Family of 5 stayed in Jan 11. Everything was perfect from the snow to the hotel to the management of the resort. We really loved Double Black - having an intimate lounge and restaurant is great at the end of the day, and the food was superb. You must make sure you book for dinner tho as other residents from different lodges are also allowed to book here and it is popular !
Rooms are small but v clean and nicely fitted out. Connecting rooms also available for kids. Lovely onsen. Eugene, Kara, Cherie and crew do everything they can to make your stay worthwhile. Drop offs and pick ups from ski fields included. Free wifi also great as no tmany places offer this. Will definitely stay again.

My husband and i decided to escape the concrete of Tokyo for a White Christmas last year and headed to Hakuba and Double Black. It is a beautiful hotel recently acquired by the White Horse group and had been through a big renovation the previous year. This was clearly evident in the guest rooms which they had modelled in Japanese style with tatami mat flooring, sliding rice paper screen doors etc but had tastefully mixed with raised western beds to comfort the weary skiier... We stayed in their suite and were very happy with the room. It had a gorgeous outlook looking over the pine trees of the Wadano forest and was a lovely home away from home for Christmas.

The only downside would be that the hotel is not on the slopes (about a 5 -10 min drive) away and so you need to organise a pick up service - something the hotel were only too happy to organise for free, as well as a free shuttle service to the other slopes nearby. One of the major benefits of the hotel is that it has a lovely lounge/bar where weary skiiers can relax before dinner - somehting a little rare in Japanese hotels. The only other downfall would be that the whole hotel is run by Australians which in the middle of Japan seems a bit of a shame. Dont get me wrong, im australian and love to hear a familiar accent and friendly smile but it seemed a shame that they hadnt hired any local Japanese to help out around the place to help add more authenticity to the experience and a touch of local flavour.

I would highly recommend the Double Black again and are looking forward to the 2011/2012 season!

Fantastic holiday in Hakuba staying at Double Black...great service, good bunch of staff who all worked well together and were a lot of fun. Loved the breakfasts and the Aussie steak in the evening was as good as anything in Australia.

Apres ski happy hour in the bar using the hotel's wi-fi was a great way to relax as was taking an Onsen Japanese style bath afterwards. The rooms were clean and the beds were excellent.

The powder snow was awesome, take an back country tour, one of the best days skiing I've ever had....I'm converted !

We booked our trip to Japan and wanted to go to the snow without sacrificing too much of our holiday on 'lost' travel days. So we ruled out Niseko, and decided that Hakuba was the go. Best thing we could have done. The agent (aussie in Hakuba) booked our accomodation over the net for me in less than 5 minutes and we were locked in. It is literaly only 3.5hrs from Tokyo(bullet/bus) and you could be pulling on the ski's and getting a lift to the mountain. We arrived to an incredible sight. Snow everywhere. Cars buried over their roofs. It was dumping, and the forecast was a lot more to come. Arriving at the final bus stop, we were picked up in the hotel shuttle bus by the manager, Shaun. 5 minutes to the hotel. Quick check in and a nice hot shower. Then hit the bar for a beer with a cocktail chaser. Very good wine list and great bar staff. Rolly makes the drinks and Dean provides the gags. A few more quality beers wouldn't go astray, but thats only a minor issue for me as a beer lover. A very good restaurant is housed in the hotel which does western food very well. Great cooked breakfast is included in your room rate and great coffee which is hard to find. Only 5 minutes from the uncrowded slopes(surprising!) in the shuttle services run by the staff. Ski hire and lessons were organised for us with no fuss. After a day of pain for a useless skier which i am we headed to the hotel 'onsen'. Great view over the surrounding woods. Free internet on the premises comes in handy to keep up with any work issues etc. Short walk to many good restaurants. Or the staff are only too happy to recommend great places to see and eat in the area. We missed out on seeing the snow monkeys but will definately see them next January when will most certainly go back again. Really enjoyable and relaxing place. I was actually surprised, pleasantly. Can't recommend enough. Modern japanese/western feel, and great vibe. What more could you want. 7 days skiing, and plenty of time to check out some more of Japan in our 2 week break.

I was looking for a place to stay in Habuka with my wife, 14 yr old daughter and 75 yr old Aunt and found Double Black on the web. The booking process was very simple and relaxed as they have a informative website and helpful staff (Thanx Tony). All bus travel between Tokyo and the hotel was also organised by the booking agent. We ended up arriving at 3.30 in the morning due to plane issues and a very sleepy Sarah the manager stayed up to greet us! The hotel is comfortable and cosy. The beds are great - as I like hard mattresses. The Onsen was clean and the water pressure in the showers was good. Free internet access throughout the place too. The rooms are small but cosy and were always kept tidy by DB staff. The free shuttle services they offer makes life easy getting to and from the mountain if you can't make the walk, which isn't that far.
Being run by Ozzys the bar stocks Ozzy wines and although we ate out at the local restaurants DB serves western meals for the culinary homesick. One thing that really stood out for me was the western breakfast that comes as part of the accommodation fee. Really good B&Es as well as excellent coffee. Just what you need before a day in the powder! If you're looking for an authentic Japanese Hotel this is not for you but if you're keen to enjoy a bit of western comfort after a hard day in Hakuba powder look no further.
Well done Double Black , we'll be back for sure!

First time snowboarding in Japan and we needed all the help in booking, travel etc. The hotel website was so useful, covering the travel from Narita so well that the whole experience was seamless and very easy to follow. On arrival, the staff were very attentive and as helpful as possible to help settle in and locate the main lifts. The hotel was very tastefully decorated in the Japanese style and had male and female Onsen, Japanese baths, in house. The village itself was a little quiet compared with ski resorts in Europe or North America, but the hotel bar was nice enough.

Wow, good trip.

My first experience of Japan......fantastic.

Double Blackmade life very easy, great spot in the forest in Wadona in the Hakuba valley, walking distance to Hakuba One (pronouced Oh-ney) mountain and a short bus ride to a ridiculous amount of resorts (it seems that every person on Honshu has there own resort). They had there worst season in 26 years when I was there and I had knee deep and above dry powder twice in 7 days. Snow in japan is astonishing. Watching a mate create a bow wave of powder to his chest in a deep pocket was like a Warren Miller film, I kid you not!

The hotel was great, rooms where very neat "western japanese" style and the beds were FANTASTIC. the rooms had new bathrooms with remote control toilets (hmmm, Japan and it's toilets...) and are a reasonable size compared to elsewhere I stayed in Japan.

You get what you pay for in Japan, and this isn't budget ( but competitive) and worth every penny. western breakfast cooked to order everyday and GOOD COFFEE (Japan is not Italy) was enough reason alone.

Very snow sport oriented hotel, good equipment rooms, advice on the best resort for the conditions, lift to buses or the resort etc, tools for gear. The onsen is the bomb for end of day pain.

We ate (hmmm and drank) at a new restaurant every night and it was all easy to get to (i.e walk or short cab ride) and the staff new what was what in this department.

All in all worth it, and easy to get to, I got a mini bus up from Narita (about 5 hrs ride , arriving at 10pm in Hakuba after leaving sydney at 9 am) and back by bullet train (a little quicker but didn't suit my connection time inbound). you save two days travel going to hakuba compared to Niseko, with not much difference in the snow. I used those two days to check out Tokyo.

Cheers
