“Excellent Pension”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

Pension Tannenhof is fantastically located right next to the Higage lift in the Nosawa onsen Ski resort. The service is very good, the main cliental are repeat customers and I would have to disagree with everything BobT2312 states. The pension is run by a Japanese family who have owned Tannenhof for over 25 years, and have kept a good level of service throughout this time, they put a great deal of effort into making sure that they offer a good experience, and this is certainly what we felt. Pension Tannenhof also has foreign staff so if you don't speak Japanese someone should be able to help with your needs. The main town is about 5 minutes away by the 'U' road, or at worst a 15 minute walk up the hill, so if you are there to ski, or walk in the mountains it's perfect, and not too far from town should you wish to visit. Overall very good, and represents good value with two excellent meals.

We stayed here over the weekend in 2012 February.
I would say that it has everything you need. Its very simple but nice and comfortable. Its just next to ski lifts so its easy to get up to mountains early in the morning.
As the pension is a little bit away from the Nozawa Onsen village center then you need to walk about 15 minutes to get there. We didn't mind walking. Returning to Pension might take a bit longer as it is uphill.
The owners were very nice and friendly. The woman is a relative with the owners of Daimon Soba restaurant in Nozawa village - a place I highly recommend to go and have a dinner. They helped us with reservation. Daimon Soba is very popular so its better to reserve seats as it gets full in the evenings.

I visit many places every winter in Japan, and this is the first one I would not want to come back to.

Location:
The place is located outside of main town area and is close to lifts; and that is the only potential good point. Although the town is very well connected to lift area by moving pathway, so the close location is not a benefit.
The main town (Nozawa Onsen) is actually a very nice cozy little place and if I go next time I want to stay in the town. There are lots of free public hot springs there.
Staying in Tannenhof outside of the town limits greatly your convenience to enjoy that. The moving pathway closes ~5, so you have to finish your skiing early to make it to the town and come back to hotel before they stop the pathway. Otherwise you have to walk up in snow ~30 minutes (NO THANKS!)

Service.
Probaly the worst point about this place. Since I walked in I had a feeling that guests are a "pain in the ..." to management. No "Welcome", "Good morning" or "Enjoy your day".
Discount for lift tickets was a joke. 200Yen (out of ~5000Yen), and it's NOT that you got a voucher to get the discount when you bought the ticket, the manager needed to drive there and buy the ticket for you, and you need to wait 30-40 minutes to start your day.
The staff was having dinner/breakfast at the same time as guests, so if you needed something you needed to bother them. Unbelievable in Japan, in place with Japanese management. I would not believe if someone told me it is possible in Japan, but saw it myself. I was with Japanese friends and they were a bit shocked.
When I told manager I want to cancel the rest of my stay as I am not satisfied, he almost shouted that I need to cover 100% of all costs anyway. He (and his wife) were not interested what exactly I am not happy with.

Food.
Western (with Japanese additions), generally with no concept about the meal (e.g. pumpkin soup with miso soup server after that).
Quality a notch higher grade than supermarket level or what I could cook something myself.
Quantity - I was still a bit hungry after dinner.
Final surprise was a COLD coffee served after dinner! (no, it was not supposed to be ICE coffee). See also comments on Service.
Day and night contrast to typical Japanese guest houses.

I think the place aims at one time foreign visitors, who will never have a chance to come back, so the pension management does not need try to please anyone. You also cannot cancel once you book, so they are safe. Indeed, more than 70% guests were foreigners when I was there. It is a harsh comment, but that is what I felt.

YOU CAN find MUCH MUCH better places in Japan for that price. If you go to Nozawa Onsen, consider staying in the town area!

We are very disappointed in receiving this response from one of our guests.
We have been running this business for many years and this is the first time we have received such a harsh comment. We do not want to get in to an argument on how much of what is written actually is true, but we would
like to post some e-mails we have received from guests as a reference.
We pride our selves on the comfort and service we provide and do our best to have guests get the most out of their stay.
