“Excellent hotel with wonderful staff”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

I stayed at Yakushima Green hotel earlier this month. This was my favorite non-traditional style hotel that I stayed at while in Japan. My room was upgraded to a double for free, and it was very spacious and clean. I had a wonderful view of the sea from my room.

The location is very convenient, right off highway 77 between Anbo and the airport.

The staff here are wonderful. I arrived late in the evening in the middle of a big storm after being delayed all day in Kagoshima (I was going to fly, but had to switch plans and take the ferry). A staff member ran out to meet me in the rain and help me with my luggage. Everyone was so kind here. It's true that a lot of English wasn't spoken by all staff members, but one or two spoke quite a lot of English and I had no problems with my very minimal Japanese. Don't be afraid to stay here if you don't speak any Japanese, the staff will help you out. That goes for everywhere in Japan, really.

I didn't have time to try out the spa, onsen, or food here unfortunately.

Room Tip: Double size rooms have a view of the sea, I've read that the single rooms don't.

Very good gotel with great service and excellent restaurant. The hotel and restaurant staff spreaks little english but enough to be understood. We had an ocean view room which was large too. The hotel is somewhat old but very well maintenaid and as everywhere in Japan very clean. The restaurant serves excellent japanese cuisine for breakfast and dinner. It is however expensive but deserved. I strongly recommend to have dinner at their restaurant since there is not much offer in Anbo. They also have a stone spa which a great experience.

This is one of the best choices to stay on Yakushima Island. It is larger and more modern than most accommodations, and has many excellent features and amenities. You have to do a bit of work to fit in, however, because the traditional reserve of rural Japan, combined with lack of English or other foreign language skills, will leave you in the dark about many things unless you inquire assertively and have the patience to work through the language problems. There is no signage or guest information in English, and the staff volunteers little information about how things work. You have to ask. That said, the hotel has large rooms and spaces (for Japan), is clean and functional, has an excellent restaurant (which requires reservations), a very nice spa and bath, fast and reliable Internet, and is very well located in Anbo. Japanese precision and formality means that you have to arrange even minor details in advance -- when you will have breakfast, when you will pick up your box lunch, when you plan to depart in the morning and return in the evening, etc. Be sure to inquire in advance about service timing anywhere on the island, remembering that this is backwater Japan, and business and services of all kinds are closed at hours and days you would not expect in the city.

We enjoyed a comfortable night at the Yakushima Green Hotel. The rooms are very very large by Japanese standards and we had an ocean view. A pitcher of ice tea was available in the room refridgerator which was very welcome, as it was extremely hot and we spent the day on a hike at the Yakusugiland. That night we dined in the hotel dining room tasting the kaiseki dinner. Flying fish is a specialty on the island and was included as one of the dishes.

Its best to have a rental car when visiting the island. Taxis from the ferry to this hotel are about 4 $49.00 (US) The hotel is somewhat isolated in Anbo, so its difficult to walk. Public transportation is not readily available and taxis can add up.

Service at the hotel front desk was gracious We would stay here again but get a rental car.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view.

This hotel provides a wonderful stay for all types of traveller. I think i would re-iterate what others have said though. The public areas are great and the hot stone spar / onsen wonderful. but the rooms look slightly dated compared to the modern hotels in tokyo. Facilites in the room are great but wi-fi was missing in the room. We just used the wi-fi in the lounge area.Room had a seaward view and was very large (great in fact) with a seating area. Free green tea in the fridge and flowers on the tables.

Some staff could speak english and we got by ok. They managed to book a guide for our walk for us (Cameron from NZ). We would recommend that anyone travelling to yakushima gets an international driving license and hires a car (goto tourist info on the miyanoura port (white building on right as you exit ferry) as it is not that expensive and it is easy to drive around the island.

Room Tip: get one with a sea view

Although if you don't have a car for the JR you will be more stuck.... we moved onto the Yakushima Green Hotel for one night after staying three at the JR Hotel since they didn't have a forth night available at the time of the booking. The Yakushima Green Hotel obviously is closer for the ferry and the inland roads to the cedar forests and reserve.

Breakfast was not as good at this hotel than the JR. Western food items were not available so if cold raw fish is your thing for breakfast and dinner this is the place to be. If it's muesli, cakes and a cooked breakfast you may be disappointed. The dinner consisted of a slap up fish course with crab and flying fish. In Yakushima they love to eat their flying fish.

Something to note is that they have undergone a sign-age change and call themselves Yakushima Spa Hotel dropping the "Green" so if driving yourself it's a bit confusing. I had the grid reference point in my GPS smartphone device and did a lap around the hotel looking for the mythical Green Hotel.

“Great Hot Stone Spa- very spacious rooms”

There was no English spoken at the front desk, they were a bit sceptical of our long dreadlocks and worn out looks after a day of hiking. We decided to splurge here and it was 14000 yen for two plus 800 yen each for the stone spa- which you must must try.

That works out about 220 NZ dollars which is 5 star hotel material here but it was good pretty good value for Japan. Amazing view of the sea from our rooms which were spacious and a tiny bit dated but we had two comfortable double beds and tea facilities... after staying in Minshuku for 4 nights it was a nice change.

For some reason they wouldn't let us dine in the dining room- and we couldn't communicate with them to find out why- but we found two good restaurants nearby- St Pote and Yakudon.
