We visited the Traquair on 26-28 February with our dog.
What a warm, friendly place! The locals and staff alike were very chatty and friendly without being intrusive. For convenience, we had planned to eat there the first night and venture further afield on the second, but the food was so good that we ate there both evenings.
There are 2 dog-friendly bedrooms: ours was a decent size, warm, spotless, and no residual 'doggy smell' at all. The bathroom was a little tired, but it was clean and perfectly serviceable.
Our dog was allowed in the bar and we could have had our meals in there, too, but we opted for a little 'dog-free' time in the restaurant while she had a chew and a snooze in our room, bringing her down to sit with us after the meal. She was particularly appreciative of the dog biscuits doled out from behind the bar!
The locals were keen to recommend places to visit and I am glad that we took their advice to walk around beautiful St Mary's Loch. We couldn't hold them accountable for the conditions! After the atrocious weather in recent weeks the lochside path was underwater, but it is a stunning location spot and we managed to negotiate our way around nevertheless. Unfortunately the Tibbie Shiels Inn, the pub at the head of the loch, is only open in the evenings at this time of year, so we couldn't take up that suggestion. We had lunch in the Gordon Arms instead, which was very good.
The Traquair's real ale was superb - my partner was in seventh heaven, and even I enjoyed a glass or three, which is a rarity as I am not normally a beer drinker.
There was a good choice of hearty breakfasts, too, well cooked and presented.
This is a friendly, down-to-earth, family-run hotel that I would not hesitate to recommend. We hope to go back to the Traquair Arms - and soon!

We stayed here for a night after getting this as a gift for Xmas
On arrival I admit I was unsure but once inside we were greeted by Gareth who was friendly and more than accommodating without being over the top
We booked in with no hassle and got keys to our room number 11... Wow a huge room bright and clean with a modern bathroom , well presented and comfortable .
We chose to eat in the resturaunt here and were not disappointed !!! Food was delicious , well priced and service impeccable .
Staff were friendly but didn't "bother" you at table .
The bar is well stocked with a fine selection of Whiskies and other beers and spirits
Friendly atmosphere throughout
We had a really comfy sleep and room temp was just right
After a hit shower it was off for breakfast ,again nothing was to much trouble for the staff ,
Breakfast was lovely himself had full breakfast and I had poached eggs and haggis !
I can not fault out stay and will be back
all I can say is that it is a beautiful old building yes it needs a little tlc but don't as I did judge a book by it's cover
thanks to the staff for a great stay .we will book again! Maz and John

My husband bought a Groupon stay for our 25th wedding anniversary because he knows that I absolutely love staying at this hotel. We stayed on the 28th and 29th February 2014. Before going to our room my husband and myself popped into the bar for a drink. As on previous visits there was a lovely real coal fire blazing which was absolutely wonderful and such a welcome considering how cold it was outside. We popped to our room to dump our belongings and returned to the restaurant (we ate one night in the restaurant and another in the bar). The evening meal was excellent, good choices for both myself and husband (who is vegetarian). Lovely clean linen and plenty of bottled water, tea and coffee. On Saturday, following a 12 mile hike it was delightful to return to the hotel and have a delicious cappuccino coffee in front of the blazing fire (the fire was burning throughout our stay). The staff were all brilliant very professional, helpful and hard working. This hotel offers excellent food, wine, beer, whiskey etc and above all it offers an abundance of good old fashioned hospitality and value for money.

Room Tip: Would highly recommend this hotel the location is stunning and excellent value for money.

We bought a group on voucher for a 2 night stay, paying £100 for 2 adults and a £20 surcharge for our 3 year old. The room rate was £120 per night - which is frightening for a room that felt dreary, unattractive and a serious lack of warmth. Although clean, the stained carpet and marks on walls made the room feel dirty.
Positives - bottled water and plenty of tea/coffee and UHT milk
Plenty of towels
Large room for a family of 4
The weather was awful and the rain poured through the windows drowning our belongings left in the bathroom. I'm sure window sealant can't cost that much?
Shower was temperamental - hot to cold to hot
The room was seriously cold on arrival - a heater was planted in front of a radiator that did not work....took a while to warm up!
Can hear activities in other rooms - which would be a nightmare for our neighbours too as an excitable 3 year old generated a lot of noise (apologies to the couple next door!)
Reception was very unwelcoming - it was late on a Friday evening, perhaps the chap was stressed?
Food: had breakfast and the food was lovely
Service was THE positive of stay, the young lady serving tables was very friendly and helpful.
The dining room was in the middle of refurbishment? Hanging cables and unfinished fittings gave the impression that they were updating downstairs - hopefully the rooms will be next!!

Room Tip: I'd recommend a different hotel!

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.
We apologies for the cold and dampness of the hotel in your room, we have since repaired the seals on the windows as we are in the process of upgrading various parts of the hotel. We also were unfortunate and fell victim to the storms and bad weather that our country have been getting and we experienced problems with the boiler which caused the hotel to be cold. This has since been repaired. Kind regards

Positives.....
David Rogers, the owner, was very helpful, suggesting walks and activities.
Clean, laundered bedding and towels.
Lots of hot water.
Warm room. Although the heating was not on constantly, there was an additional little heater provided
Negatives....
Poor breakfast, swimming in oil.
The rooms and decor were tired, shabby and unloved.
The curtains were stuck, midway between being open and closed, and were hanging off the rail which was also hanging off the wall.
The entire hotel needed a good clean, the floors were filthy, especially in the breakfast room and bar.
Wires were hanging out of the wall in the breakfast room.
Damp patches on the ceilings.
The bedroom window was filthy, both inside and out, see attached photo

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!
