I must admit that on seeing the pictures of the exterior of the hotel I was a little apprehensive but I was more than pleasantly surprised. The hotel was excellent in every way, the staff went out of their way to help in anyway they could, even though most had little command of English, though enough to be understood, ask for Yoshi (a very pleasant woman) who has a pretty good command of the language and an ever present smile. The breakfast menu was large and varied with all kinds of Japanese food, Sushi, Udon noodles, etc, but they also had Atlantic grabs legs and food to suit western tastes, Eggs, Bacon, Croissants, Toast and Jam etc. I would also recommend booking half board; the dinner was excellent, a seven course Japanese meal with your choice of Sake, Beer, Coffee or Tea. Just opposite the hotel, across the road, there is a seating area in a beautiful garden where we sat after dinner; quite alone, and drank Sake. Check out the Kanamaruza (Kabuki theater) just up the hill and the Sake museum just down the road, but if you want to go to the Konpira-san shrine it's a very long 1,368 steps to the top and there's a lot to see so make a day of it. I can thoroughly recommend a 2 or 3 nights stay in Kotohira, It's a little off the beaten track for westerners and you will see very few, though it is popular with the locals. Oh just one thing to note; they have a hot spring in the hotel and it is not mixed bathing but if you're shy be aware that it is compulsory to be naked. If you want to see Kabuki it is only on for three weeks in April but you can book through the hotel; book early it's very popular and though you have to sit on a cushion in a small space it is well worth it.

Room Tip: The rooms are extremely clean and new and as we have always found on our trips to Japan, everyone is...

Agree with all reviews. I felt as if I were staying in a friend's home.
The room was clean and cozy, and I had good sleep with heavenly soft bed. Hot spring gave us a rest and forget about the tiredness from travel for a while.
I stayed here one night with my mother for visiting Konpira Shrine. We woke up early and walk up Konpira mountain for 30 munite. Arrived Konpira Shrine at the top of mountain for 30 munites walk. We had traditional Japanese breakfast after the walk.
Look forward to return. Thanks to all of the staff.

In this hotel the service was excellent! people went out of there way to help even driving us to the train station and trying to help book trains. the English is limited but enough to get by. The positive attitude helps make up for any lack of English skills.

Rooms are beautiful wee appointed, clean and quite large. Food was excellent and caters for all from formal to kids fun buffet. The bath house is very very good I liked the different waters and used it many a time.

We walked up the mountain to the temple, it was fun but it was far and lots of stars as in 700 + stairs. the whole area was friendly we even had a little restaurant close to the hotel who opened up just so we could have a light lunch, had we known it was closed we would never have walked in. just shows the service culture which extends to the hotel.

Check out was fast and yes we got driven to the train station again!

Room Tip: Higher up the better

I had stayed at the Sakura-no-sho 4 years ago and had an excellent memory of it, which was not changed by my recent stay there. This is a "modern ryokan" in the sense that the decoration of the rooms is very modern, and so is the attached bathroom. However all you would expect of a first class ryokan is there: perfect service, wonderful food, and a beautiful onsen bath.

This last is one of the best I have seen. It is quite spacious, with many booths available for showering, and 3 pools. One large one indoors, and two outdoors. One of there is a lovely wooden tub with roses floating in it, and it smells delicious! In the changing area there are many dressing tables with mirrors, hairdryers, etc.

It is a short walk from the ryokan to the beginning of the ascent to the Kompira shrine. It is also next door to the Kabuki theater. Some members of the staff do speak English, which helped, as my Japanese is not entirely adequate. I will add that I appreciated the availability of free wi-fi in the lobby.

The hotel was amazing, the rooms were spotless and decorated to a very high standard. The beds were very comfortable, not what I was expecting from a Japanese style hotel, and the bathroom was great, really good shower and loads of toiletries provided.
There were loads of staff on hand to help (sometimes too many!), although they didn't speak English too well but would always go & find someone who could.
The food was excellent, very ellaborate and well presented.
