“Great place, but be careful!”
Reviewed 24 October 2013

The hotel was very nice, but we had some problems with their front desk. Be careful if your arrangements are somewhat complicated!

We were a group of 14 hut - to - hut hikers who stayed at H. Berghof 4 times (each for one or two nitghts) over an 18 day period. For the front desk, this seemed to be a challenge.

They more than once lost reservations for 1 or 2 on the trip. Originally (when the reservations were made) the arrangement was that one person was to pay for all (we sent $$ to him before the trip), but we soon figured that we had to give up on this. One of the lost reservations caused me to stay in a double room (vice a single), and in spite of the fact that they admitted the lost reservation was their fault, I ended up paying the higher rate of the double. I first paid for half of a double (which I questioned at the time - the price was cheeper than a single), then the next morning they recognized their mistake, and I had to pay for the full double. No negotiations were possible.

If you like a property that is in a perfect location this is it. Located in Wilderswil, Switzerland just outside Interlaken the hotel is at the end of a small street on a small hill. The rooms are very comfortable and the view from our patio room was magnificent. Snow capped mountain peaks, green valley and sheep with bells on roaming the meadows. Breakfast was very good each morning and the one dinner we had here was excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. Only draw back for us was being with a group on a bus we couldn't drive up the small road but had to walk 10 minutes to the hotel. However the staff would drive a car to the bus for all those that couldn't walk up the hill. If you are in a private car you can park at the property without a problem. There is a swimming pool here that is operated seasonally and it was not open at the end of September while we were there. There is a nice lawn with tables and chairs looking out at the mountains and meadows where you can relax on a nice day. Do not hesitate to stay here. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that looks out towards the Alps.

Knowing the area, we made the reservation despite some comments that this hotel is too far removed and up the hill from public transportation. This not a problem if you visit by car and are able to drive uphill on curvy narrow road.

Without asking. we were offered what is probably the best room in the Chalet which only has a few rooms, ours quite large including a pull-out sofa. The only issue is that WIFI coverage is poor, at time nonexistent. While we liked our stay and the views on the three most majestic mountains in the Swiss Alps. The only constructive observation we can make for the owners, is to carefully consider the impact of noisy groups (mass tourism) staying overnight, taking over the breakfast area's best view areas (despite assigned tables) intruding on other quieter guests, which may be more loyal and profitable in the long run.

If you have not visited the area, particularly Interlaken, be prepared to realize that Asia and Arabia are dominating the area, including many of the familiar shopping, particularly watch spots.

Room Tip: For a quiet room ask for the Chalet, although views maybe somewhat better from the main building.

Initial impression was that the hotel exterior looked a bit past its prime. When inside this soon changed as there was a very 'clubby' sort of decoration style which made it feel like you were at home. There is a lift and reception / owner speaks excellent English.

The room had modern fittings, clean and excellent although slightly on the small side.

Evening meal appears to be a more or less fixed main course where you are given the option of 'buying' 1, 2 or 3 courses etc. Not a large meal but ok.

Breakfast was a good selection of fruit and meats etc but was not topped up very quickly so get there early.

Switzerland is not cheap but the location of this hotel must be its 'trump card'.

Would I stay again - Yes

Wilderswil is a village that has not changed much in 50 years so the view from the hotel over green pastures with the sound of tinkling cow bells and a view of the snow capped Jungfgrau mountain is enough to relax anyone.

We spent two nights here and wished it was a week. It had the best views of any hotel in Wilderswil. We opted for half board so we received a great breakfast and a 5 course dinner. The food was excellent and we felt well worth the cost. There is a bar next to the dining room for those who prefer that. You can see Jungfrau from the dining room. All the staff were helpful and friendly. In the lobby is a continuous feed of the local mountain webcams and weather.
We walked from the train station and is was an uphill hike but worth it for the view. We later learned that we could take the 105 bus (across the street from the station) to the Wilderswil Dorf stop, backtrack to Kirchgasse (at Hotel Baren) and turn left. This eliminated two thirds of the walk. Going back to the station is all downhill and not a bad walk. Look at Google maps and memorize the route before you go. There are taxis available but I would suggest you call because we only saw one at the station during our stay. We would recommend Wilderswil over Interlocken unless one just wants somewhere to stay overnight and does not care about the surroundings. It is a lovely town.
One tip: You must lock your room with the key when leaving; if you just close the door like in most hotels, the door is not locked. There is a deadbolt for when you are in the room.

Brilliant hotel. Yes, it's a little walk to the station (about 15 minutes downhill, 20 minutes on the uphill homeward leg!), but SO worth it for the view the hotel commands over the Jungfrau area.
The staff are all very helpful and nothing seems too much trouble. They all seem to enjoy their work & are often checking that guests are okay. Delmira particularly was a delight and very hard working.
The breakfasts were lovely - don't know what more anyone could want. We certainly filled up in the morning and needed very little until the evening. We ate in the restaurant one evening, and the food was delicious, and fairly reasonable for Switzerland.
We asked for ice a couple of times as the weather was hot (very lucky after a month of poor weather), and we wanted to cool our drinks that we had in the room. No-one minded and we were given a large glass full of ice each time.
Additionally, our continental adapter would not work in the bedroom sockets, so Delmira found us one to borrow while we were there.
A beutiful place to visit, enhanced by a lovely hotel & great staff. My last trip to Wilderswil was nearly 50 years ago, long before the Berghof was built. If we get there again - which would be lovely - we would definitely stay at the Berghof. Thank you to all the staff!

Room Tip: We had room 17, which was on the corner, so had 2 balconies, one from the bedroom overlooking the Ju...
