“Great location, lovely staff”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

We stayed for a week during peak snow season in a twin room with a bathroom. The facilities were clean and pretty spacious for Japan, with plenty of room for all our stuff and a deep bath/shower.
There was airconditioning (that we didn't use) and heating (which we did use), super warm blankets really comfy beds.
Breakfast in the morning is fairly rudimentary (cereal, juice, toast, tea and coffee) but there's plenty. Make sure you're on time, especially on a powder day!
Staff were super helpful with booking additional accomodation (we wanted to stay an additional day but they were full), recommending mountains each day, and helping with other attractions in the area. They speak fabulous English and Japanese.
It's walking distance from a convenience store, and a longer walk from a supermarket if you're eating on a budget.
Probably best to take ear plugs if you go during uni holidays - the only downside to our trip, not being party animals ourselves, was a big group of rowdy guests who would get in late at night after drinking and make a lot of noise.

I stayed at the MonkeyRider for a month with 10 mates of mine. We discovered it was perfectly located right near the heart of echoland, Hakuba. It's within walking distance (with skis or board) to multiple bus stops allowing you access to all the mountains without having to change at the Happo Bus Station. The Apres skiing was also great, just a few mins walk to echoland's nightclubs, pubs, and restaurants. Our favourite Apres activity was to just hangout in the large common room/bar, buy a beer and chat to Tony (the manager and font of local information).

We needed to grab a Taxi for access to the train station and supermarket (for all that cheap booze), but the 711 is just about close enough to walk to if you really need some cheap food.

The bedrooms and common areas where clean, and the bathrooms were immaculate. Although, you're expected to clean up after yourself (even if you were too drunk to remember doing it!).

My only gripe with the place is the lack of heating; the kitchen, showers, drying room and basement hallways were freezing cold, and the onsen style bath wasn't working. The remaining common room, first and second floor hallways and bedrooms were all well heated and comfortable.

Room Tip: All 3 rooms we occupied were great for the four weeks we stayed, although we only received linen as...

With the lack of central heating, I often have the problem of being too cold at guesthouses in Japan. However, at Monkey Rider, it was warm everywhere--in the halls, dining room and bathrooms. In our twin room, we actually had to turn the heater off at night since it was so cozy. The room was spacious, as was the living room area, kitchen, drying room, etc. Great location for easy access to shuttles, restaurants and convenience stores.

Headed across to Hakuba for a Snowboarding trip with 3 buddies. We stayed at Monkeyrider for 5 nights and had a great time. The staff looked after us and had great English and Japanese skills, which is always welcomed in a country where the native language is a must! The rooms were clean, the atmosphere was fun, but you could retire away and remove yourself from it anytime. All in all a 5 star trip. Thanks guys!

Traveled to Japan for the first time and absolutely fell in love with Hakuba.
The accommodation at MonkeyRider was perfect for us, it exceeded our expectations! The the atmosphere and service provided were outstanding and I would highly recommend staying there even if you are traveling alone! It's a great place to meet great people.
MR was very easy to access we caught the bus (Narita express) from Tokyo airport which took us straight to Hakuba, there's a bunch of good restaurants nearby.
Overall I was impressed with MR and will be going back in the near future if not sooner!

I stayed at Monkeyrider in Feb 2009 and had a ball. Travelled with my girlfriend and she was so happy we didnt have to share with all the other boys... didnt cost much more either. Well worth the extra money compared to sharing at a backpackers!

I stayed at Monkey Rider in February 2009. I had a fantastic stay and would recommend it to anyone.

The casual lodge like atmosphere made our stay very pleasant. The communal lounge/bar has plenty of space, the massive communal kitchen was well organized, social and a great way to save a bit of cash. Great access to shuttles and local attractions. The staff were helpful & knowledgeable and most importantly the place was clean and warm!
