We stayed Four Nights !!! and we will be back with friends. Easy to get here if you use their "Package plan" . The "Diredct high-way bus" is the only way to go. The little town is 20 mins. walk from the Onsen, go up for lunch, and check out the village. Then back in time for their "Traditional Open Air Bath" !!! The Food, is more than you need to eat. It was all good. The beer and the saki can't go wrong. Every one was so nice and did their best to make our four days the best. Free internet in the rooms made it nice. The Owner Mr. Kashiyabara even drove us to see the Dam. And the cost was such a deal . We did not see any Bears but the town people have their bells when there are going about.

Room Tip: Take a room with a "porch". We had a room with our own Onsen and it was ok, did like the p...

My wife Anne and I stayed two nights- and had the most fabulous time at Kashiwaya! The hospitality was outstanding and we did all the usual things- taking the baths, walking in the environment, eating just wonderfully prepared and served food.
We were unsure what to expect but our friend Nicole recommended we stay- the experience was just wonderful.

We can't wait to recommend this experience to all our Australian friends

Room Tip: Just enjoy the total Japanese traditional experience

My sister and I stayed here for two nights. I agree with previous positive reviews and would like to add some details. The breakfast room has a wonderful Frank Lloyd Wright feeling, as some other details in the decoration.
As we had a full day there we took the opportunity to make a walk : we went as far as Maya fall : it was beautifully frozen ! On that walk we saw a male monkey run away from us, and once back in the village a whole group of females and small ones feeding on the bamboo.
But the greatest asset is their "Package plan" : they book for you a seat on the high-way express buss for a very reasonable price. Very handy for foreign tourists.

My wife and I visited the Kashiwaya Ryokan during our first trip to Japan, in February 2013. It was an excellent experience overall. Although not all staff were English speakers (and we could not speak Japanese, unfortunately), they all made every effort to make us feel welcome, and we all managed to communicate whatever needed to be said to each other.

The ryokan is simple, clean and attractively decorated. The three outdoor hot springs were all well-positioned in their own, secluded corners, meaning it was easy to enjoy nocturnal bathing outdoors, watching the snow fall.

The other highlight was the food offered at the ryokan, especially the evening banquet brought to our room. I won't be able to do it justice in words; needless to say it was delicious, and must be tried to be believed.

The general atmosphere at the ryokan was also very relaxing, lending itself to contemplation of the quiet, wooded surroundings of Shima Onsen. A good place to read books, relax, and generally take a rest from travelling.

Importantly, the ryokan staff explained all of the correct protocols to observe, in terms of when and where to take off shoes, what clothing is suitable for which occasions, and how to enjoy the hot springs correctly. These may seem like simple things, but actually did require a certain amount of explanation for the uninitiated.

Overall, the stay at Kashiwaya was the highlight of our Japan trip. It provided a great contrast from Tokyo and Kyoto, and was absolutely unforgettable. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the region.

The Kashiwaya Ryokan was a one-night visit on our self-drive trip along the Japan Romantic Road during Spring. We will come back again! The food and service, especially from Koyama and Sayaka, scenic views from the room and in the town itself, were something to behold. The management and staff were delightful and the community atmosphere within the town was demonstrated by a chance meeting of the owner of the Ryokan (Kaoruko) with her friends weeding one of the local stretches of roadside as their weekly activity. The local public onsen was great, but the choice of 3 private onsens in the ryokan was a special experience. The serving of dinner in the room by the staff was delightful and their recommendations for other eating or sightseeing experiences in the town was very honest.

Room Tip: Request for private bathroom facilities is not possible but the inroom toilet and private onsens are...

An incredible stay here. If I had to imagine the ideal onsen experience, the stay we just had would be it. I booked the entire bus round trip plus breakfast and dinner package. The bus leaves from near Tokyo Station and takes you to the historic onsen town Shima, in the mountains three hours north. The food was fantastic and the baths were great. This ryokan is in immaculate shape with a lot of attention to small details. For a foreigner wanting to experience an onsen retreat the Kashiwaya is ideal. The staff are friendly and polite and walk you through the bath etiquette. The rooms are japanese style with super comfortable futon beds
The town itself has public baths some of them historic. There is hiking and beautiful scenery.
