View of the turquoise Lake Brienz on one side, and rocky cliffs (with waterfall of course) on the other side, the surrounding scenery is just spectacular. Room is just so-so with old furniture and church bell keeps waking me up at night. Decent breakfast. Overpriced for a Swiss B&B

We selected this hotel last year because Brienz is very close to the open air museum of Ballenberg. Because of terrible weather conditions we cancelled the morning of the day we were supposed to arrive and the hotel kindly allowed us to hold over the credit to this year.
So we finally made it to the Brienzerburli last weekend and were not disappointed! Staff at reception are friendly, welcoming and very efficient.
We had room 36 with balcony and partial view of the lake as there is a large horse chestnut tree in front. The quality of the beds was excellent with feather duvets and pillows (see note below).

Because the lakeside terrace of the Lowen hotel (which belongs to the Brienzerburli) on the other side of the road looked so invited we chose to have dinner there. Which was not the best choice. Service was excellent but the food not at all to our liking : my husband had ordered perch filets (I suspect they may have been imported but cannot be sure) and he was disappointed to find they were fried in batter. Iordered filets of John Dory in batter which were bland and instead of the batter being crusty it was soggy and rather chewy. We would have done better to eat at the Brienzerburli's main restaurant where, it turned out, an Appenzeller men's choir were staying and who entertained all guests, singing throughout the evening. Which we enjoyed very much.

Overall we very much enjoyed our weekend away.

The Brienzerburli is an authentic Swiss Chalet type of hotel.
I have stayed there twice. Once in a budget double room which was definitely budget but I returned because the hotel itself is great.
This time We stayed in room 31 which is a superior double room and it was perfect. The bed was comfortable with lots of space and it was spotlessly clean. The bathroom had a shower and no bath but that wasn't a problem for us.
Yes, you can hear the church bell but there are not many places in Switzerland where you can't.
The hotel is situated a short but level distance from the train/bus station but again, no problem because you would be walking that way to see the shops etc.
The staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant is great.
The only negative was the breakfast. The choice was woefully dismal but having said that there was plenty to fill up on, just not much variety.

Room Tip: Choose a superior room.

We stayed in the Lowen
Nice interiors with Excellent view of the Brienz lake from the Balcony and also from the Rooms
Stayed together with family in July. The hotel arranges for the pickup from the railway station.
The Hotel staff were very good. Also the food from the restaurant is good.
Nice romantic location.
We miss the hotel very much. Willing to go back again

Room Tip: Select Lowen, look for the 2nd floor facing the Lake.

The Brienzerburli Hotel in Brienz is on the main street towards the west side of town facing the beautiful lake. We visited on a nice warm day in September, exited the train station, and drug our bags to the hotel. Too far to drag heavy bags, upon arrival at the hotel I realized they had a van that would have come to pick us up. Use their free shuttle to get to the hotel, we used it getting back. Walking to the train station without bags is fine, we did it at least twice. The hotel is fine, updated bathrooms. We staying the honeymoon suite which is different in decor and a sloping attic type ceiling, but has a balcony that opens toward the lake. Beautiful view and nice to have fresh Swiss air. Hotel owner Peter was the best part of the visit. He sat with us at breakfast one day (I am a descendent of families there in Brienz) which he already knew prior to my visit. We enjoyed visiting with him. We ate dinner at the restaurant twice, pizza one night and fondue the next. There is a nice outdoor beer garden area facing the lake. Breakfast is served buffet style with the usual Swiss items. This hotel is in a nice location (close to where my family once lived, just up the street). I would recommend it to visitors of Brienz. While in Brienz we toured Ballenburg Museum and took the boat ride to Interlaken. Brienz is so much nicer than Interlaken we couldn't wait to get back to Brienz. Ballenburg Museum is huge allow a lot of time when visiting there. All in all, we loved Brienz, one of our favorite places in Switzerland.

Room Tip: On the lake side with a balcony.

This is a very 70’s hotel. It definitely stuck back in time!
Our room was on the front of the hotel with a small balcony overlooking the lake, though the view was obscured a bit by a large tree.
The bed was ok, and as I’d read on here the sheets were dirty its one of the first things I checked….There were clean and freshly laundered.
The room décor and furniture are old, check out my photos of the phone and radio!
There’s a hairdryer, portable TV (forget a flat screen), electronic safe, and a complimentary bottle of water. A lot of the stuff in the hotel is hotel branded, which seemed strange for a small one off hotel.
There’s a DIY shower cubicle and w/c in one corner and the sink is actually in the room area, a sort of kitchen/bathroom combination.
The room did have a stale/fusty smell to it, but once the window had been opened it filled with fresh ‘lake air’.
The hotel does have a lift, a large car park over the road at the front and more spaces to the rear of the hotel. The hotel is almost the first building on the left as you enter Brienz from the east along the top of the lake, and it’s about a 15 minute walk to the other end of the village.
Breakfast was included in the price, and was basic, and the quality was ok.
The restaurant area is quite large, and we had a beer in there in the evening, and checked out our day ahead using the free public Wi-Fi.
The restaurant was filled with I think all the villagers over 80 that night, playing cards.
Overall a reasonable hotel, though overpriced in my opinion (£122 b&b), even if you are in Switzerland overlooking a lake!

Room Tip: Ask for a large room
