This is the most appalling holiday experience I have had. This is a hotel with a bar and accommodation in a very small village. Signs outside look welcoming, but do not be fooled. The photo above is NOT the Awakino Hotel. So just wanting to stay one night, have some drinks and not have to drive home, then taking a river trip the next morning. We did not seem to be expected despite booking. Having booked two rooms with en-suite, there was only one with en-suite available. The managment's response to that was that we could all share the room with the en-suite!! 4 beds - 3 people - we just took the two rooms. The toilet was not cleaned, one of the beds had not been changed. There were no tea and coffee making facilities or soap in the rooms. The restaurant closed at 7pm (on a Saturday night!!), the food was stale, over cooked (not blaming the poor cook as she single handedly did all the meals in the restaurant and the takeaways). We declined desert and breakfast the next day. The manager wanted to close the bar at 9pm as it was not busy!! Saturday night remember! So the four of us and one other client would be very early to bed! We did manage to extend it to 10pm. Other customers turned up but didn't seem to be made welcome so they soon left. Dirty hotel, unwelcoming management, the single beds very uncomfortable. Smelt of cigarette smoke - though there was a sign saying not to smoke over the pool table (all NZ bars are smoke free, apart from outdoor areas). Fawlty Towers springs to mind. If people don't want customers then maybe they shouldn't be in the hospitality business.
Even considered leaving and sleeping in the car.
