“Powder heaven sprinkled with great atmosphere!”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Went in January, just after New Year's eve and had a fantastic time. 5mn walk from the ski lifts, Hakuba House is ideally located close to Happo One. Grant, the manager is very knowledge on the area and will indicate, if not guide you, to where the best snow is. In APAC, compared to New-Zealand or Australia, hands down the best snow conditions I experienced.
And don't forget to make a trip to nearby Cortina...awesome place!!
The house in itself is great, has a very cosy atmosphere and is neighbouring a large traditional Onsen. Not too big, I enjoyed socialising with the other guests around some Mulled Wine or a game of pool, but above all the fire place was the biggest winner. It has a family feeling as Ai cooked us some local specialties and we could also enjoy some good quality Sushi/Sashimis and some great Ramen.
Looking forward to go back again!

We have had a wonderful holiday staying at Hakuba House. We would sincerely like to pass on our thanks to Grant and Ai who were the perfect hosts. Their local knowledge, friendly advice and relaxed attitude made our stay a pleasure.

Hakuba House itself was so convenient with ski in / ski out to some fabulous slopes. The room was neat, tidy and well presented. The variety of choices at breakfast kept us going throughout the day and the cold Asahi on tap was the perfect way to finish off a day on the snow.

We are already planning our next trip back and looking forward to again experiencing the wondeful hospitality at Hakuba House!

The website advertises a delicious breakfast with homemade bread, healthy continental selections and a hot option every day. In reality, this consisted of pieces of bread cut so small you had to put your fingers into the toaster to retrieve. Healthy continental selections were the usual spread of vegemite and jam and the supposed "hot option" was either a boiled egg, sausage or slice of french toast that had been sitting out since 7am (so get there early).

The ski in ski out option is hugely exaggerated. This is only if you fancy skiing down the road and that's only if it has been snowing and you manage to beat the road plows. Getting back is an option for only those who can ski through the trees at the back of the resort. In reality, there is a 15 minute uphill walk from the nearest chairlift.

The rooms themselves were clean and tidy but was frustrated that there was only one powerpoint in the whole room, so it was a perpetual juggle between the heater, phone chargers, hairdryer etc. Small details count - empty the bins everyday like you promise and maybe some english instructions for the heater would be nice.

I did not find the staff particularly friendly or helpful apart from the occasional lift at dinner. They all seemed too busy eating or hanging out in the bar. There was no advice provided on which buses to catch locally to/from resorts or even mention that sometimes that involved two buses.

Having worked a season at a lodge in Japan ourselves, perhaps our expectations were too high. I felt like we had a much better experience in other more traditional Japanese lodgings, even with the language barrier. This was definitely an average place to stay and I wouldn't bother returning with the huge range of alternative options available.

Atmosphere was great, beds were very comfortable, the home cooked meals were fantastic! You can ski from the front door :) Highly recommend it. Grant and Ai really looked after everything we needed, made life easy.

Crosses the line with mundane colours. Ski-in/Ski-out is an exaggeration and totally dependent on overnight snow to ski down the road in the morning before the plows and your ability to ski out of bounds via a tree run to get back. Breakfast offering was poor with little range or variance over the several day stay. Helpful staff if not particularly friendly. Appreciated the pick up and drop off, as well as nightly runs to town when required. Serene wooded location with pricey outdoor onsen (¥2800/1hr BYO towel) next door. Aussie owners/operators could do well to take some prompts from the locals on how to deliver a great alpine lodge experience, otherwise it will remain unremarkable. Thanks for the stay, will try somewhere else next time.

This was our third stay at Hakuba House and we again had a wonderful time. Grant and Ai and their team of Rebecca Richard, Hayden and Fernando made us welcome and and met all of our requests whether it was assistance with restaurant bookings or a lift to train. There was a great atmosphere on the bar in the evenings and Ai's meals especially the roast on Australia Day were also great.

We were travelling with two of our grand children aged 10 & 4 and they were made to feel welcome with nothing being too much trouble.

We hope to be able to stay again in the future.

Grant and Ai are doing a fabulous job of running Hakuba House. Grant has a very relaxed approach to running things, which suited our holiday perfectly. Nothing seemed like too much of a bother for Grant, from our last minute plea for a pickup from the info centre for check in - to stocking the bar with coke zero just to compliment my poison of choice without me even asking. They were just some of the little touches that made staying here such a pleasure! Others included: home cooked meals, special shuttles out to Cortina on a powder day and vegemite on the breakfast table. Ai’s home cooking every other night was delicious and the nights where a meal isn’t offered in house, Grant shuttles everyone to their restaurant of choice. Wadano seemed a little but out of the way at times, with our friends staying in Echoland where most of the bar and restaurant action is happening, but Grant does a great job of mediating this with shuttle services for check in/check out, off night dinners and 4pm pickups from the lift base on request. Plus there are plenty of drinking spots and restaurants to choose from in Wadano as well. The rooms are clean, fresh towels are provided every few days and the water pressure is amazing. On top of that, the bar has a fire place, bean bags and a pool table. Couldn’t ask for much more really. I wont be looking any further if I’m lucky enough to return to Hakuba next season.
