Compared to most zoos I've been to in Japan, this one is the cleanest, with the animals very well kept. The area itself is beautifully set in the mountains, surrounded by forest. Izu in general is one of the most beautiful places I've been to in Japan, and is a great weekend destination. Because of the size of the zoo, it's not a very long or tiring hike to see all the animals either (which I consider a plus!). Animal variety is good, though the main attraction at this 'walking safari' are the white lion cubs and the white tigers (the latter you can actually watch from within a restaurant situated adjacent to the tiger paddock!). If it weren't for the 2,000 yen per person admission fee, I would have given this place 5/5!
