This is the site where Emperor Godaigo (exiled to the Oki Islands) is believed to have resided for one year in 1332. On the top of Mt. Tenno is the area where the Emperor lived, and nearby are many other sites connected with his exiled group. There is a small museum within the grounds where you can look at artifacts connected with Godaigo that prove he was exiled here.

“An emperor lived here?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2013

This was where an ex-Emperor of Japan was said to be exiled in 1332. There is a small musuem of documents relating to this time, but it is hard to understand if you do not have any knowledge of Japanese. Maybe you could go with someone who speaks English and can read difficult Japanese? But the climb up the 134 stairs to the top of the hill is well worth it! There is a great view of the sea and neighbouring islands, as well as a nice shrine, and the place where Emperor Godigo supposedly lived.
