“Great location and very friendly staff”
Reviewed 24 December 2013

We had a great time here at this charming authentic Ryonkan. The rooms are very traditional, although if you've not stayed in a traditional Japanese room before, are a bit of a shock first time viewing. The futon beds are laid down in the evening after arrival. I would recommend booking two rooms if you have older children, as we were tripping over each other and rolling into each other during the night. Kind of a cozy dormitory which soon becomes pretty chaotic with ski gear, clothes and teenager rubbish not to mention the bags of ski snacks we accumulated. Also our lovely cleaning lady seemed to drop off clean kimonos every day and I think I cleared out about 20 on the last day. The staff here are very helpful and obliging, always with a smile and thankfully they all spoke a little English. The location is great, an energetic walk up the hill to the Nagasaka gondola. (leave your ski gear up there at the hire shop, first on left ) We didn't use the hotel's recommended ski hire St Anton, or ski out of the Hikage slope which is closer on the map but accessed by a steep long moving walkway. Tried the moving walkway one day and all pretty slow and muscle wearing before you even get to the slopes. However that side of the village, behind Jonnobi is very pretty and a must do walk around that half of the village to see little tea houses, outdoors onsens and temples.

The hotel restaurant was busy doing functions most evenings so we ate locally, although used the hotel bar for some good drinks and bar snacks. Worth getting hold of the Nozawa Onsen Village Guide, (English). The hotel did not have this when we arrived but this is very useful because working out which restaurants to eat at takes a couple of days. We highly recommend the Tapas Japanese restaurant Sakai, the Italian virtually next door to Jonnobi is great fun and extensive wine list and yummy nosh. For great udon/noodles/soup and dumplings try Touyou Ramon almost opposite the hotel downstairs.

We really loved this quaint Japanese ski village, and recommend the Jon Nobi as a lovely place for the family to stay and the onsens are great here too. (But don't jump in too quick!)

The rooms are basic (I was in a Japanese room), but really, for a ski village that is all you need! The whole experience of tatami mats and traditional tables and chairs, it was exactly what I wanted. The rooms were warm and when I looked out my window, I got what I wanted, a perfect powdery white view of the snow. The staff are just lovely and the location of the hotel is central to all the restaurants in the village and a short walk up to the ski lifts, plus the Onsen is very clean and lovely.

Room Tip: Maybe if you can't speak Japanese and want to chill out and watch TV ask for a room that caters...

This was our second stay at Jonnobi and once again we really loved it. My only criticism would be that the tatami mats in our room may have seen better days - flacked all over our clothes etc. Everything else was great - rooms spacious and comfortable, breakfast really good, bar area fun, onsens fabulous, brilliant location and all the staff extremely nice and helpful.

My wife and I stayed for a week at the Jon Nobi, along with another pair of friends, and we loved it. Our room was very comfortable and spacious, the in-house onsens were great, and the service provided by the staff was excellent. The location was very convenient for skiing, being a short walk below the Yu Road, which connects with the Hikage Gondola.

We chose Nozawa for an authentic cultural experience of Japan while taking in a ski trip. That is exactly what we got!

The Ryokan Jon Nobi was our second hotel after arriving in Nozawa – the first being completely disastrous and highly unsuitable for our needs & standards (see other review). On this trip, we were a couple travelling with one teenager and needed to share a room for three comfortably. We did not wish to pay top dollar, but did not want to over-compromise on comfort and experience either. We were aiming for the middle road.

Ryokan Jon Nobi was more expensive than our first choice, but a much better experience. We chose a traditional Japanese-style room for our stay with futon beds and limited furnishings as it the norm in Japan. In hindsight, a western room would have been much easier for ski dressing skiing, but the traditional experience was what we wanted and what was delivered with politeness and professionalism. The futons were hard but the hotel staff accommodating in providing additional layers for our comfort. Though the rooms were clearly quite old (think 80s), they were reasonably well updated and well maintained and we felt our needs were met adequately for this new experience.

The general hotel guest areas were nicely presented and recently refurbished with a lovely bar overlooking a snow-bank where pre-dinner or post-skiing sake was a must. Evening meals were included in our accommodation package and were a high quality, culinary feast every night. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

The hotel also had its own onsen hot baths which were fabulous every night after skiing. Kimonos, slippers and towels were provided in the rooms and it was quite a lovely experience to go through the motions of scrubbing off and soaking with a mix of women from around the world. There were also several ‘two people’, private onsens for couples/families if desired.

The Ryokan itself was located at the bottom of a short (though steep) walk up to the ski access area and at the high end of the traditional village area of Nozawa. A public onsen was opposite and an open foot spa right outside the door. Be warned – very little English was spoken in the general village area – so be prepared to take some risks and do a lot of gesturing! The location overall was superb for a Japan ski experience, and although the language sometimes posed a barrier to responsiveness of service … patience and a genuine politeness and service focus overcame all.

We confidently recommend this one.

Room Tip: If you like creature comfort - book a western-style room - the futons are very hard!

We visited Nozawa for the first time in February 2012 and absolutely loved both the village and this hotel. We stayed at Jonnobi for a week and can not fault the place - clean and very comforatable. Loved the onsens, which were always spotless when ever we used them, which was daily. The staff, whilst communication was a little challenging at times, were always extremely helpful. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but have no complaints about the breakfast we enjoyed every morning. Loved the rooms - very spacious, clean, well attended and the beds were great. Location wise the Jonnobi was also fabulous despite the horrible uphill climb every morning to the moving walkway (more about my lack of fitness than anything else). We were easily able to enjoy the Village's restaurants and bars which were all within easy walking distance.

The skiing here was amazing and the village and it's people very welcoming - we absolutely loved it!! So much so that we have already booked to return in 2013 and have also already made our return reservation for another week's stay at Jonnobi.

I was very disappointed by this place. It is nothing like it appears on the website. It feels old and cheaply redone to make it look trendy. The breakfast was miserable, looked more like leftovers from the previous day. The private onsen rooms looked filthy with towels from the previous users laying on the floor. Making the bed for them was throwing hastily the comforter and pillows on the bed. No I am not being picky. When I pay what they charge I expect a lot more. For the same money you can receive in other hotels professional service, much better food and a lot more inviting environment. I cannot believe places like this still exist in "service-oriented" Japan.
