When booking this place, I was skeptical due to the lack of western beds and showers in room. After communicating directly with the host, Toshi-san, my mind was set at peace from his polite and helpful attitude. Although we checked in extremely late, everything was organized and prepared for us already. The room, albeit small, was very charming and added to the overall experience (first time staying in japanese tatami room). The tatami mats were very comfortable and usually the bed is the first thing i complain about. Only issue i had was the rice pillows that were provided but it wasnt too big a deal. The breakfast was simply sublime. Almost gourmet standard yet with a strong home-cooked feel to the overall experience. Having stayed at numerous hotels and resorts all over the world, i can safely say that the breakfast here ranks as one of the, if not, top places i have stayed before. The inhouse onsen was an absolute delight. nothing compares to the feeling of coming off the mountain and walking downstairs into the onsen.

I am generally reluctant to post reviews (this being my first on trip advisor) but the combination of the friendly staff, amazing meals, comfortable rooms and the host, Toshi-san, has compelled me to write a review on this place. Toshi-san is an amazing host. Super helpful and knowledgable on anything and everything related to hakuba, just he himself is a reason to stay at this fabulous place. We definitely will be staying here again!

We just returned to Hawaii from six days at the Hakuba Onsen Ryokan Shirouma so. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, it is unusual that the hotel becomes a highlight of a trip. But this is true for us as we spent 5 nights here. Our room had a spectacular view of the lower ski slope just adjacent to the 1998 Winter Olympics ski jump platforms just two blocks away. This was definitely in the middle of some great ski areas. Happo-one itself is just steps away. The room was an immaculate tatami mat and futon Japanese classic experience complete with yukata and warm hoppi coat. There was the onsen itself which took the strain out of our skiing muscles and relaxed us for a good night sleep. The water was aklaline and seemed to be very beneficial for us.The food served was breakfast and dinner. Traditional Japanese food with local ingredients and beautifully presented. Our first night was highlighted by a dining room sake tasting with dinner featuring about a dozen wonderful types including several from Hakuba rice. The meals are prepared by the owner who comes out to visit all the diners and explain the food's presentation and preparation. We never had anything but praise for her efforts. Several of the servers spoke English at a comfortable level. At the front desk, the star of the show is the son, Toshi. He speaks fluent English and in fact he has just delivered the New Year's Eve city celebration opening speech in English. He knows exactly what needs and hopes his guests present and he is totally prepared to assist with all types of reservations with the train, bus, other restaurants, baggage forwarding, etc. He has seen it all. We found all of his suggestions to be very valuable. With the room, food and arrangements all handled by the hotel, we were able to relax and have a wonderful time. We highly recommend this for a wonderful winter experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the ski slope.

It is seldom that the place we stay becomes an important part of the holiday, but it was here. Toshi and all the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, his mother cooks truly excellent food, and you feel like you are experiencing the culture of Japan by staying here. Friendly, hospitable, helpful and comfortable. Can't speak highly enough of this place.

I have stayed at various ryokans through the years visiting Japan, and Shirauma-so will be the most memorable because of the great hospitality and warmth. The ryokan is impeccably clean and has a wonderful intimate homelike atmosphere, and yet it is a professional first rate establishment. Our room had a view of the Hakuba mountain range and it was amazing waking up to see the first snow of the season on. The onsen water is one of the best I have ever had. It truly improved our skin and complexion. Breakfast and dinner were included and it was very delicious and plentiful. The freshest local ingredients were used and presented with thoughtful care in a beautiful arrangement. Misuzu san, the owner of the ryokan would come out and greet each table during both meals to ask about our day and to explain about the dishes. This personal touch was wonderful. Her son, Toshi, was so friendly and nice and made us feel so very welcomed. His English is excellent which is great if you are an English speaking visitor. If you wish to experience a familylike atmosphere in a first rate ryokan, I highly recommend Shirauma-so if you are ever in Hakuba. Thank you so very much Misuzu san, Toshi san, and the entire Shirauma-so for giving me a feeling of Japan I will never forget. Your warm hearts will always be remembered.

Beautiful ryokan with an amazingly friendly host who speaks perfect English. As a resident of Japan I can attest to the quality of the food as well. Fabulous several course meal for very reasonable prices. The mother of the family owned business does the cooking and it is great. Toshi is a wonderful host and even rushed us to the bus stop so we could catch the bus back to Nagano. The onsen is gorgeous and spotless. Great storage room for ski equipment, etc. Only downside is slightly thin walls when folks are getting their skis in the morning if u are not an earlyish riser. As one other reviewer commented, beds are futon on tatami mats, which was fine for us but may not be for others. At the end of the day however this ryokan is the consummate Japanese experience and a lovely place to stay.

Shirouma-so was around 3-5 minute walk to the lifts at happo-one pending on how quick you want to get out there. Family run business and one of the oldest ryokans in hakuba, the locals also said they are one of the oldest familys there aswell.. Toshy is the host (also a family member) who you'll always find at reception and is a skiier/boarder himself and can give good tips on where and when will be the best and least crowded also can speak english well. Day park passes can be bought from reception. Also the family Grandma is the chef so you'll be in for some old school traditional japanese food which they usually bring out with some kind of westernised dish incase your not into the local stuff.

What an enjoyable experience staying here. Staff spoke English and were very helpful, rooms were spotless, service was excellent and the food was great. A shuttle bus to the ski runs stopped within walking distance from the Ryokan. Would definitely stay here again.
