had various experiences both getting to and from the resorts. Mostly bad.

Ice - Please be VERY careful if the front entrance is Iced up, they don't seem to do much to stop the icing up and there were never any signs. We saw at least 3 people come down hard. Also watch the foyer wooden polished floors with ski boots on, we saw a few nasty accidents in the brief times we were at reception. Kind of funny if it wasn't such an OHS Hazard!

Overall we may have been expecting too much from the area, but we had a good time on the mountains, there was certainly plenty of variety in the terrain, hotel was acceptable but we wont be back in a hurry.

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from smokers if you don't smoke, I think there were outside rooms but I...

Fab little hotel on the main street of Hakuba. Homely feel and good facilities e.g. Dry room for skis etc. Amazingly helpful staff. Just a quick phone call from the train station and they picked us up free of charge. They also rang to help us book dinner reservations and were generally awesome. Free regular shuttle buses to go to ski resorts stops right outside. Just a note that there is no housekeeping so you need to ask for clean towels and make your own bed.
