We had a 2-night stay in Hotel Luisiana last week at the end of our third trip to Costa Rica. The hotel is only 3 years old, well kept and very safe. I could not find it without a GPS but that is true about most places in Costa Rica since they don't provide signs for street names yet.

Your best friend there will be Yuri the driver; he can take you nearly anywhere in the city, will charge you about what a taxi will cost but you can be sure of where you are going and your safety in getting there. He knows shortcuts that taxis probably would not take and don't forget to ask him what he will do for you if you want to spend the day visiting Volcan Poas. For about $120, Yuri will take you there, assist you with finding a good eating place and back. That is a bargain... we should have done it. They don't advertise this service so you have to ask Yuri.

We had 2 issues with some staff members, one with ordering in pizza (the guy ordered an extra one for the staff on us not knowing my wife's first language is Spanish) and the other was with an auto rental; another staff member wanted to make money on our rental and offered to secure a rental for us but it was both not what we requested and not a bargain. To top it off he and another staffer, Carolina were rude because we didn't accept his offer. Carolina refused to even acknowledge we were in the lobby after that, she is being retrained as I understand.

I wrote Ivan Sala, the owner of the hotel and told him about these 2 issues and he wrote back promptly and assured me that he would address it with his staff and make changes as required and offered to make it right on our next trip. What a man of integrity! We are very pleased with his response. Until he is able to retrain his staff, I would recommend caution when allowing the staff other than Yuri to assist with "services."

The hotel is a great place so head on over there if you need a place to stay in San Jose.

This hotel markets itself as being close to the San Jose airport - but in reality it takes a solid 30 minutes to get there because of the crazy traffic. It's a beautiful place with yummy food and great service, but it is NOT a hop, skip, or a jump away from the airport.

We needed a hotel for just one night as our flight got into San Jose late and we were heading out to La Fortuna the next day. I chose Hotel Luisiana as it was inexpensive and seemed to get good reviews...and it was perfect. The hotel is small and charming, our room was spacious with a nice flat screen TV, good A/C, large bathroom and shower, a fridge, etc. Even though we arrived after 9:00 pm, they kept the kitched open and brought up food to our room. Everything was delicious and the portions were generous. While it is not a 5 star hotel, it is well worth the cost and I would definately stay there again.

This hotel was beautiful and price was very reasonable. The outside is deceptive, it doesnt look like much at first. The room itself was very clean, the bed was wonderful and the bathroom was excellent (by far the best shower of all the places we stayed in costa rica). The staff was nice, not overly friendly but courteous. Check out was effortless. The only negatives-while it looks like it is a short distance from the airport it is actually quite a drive (about 15-20min depending on traffic). The shuttle the hotel offers is 20.00, the same price as a taxi. If you are staying to be close to airport add this into the cost of stay. We took a taxi that evening to a very populated area for dinner, this ride was only 5.00. We were very pleased with the room and bathroom. The security was very good. The hotel shuttle should be included or at least discounted.

We stayed in Costa Rica for 8 days and were most pleased with our stay here. The rooms were very nicely furnished and clean, the service was great and the value was over the top. Our room even had a computer with international access, a kitchette and free internet calling. For the price we paid, it was a fraction of our percieved value. It is gated and secure and a gem of a place to stay. We plan to go back for sure.
