Stayed here over April 2014.
Check-in early for dinner service (starts at 1900L I think). If not able to get dinner, a few restaurants are open nearby (including one Yaku-Nuki place).
Room had all the features you would expect: bedit toilet, japanese futon bed, tatami mats, green tea, and great views of the mountain.
The onsen hours are not too long, so either get it before bed, or in morning.
Breakfast was awesome, included traditional Japanese, with a few Western-style dishes as well.
It was April, so the runs were still open at top of mountain, but went to Ski Jump stadium instead.
Owner offered to drive to station, which was normal I assumed. I had a friend pick me up instead and drive me there. I would have enjoyed getting to know Toshi I think.
Such a simple and welcomed stay. Nice family-owned hotel. Would do it again a thousand times if I had the chance.

Room Tip: Great views of mountain are on the north or east side.

Fantastic stay in Hakuba, made all the more pleasant by Toshi. Was our first time here in Hakuba and he provided all of the support to make vacation painless.

Arrived early and walked to the Onsen from the bus stop. We shipped our luggage from tokyo, so the travel to Hakuba was great. Toshi helped with lift tickets, dinner reservations, even provided a driver for us to dinner one evening.

Morning breakfast was great and enjoyed 1 dinner at the onsen. The other nights, we sampled the local restaurants in the area.

Only issue for me was the size of the onsen. Its fairly small, fitting only 3 people comfortably.

Shiroumaso is a great Ryokan to stay at which is close to the Happo-one Ski lifts. The have great facilities including a drying room and a large bath that was great to relax in after a day on the slopes. The breakfasts were amazing and I recommend trying the traditional Japanese breakfast cause it kept me going all day. They also showed us where to hire ski equipment and gave us a great discount on the ski lift passes. The people were so friendly and they would even prepare your room for you and if required both pick you up and drop you of at Hakuba train station.

My husband & I have just returned after spending a week at Shirouma -so. We wanted to experience some Japanese culture as well as go crazy skiing! This hotel was in a great location close to the Happo bus terminal so getting to other mountains and towns was v easy. It is a family run hotel which was recommended by our travel agent however, many of the other guests were return multiple visits...this certainly says a lot about how great the facilities are and how yummy the food is. Breakfasts were amazing Japanese feasts and we had dinner in on a couple of occasions.....they were superb! The chef extraordinaire is an amazing 67 y o mother of this lovely family. Toshi, her son is front of house and his sister, Sasuki was always there with such a lovely smile and willing to help w anything. Thank you for a memorable stay. We will be back!

The hotel was spotlessly clean and is authentic Japanese which means sleeping on futons.
We enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfasts and the two evening meals we had in house. Relaxing in the Onsen after skiing was fantastic. The owner manager really understands what hospitality is all about and speaks fluent English, he went out of his way to arrange restaurants, transfers and change our accommodation arrangements when we were snowed in on our last day.
We enjoyed skiing at a number of resorts nearby in great conditions with no crowds.
We are looking forward to returning to Shirouma So and enjoying Toshi and his family’s hospitality again.

Room Tip: If you are going in February try to stay during the "Fire Festival" night

We had a horrible travel experience within Japan due to snowstorms and shut down train/shinkansen services, but when we finally arrived at Shirouma-so it was like entering an idyllic home away from home. Toshi-san is an incredible host, fluent in English and very accommodating to weary travelers. He was incredibly gracious and helped us with transport within Hakuba, even to have my son be seen by a local doctor. The staff are wonderful, and the onset is open late and a wonderful retreat within the retreat. I highly recommend this family-run hotel, we were treated so well and a wonderful 5 day stay.

Room Tip: Karin is a spacious room with bathroom attached.

Fantastic experience. Enhanced by the lovely family who operate it. The family have lived here for 200 years. Breakfast and dinner - brilliant. The in-house Onsen is also great. Extremely comfortable and overall a brilliant experience. Would definitely come back.
