Location next to the ski lifts is the biggest attraction of this property by far. The hotel has a service arrangement with a nearby ski shop whereby they both deliver equipment to the hotel and collect it as well, which is helpful. Rooms are clean. Matrasses are a bit too soft to let muscles relax after a day of skiing. The property a bit dated (20 years +), with new owners and management. A lot of service tun-ups are needed to make the place run more professionally. When it came to local tips and information the hotel service was not very helpful, as staff members are not local and were not familiar with the area. With the pricing towards the higher end, the place falls short on both the facilities and the service level, compared to what is available in Hakuba area. No sauna or onsen in-house. The hotel guests can use onsen facilities at a nearby lodging, 3 mins walk from Marillen.

Hotel M, Manager at Marillen Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 29 December 2013

Dear NY008,

Thank you for your review of the Hotel Marillen and for staying at our property. We are happy you enjoyed the service arrangement we organized with a local ski shop and you appreciate we are the only true ski in ski out Hotel in Hakuba and the convenience this offers. We value your custom and want to make sure our Hotel and service exceeds all client expectations. Unfortunately in this case it seems we did not meet your expectation and for this we apologize. I will address some of your points individually.

Mattresses - Following last season feedback from clients was that the beds are too firm as many western clients prefer softer mattress than is the standard in Japan. For this reason we upgraded most rooms with new medium firm hotel grade mattresses. This is a personal taste and For a future stay please let us know your preference so we can allocate you in a room with the firmer Japanese Mattresses.

Facilities - Our hotel offers guests free use of a local Onsen which includes Spa pool, and steam room. We are not advertised as having these facilities on offer and we have arranged this to offer guests a higher level of service than was previously on offer here.

Staff Knowledge - Being a seasonal hotel our hotel has some new staff each season along with return staff, we do our best to train the staff on the local area and local services, being one of the first clients of the season we apologize if this was not up to your standard and are implementing more training for the new staff. We also have a number of local Hakuba staff that are from the area unfortunately it seems these were not the ones you interacted with on your stay.

We appreciate your feedback and will take it on board so we can offer guests the best possible experience.

In over a decade of skiing in Japan, I have been able to sample a broad range of accommodation…big hotels, small inns, etc. This quaint Austrian style building is the definite winner-I see no reason to go anywhere else going forward. First off, it has location, location, location. To my knowledge, it is the only truly ski in/ski out hotel in Hakuba. With kids, you couldn’t get a better set up. Simply a matter of walking out the front door, getting the kids’ skis on, then skiing down to the lift. During the day (lucky enough to be there on a blue sky one), they had tables set up on the deck where we were able to enjoy draft German beers and outstanding Tyrolean food. A Japanese friend actually commented “This isn’t a real ski resort restaurant-the food is too good”. As it cooled down later in the afternoon, we moved inside for another outstanding meal (kids finished with a terrific chocolate fondue) and they had a live singer performing. My wife and I sat in front of the fire watching through the front window as our sons sledded and skied (night skiing every night until 9 right in front) while having a glass of delicious hot spiced wine.
The rooms are ample and comfortable (the bathrooms are a bit small, but passable). We had a room facing the slope, which made for an awesome view, but on the second evening they were making snow, which was a bit loud. Next time I might opt to forgo the view and get a room on the backside of the hotel. The Japanese Manager couldn’t have been more accommodating-she helped organize ski lessons, booked taxis and basically made us feel like we were visiting relatives. We’re already booked back in for our next trip.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back of the hotel don't have the spectacular ski slope view, but can be quieter in the evening if they are snow making

I stayed at this ski lodge in January 2013 with a group of friends, and thought it was fantastic!! It's located right on the bottom of a ski run, just meters from a ski lift, I believe it's one of the only ski-in ski-out lodges on the Happo One mountain and nearby resorts.

The rooms are spacious and cozy, and the staff were really friendly and helpful- a few of our group got the sniffles, and they were only too happy to give us a lift to the local pharmacy for supplies. They also invited us to evening activities such as indoor soccer, badminton etc. The Marillen restaurant also supplied breakfast to us every morning- it was nice to get a hearty breakfast before a big day of skiing!! It was also a great place for evening drinks and snacks- I will never forget the day I got back from a big day on the slopes to find the owner waiting out the front with a complimentary serve of hot mulled wine- perfect!!!

It's also a short walk for a Thai massage, lovely Onsens (hot springs), bars, convenience stores and restaurants- very conveniently located in the Happo village.

We all plan on going back and staying at hotel Marillen again soon!!!

Room Tip: Nice views from all rooms, but if you want a view of the ski run at the front, make sure to ask for it when booking!

I though this specific hotel was magnificent and very well maintained. The service level was incredible and the concierge team could get you anything you want and when you want. I was so happy with my stay that i have recommended it to every one i know and i will be definitely going back. Words cant describe how happy i am with this hotel, you must go and see it for your self and one thing i can guarantee that it will one of the best times of your life if not THE BEST TIME OF YOUR LIFE. How could i forget the FOOOOOD OMG its just amazing the food that i was eating made me feel like i was in a 7 star restaurant and the chef was Gordon Ramsay, i recommend the cheese foundue to eat with friends. You must go and check this place out, if there is heave on ski slope then i found it.

Room Tip: The mountain view is beautiful, the food, the rooms, the hotel, the people, the culture, the guest OMG its just the best place on earth

i stayed at the Marillen with my fiancee and 4 of his friends in January this year, the hotel is fantastically positioned right on the slopes of happone. The room were clean, slightly dated with a weirs Austrian theme (kooky Japan!!) all western beds though and we were pretty happy with the price we paid. The restaurant down stairs was Austrain themed too and we all thought it was great and drank there heaps until one night one guy who we thought was the local drunk ( really pretty obese guy) drank all the jager it was pretty funny as he wound up asleep on a chair behind the bar snoring his head off....But all in all it was a fab holiday and all the boys had a ball heaps of powder, heaps of different resorts to choose from, our fav was Cortina......would come back to Hakuba for sure!!!!!
