This hotel has an overated reputation. It was a long hike to a supposedly unique place which turned out to be a mediocre experience. Views are beautiful. The hotel is historically unique, but because it has not been updated you get the original mountain hotel experience with shared bathrooms, tiny rooms and creaky floors. All of that would be just fine were it not for the hefty price tag and the mediocre food served at dinner. Also be prepared for the slowest dinner service in all of switzerland: the dinner literally took 3.5 hours.

We just returned from a family holiday trekking in the Alps. This "hotel" was our third stop (of six) and by far the most expensive. We payed around 240 euros (including dinner and breakfast) per room only to feel that we had fallen into a "tourist trap". The place is literally falling apart, the rooms are in very bad shape, -stained ceilings and walls...- you have to share the toilet and showers (one toilet and three showers per every 10 rooms) and when after seeing this, we approached the person in charge to ask if there was some sort of mistake in the price, we received a patronizing: "This Switzerland you know". The place does have nice views (if you are lucky to get a room facing the valley), but as I said, we stayed in six different places and even the mountain huts we stayed in, offered a better service and were cleaner than this one. All of them have wonderful views.

If you expect high luxury, of course this is not the place. For people with a bit of imagination though, the Weisshorn is a must-do. First the stunning, and quite easy, hike to get there (we were extremely lucky with a gorgeously sunny June day, while it had snowed the day before!). And then, entering the hotel is like a trip back in time - make sure to visit the billard room. Speaking of a Victorian hotel, it would of course be great if they made proper tea instead of serving a tasteless tea bag next to the hot water, but then who cares? Bathrooms are spartan and shared, but clean. Rooms are comfortable and have gorgeous views. I strongly recommend paying an extra 40 Sfr and getting the superior room, it is worth the expense. Then go for a sunset walk, and sit down for the delicious dinner. You will sleep wonderfully well, have a good breakfast and embark upon the hike back to civilization, with a feeling of paradise lost.

Room Tip: The "superior" corner rooms are worth the extra 40 francs per night.

This was our slurge while we hiked the Haute Route. It was an incredible stay in a Victorian hotel. They have a fine selection of Scotch! Dinner was included in the price and after the main course of beef steak, the waitress came around and offered everyone a second beef steak before dessert. Yes please! The view from the dining room was incredible, overlooking the valley and watching a lightning storm roll in.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor. Built in the 1880s makes the floors creaky.

It's probably a five star mountain hut, but it's struggles to be a one star hotel. One bathroom for every ten rooms. Showers shared by everyone - men and women. Tiny bedrooms. Incredible location and excellent dinner made up for much of the disappointment but you need to know what you are getting into. The matron running the place was a nightmare and almost shoved our luggage out the front door.

I can see why this place gets mixed reviews. It uses the world hotel where I would call this a mountain hut all be it a very high end mountain hut. A hotel it is not. I know on our visit some USA based travel professionals were confused by the Hotel name but the mountain hut facilities and service. The food was outstanding as was the views and also a great walk back down to the valley in the morning. The host was more than a little grumpy but the other staff provided excellent service. This is for those who appreciate the surroundings and do not expect a hotel. Expect a mountain hut and you will be blown away.

This is the sort of place you’ll love or hate, I thought it was fantastic. Built by the English in the 1880s, it fell into disrepair but has now been largely renovated by people who want to keep its Victorian character. In keeping with the Victorian age you will not get an en-suite room, you’ll have to use the (modern) showers and loos at the end of the corridor. The hotel is full of old world character, and is something of a charming one off. A more modern addition to the hotel is a dinning room with panoramic views, where the food and service were easily the best we encountered in a two week trip across the walkers’ Haute Route.

The views from the hotel which is at an altitude of 2337m are spectacular, the sunset we witnessed while having dinner was one of the most magnificent I’ve ever seen.

The guide books rave about this place, quite rightly so in my opinion. A note about the guide books: The hotel no longer does dormitory stile accommodation for back packers, there are only 1, 2 or 3 bed rooms at prices which are hotel prices, not cabane prices.
