Hoshino Resorts is always my top choice to stay in Japan. I am familiar with Hoshinoya Resorts, which is their top brand and this is the first time I stayed at the Kai Resorts brand. I honestly think the hotel group is too humble to call Kai Resorts "hot springs inn" as a translation from Japanese "Ryokan". Kai Aso is a luxury hideaway retreat property. Also, it is too humble to call its rooms "Suite" which I creatively called it an "Onsen Villa" (like Pool Villa people can relate as it has a private hot spring in the villa". In fact, the tatami suite we stayed is a contemporary Japanese well-blended villa that we enjoyed very much. Somehow I enjoyed Kai Resorts very much as a more savvy traveler to just not being pampered but also to get a real sense of Japanese hospitality. Private onsen is a real treat. Dinner and breakfast (half board) is awesome, some surprises in using seasonal food produce; beautiful presentation and they already adjusted to my dietary requirement based on my previous stay at Hoshinoya Resorts. General Manager came and greeted upon check-in and throughout our stay. Service is exceptional and our lady host can speak fluent English and prepare tour information for us without us even asking. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stayed at more Hoshino Resorts in the future. Highly recommended. TIPS: for those driving and using car navigation system, do not use the phone number in the website (as the phone number is a general number to be used for all properties I was told). Check with hotel to get a phone number on a local place around the corner and we can find the hotel driving north for about 2 minutes. And actually Google Map is correct in its location as well.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- KAI Aso: Escape to the Land of the Fire KAI is a collection of ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, all with fewer than 50 rooms, that boast soothing hot springs and Japanese-style interiors. Enter an authentic world of ryokan and experience the spirit of this country’s omotenashi or traditional hospitality. KAI Aso is located on the southern island of Kyushu, surrounded by lush mountains of a national park. The mineral-rich hot springs of Mt. Aso, a caldera volcano, fill the outdoor tubs that grace every secluded villa. After you soak, take in panoramic views of the magnificent five peaks while savoring the local Kyushu cuisine. ... more less
