“Great accommodation matching a great town”
Reviewed 25 February 2014 via mobile

Well appointed ryokan in a good location on the Dosojin Festival site part of town. Hearty Japanese style breakfast with consideration for dietary requirements. Onsen was large and clean, rarely busy. Close to several free public onsen. Unique building which shows its expansion over time. Staff were helpful and friendly, gave valuable advice and detailed introduction to town upon check in, carried luggage up two flights of stairs - much appreciated. Earned all 5 stars through quality, value and diligence.

To come back to a lodge and have a hot natural spring bath after skiing was enough for me, brilliant! That said, the traditional Japanese room settings were spacious and comfortable, the Japanese breakfasts were absolutely yummy (and so healthy), the lodge (ryokan) was spotlessly clean and the staff would bend over backwards to do anything for you. Kawaichiya is right in the village a short walk from many restaurants and shops (beautiful little village too) and an easy walk to the bottom of the walk-a-lator that takes you to the lifts. We left our boots and skis at St Anton's Cafe locker room to make the stroll more pleasant! Kawaichiya has a good sized ski room with lockable ski racks and boot cupboards as well. If you're looking for a Japanese experience in the snow, Kawaichiya and it's delightful staff are the way to go.

Room Tip: Our room (311) faced South over the quiet street and out across the snow covered roofs. You could s...

Can not fault this place. We had two western style rooms with their own bathrooms. The decor was a bit dated, but spotless and with everything you need. The onsen was nothing short of perfect. I used it every afternoon after being on the slopes, and each time I was the only one in there. The staff were so hospitable, nothing was too much trouble, and they helped us with everything from lift passes to ski hire. We were there the night of the Desojin Fire Festival, and they even provided blankets to wrap around us so that we did not get embers on our clothes. There is a drying room downstairs with lockers where you can leave your ski gear. Breakfast is a huge production. If you plan on hitting the slopes early just let them know that you will be missing breakfast as they really do go to a lot of trouble, and will be calling your room if you are not there. The ryokan is within walking distance of all the little eateries and the travelator to the slopes (all uphill though). Just loved our time there, and wish it had been longer.

It was a wonderful experience in Nozawaonsen town. The town map seems confusing at first but after you get the sense of the scale, it wasn't difficult to locate the public onsens, foot spas, or ramen shop underground.

Kawaichiya was about 8 minutes walk up slope from the chair-lift and walkway but we picked this in exchange for private toilet, non-smoking room and its onsen. We spent 4 nights at in a Japanese-style Family room . The room very spacious but not much room to hang our clothes (we were with two kids) and wet ski outfits, gratefully my wife packed a bunch of cloth hangers along (which I would have thrown them out, were I found them before we left home). The room was rather cold at night even with heater esp. toilet area (yeah, toilet seat was a heated one here) but the blankets were very warm and clean.

There were vending machines, small sweet shop, internet and wi-fi at the lobby area and you can store ski gears underground for free. The ryokan also provides boots and umbrellas, which was great when we have to walk to the public onsen at night esp. when snowing. The staffs are polite and helpful. The BF was Japanese, delicious and plentiful (fish, rice, soup, suki, egg, veggy, dessert, tea and coffee) but only served after 8:00.

Onsen was great and hot. The outdoor one was too cold for me (it was snowing quite heavily and with rather strong breeze)

The only complaint was smoking area between the lobby and the onsen, which was indoor and made the whole place stink. Our room was just above the onsen and luckily we didn't smell it there.

The hotel has a very special discount for ski gears with the town rental shop located east of the traffic light (the only one in town). Boots and Skis for 1,000 yen (on the mountain will probably cost 3 times as much). We stored our gears at the end of the day in one of the shops next to the ski school on the slopes (cost about 100 ea. for ski and locker). We also paid 500 for eqpt. insurance, which was a good decision as our daughter's skis and poles were missing from the rack in front on the ski center.

We spent 4 nights at Kawaichiya in December 2013, 2 nights in a western room and 2 nights in a japanese room... by far the japanese room is better... see pictures attached...

NozawaOnsen is a tiny town but the map they provide does not really help to find your way around.... upon arrival to the bus station, just walk straight (slope directions) and Kawaichiya will be on one of the streets on your left hand side...

Service was great, the guy at reception was super kind and spoke good english... there is really strong wifi and the onsen for guests is just awesome! gotta try it.

As mentioned before, the western room is not ideal, they have 2 twin beds with super soft worn out mattresses and the bathroom is tiny... the japanese rooms only have a tatami area (you sleep very comfortably) and accomodate up to 4 adults in one room... bathroom is also much better but there is no shower (who needs one when there is an onsen)...

Hotel provides breakfast with the rate, which is delicious but do not expect anything western, it is very heavy on fish, vegetables and rice...

overall a great experience and would definitely recommend to other travellers...

If in the hotel for the ski, the hotel has discounts in a ski equipment rental shop and slopes are 5 to 10 minute walk (easy walk) and you can store your equipment up in the slopes directly, which is very convenient...

Room Tip: Choose a japanese room and go for the full experience...

We stayed in Kawaichiya in Jan 2009, and again in January 2013. We were not disappointed. Kesanari Kono is a great host, and the Ryoken is great value. We are a family with teen-age kids. Last time we had a family room with en-suite, this time two rooms with private toilet. The onsen is so good that a private bathroom is not necessary. The accommodation is clean and comfortable, the food is excellent and the staff are helpful. The Onsen is great. I have recommended this place to many friends.

My husband and I stayed here in February on our maiden trip to Japan and also our maiden skiing holiday. Kawaichiya was perfect - in a town where little English is spoken, the owner was extremely helpful in giving us directions and lots of helpful advice. Staff very hospitable.

The room was very basic - just two (slightly lumpy) beds but we didn't mind. The highlight of the place for us was the onsen - they were just super and unlike the ones in the village which can get VERY crowded, the one in the inn was pretty quiet (and has both indoor and outdoor options).

would highly recommend Nozawa and Kawaichiya.
