I selected this hotel to hear the real story of Tsunami. This hotel has the tsunami devastated area bus tour with storyteller. It was about 1 hour drive, but I could hear what happened after the 3/11. I can't experience it at usual life.

The room has enough area and one bedroom. Hotel has 2 onsen, 1 has open-air bath and sauna room. Scenery from the room and onsen were excellent. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Hotel has the little library collecting manga, my sons enjoyed reading them.

Seagull could be seen from the room. Maybe they don't afraid human but little bit noisy.

One of the more beautiful places I have ever stayed--remarkable views, beautiful rooms with a combination tatami and western style bedroom. Magnificent outdoor onsen, and fantastic buffet style dinners with some of the best sashimi I have had in Japan. Moreover, a great place to spend your money, since the hotel owner and staff worked tirelessly to restore the community in the two years since the Tsunami. They opened the hotel as a shelter for many months and still maintain a library and classes for local children. I was humbled by their courage, and by their almost magical ability to create a joyful place of peace in the midst of such devastation.

Emily P-san,
Thank you for your nice comments.
I am working in this hotel, but I believe our sashimi is one of the best in Japan as freshness.
Our place is being recovered after tsunami, therefore I hope many of people come to see how we are getting better than past years.
I hope to see you again. Thanks again.

While the lobby is welcoming and the staff attentive and friendly, the rooms leave something to be desired. We were shown to a room at the back of the hotel with a view of the road and which reeked of cigarette smoke, even though I had asked for a non-smoking room. The staff member dealt with this really well and immediately agreed to find another room. He showed us to the cafe and ordered tea / coffe on the house while we waited. Good customer recovery. As the hotel was pretty full we had to stay one night in a one room and the two others in a different room. The first room was lovely, ocean view, clean etc. The next day they moved our luggage for us but when we arrived at the room it was small, cramped, view of the road - next to the room we had first been shown - no fly screens and only a heating option. So you either left the window open despite the mozzies and traffic wizzing by or sweated the night out. The bathroom was also dirty - really dirty so that I had to request to have it cleaned. Not impressed.
The onsen is a highlight but doesn't really compensate for the run down decor and poor level of cleaning elsewhere.
The restaurants are good, although there are also options popping up around the tsunami devastated area that are worth trying and which would he the economy kick off again.

During our stay in the tsunami-devastated Miyagi prefecture, we stayed at the Hotel Kanyo for one night. The hotel is located just outside the tsunami hit area of Minamisanriku, but the hotel is intact and fully operational. We stayed as part of a business trip, for one night. The hotel itself was lovely, very clean and everything is shiny. The decor is a bit dated but the upkeep is phenomenal and the hotel looks like it was beamed straight out of 1988. Rooms were traditional Japanese style, sleeping on thin mattresses on the floor. If you're in Japan, you've got to try this at least once!
The hotel staff were fantastic and extremely friendly and gracious, despite the horrors that the region has been through. We felt good spending our money in this hotel as we could see the hotel supports the town. The onsen (hot baths) is apparently quite famous and is definitely worth a go - the outside one is a great experience. The traditional Japanese food we had was lovely - fresh and tasty. You could tell in it's heyday this hotel would have been the bees-knees - complete with swimming pool and views over the bay.
Overall, if you're in the area it's worth a stay here. Especially at the moment, the region could do with the boost.
