“Amazing onsen property, great location, good nightlife!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

I've stayed at the Mominoki a couple of times over the last few years. First off: this is a more 'Japanese-style' ski resort, so if you are not used to that, some of the features may surprise. The positives: an amazing tatami room and futons are very comfortable after a hard day skiing, and the onsen is cozy and very welcoming. Also, the location (right next to Hakuba Happone ski resort) is pretty tough to beat. A hidden plus is the Barn, probably the best pub location in Hakuba (also has concerts and raves sometimes), so if you're looking for a bit of nightlife, there's that too. The one downside is the restaurant/food options aren't great.

We stayed at the Hakuba Mominoki Hotel from Feb 15-23 this year. It was awesome.

International Reservations Manager Solomon and his team were helpful, polite and very accommodating making our stay incredibly comfortable and enjoyable! They went above and beyond their duties to help us with anything we asked for.

Location:
The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the nearby Happo-One Nakiyama chairlifts, and a short shuttle ride to the Sakka chairlifts. Being right next door to Rhythm sports shop was great! Got my bindings fastened and board waxed in no time. There was a Lawson's convenience store nearby to get water and snacks.

Breakfast buffet:
Basic, but pleasant. Could have had more selection, but nothing to complain about.

Transportation:
The daytime shuttle schedule was convenient, but even if you miss a shuttle, a taxi ride was less than 300yen to Sakka. Loved the party bus! At night the hotel shuttle fitted with a disco ball takes you around to the bars and clubs in the area.

Accommodations:
We stayed in a family style room and compared to other hotels, this one was huge! Spacious enough for 2, luggage and snowboarding gear!

Onsen:
Loved loved loved the onsen! The outdoor one was sublime. Other than peak hours when it was more full / noisy, off-peak hours in the morning and late at night were quiet and peaceful.

Language:
Most of the staff spoke English, but night staff were a bit weaker than day staff. Not a big complaint
though.

Nightlife: Not really much of a nightlife as compared to Niseko, but we were there for boarding mainly and dinner options were abundant.

Logistics:
Other than a slight hiccup during our initial pickup, everything else was smooth and well handled.

Overall, I would definitely stay at this hotel again and highly recommend to others. We also stayed at the Sierra resort and some friends stayed at Gakuto Villa (a serviced apartment) - though Mominoki was hands down the clear winner for me.

Thanks Solomon! We had a great time! Until next time!!

We recently spent a week at the Mominoki hotel and would return in a heart beat. The staff were great and looked after as well. Loved the buffet breakfast. The snow was fantastic and look forward to returning in the near future.

The only disappointment was our dealings hiring skis from The Boarding Co, on a few fronts.

Firstly we booked for a pick up at 8.00 and was forgotten about. Short of calling them and reminding them at 8.20 to chase up were told it was not in there system and we would have to wait another hour (despite the confirmation email). Then told the quoted price one day after having the skis was wrong and would be an additional $60. When questioned about the discrepancy were told it was a lack of integrity our end.

Don't make the mistake of hiring gear from The Boarding Co. Use someone else and your holiday will be much more enjoyable.

The service and value rating are more skewed to the poor performance of the ski hire.

Still in the middle of a family ski holiday for seven nights and have discovered there is no day spa as advertised on the website. My family ski - I dont, I walk, read and go to the spa. Today I couldnt even get a cup of tea in the lounge area around 11.30am.

This is a great family orientated hotel , right in the middle of everything . Close to the ski lifts , transport will take you to all the resorts close by on a shuttle service running most of the morning. In the evening a party bus will take you to any restaurant you have booked .....and will sometimes come and pick you up !! In house restaurant - fantastic breakfasts with every choice you could wish for , loved the mini croissants with black currant jam . The buffet dinner was also excellent for value and choices . We had the two different menus A and B on two consecutive evenings as ski injury confined us getting out and about and it was no hardship and a pleasant surprise to be so well catered for.
Lots of restaurants within walking distance and many on the night bus route back if you don't want the expense of taxis. There were five of us and many taxis only take 4 .
Staff are all very pleasant and always willing to help in any way they can which was greatly appreciated .
The rooms are spacious and well maintained with clean towels etc daily if required.
Great little bar in the lounge area which served great cocktails while you sat in front of a roaring fire , looking out over snow covered trees - very picturesque .
Loved the inside/ outside onsen .
Many families we met come here year after year and I can see why , it has a really cosy traditional alpine feel with lots of charm . Would highly recommend this hotel .

Room Tip: The newer wing has spacious rooms

Our family of 4 just came back from having a good 9 night stay at the Mominoki Hotel in Hakuba.
The reception staff are always very helpful and the hotel is only a 5 minute walk to the ski lift. Rythym ski rentals have friendly with helpful staff and are positioned right next door plus being price competitive with Spicy and Central Snowsports ski rental companies. (I have had other experiences with rental companies where they treat you more as a number than a person and simply want you out the door as soon as possible).
What you should also know about the Mominoki is the following- 1.That the family rooms are of a good single room size but have 4 single beds rather that a Queen and 2 singles, 2.If your room is located on L3 in the wing above the restaurant, then you will not have reliable WiFi in your room which is frustrating for all family members.3.The buffet breakfast is good but the counter food warmers deliver only luke warm bacon, sausages and hash browns and scrambled eggs.4. Make sure that you are mentally comfortable prior to getting nude with kids and others in the in the Onsen spa as bathing naked with young kids in a spa was uncomfortbale for me personally.5. The 'drying room' is small and unstaisfactory in heating so you really need to take your boots and clothing to the room in order to have them dry and warm for the next day. 6.The room air conditioning does not have air temperature control adjustment and the room gets too warm in the night to sleep so the only thing you can do in turn the fan control off and rely on the doona whilst sleeping. it is too cold to open outside to leave the verandah door slightly ajar.

This restaurant has a nice setting a fair bit back from the ski lifts. We enjoyed the food. A good selection of Japanese dishes to cater for different traveller's tastes. We were a bit annoyed but the 'cover charge' they added to our bill (300 yen per person, children included). When we asked about this, they said it covered the pickles dish to start our meal (I have never paid for this before in Japan). We think it was actually their way of adding a tip to the bill
