“a nice hostel to spend a weekend on the lakeside”
Reviewed 17 August 2012

Very nice location in a calm area on the lakeside, great opportunity to rent kayaks for free and good facilities to cook in the kitchen (although only one cooking plate). The room was quite basic, a bit too expensive for what it was (no private toilet), but we had a sink and a balcony with view on the lake. To be recommended when staying in the area.

The Lakelodge is like a summer camp in the best possible way. Homey wooden cabin, common area with dining tables and basic kitchen with all utensils and appliances provided, free kayaking and an unbeatable view. If you're looking for total silence, privacy, and 4 star hotel beds, look somewhere else, but if you're looking for incredible staff, rustic adventure and clean accommodation, don't miss Lakelodge!

Our journey to the Lake Lodge vindicated our decision to choose it over places in the Interlaken town - the boat ride over the placid, picturesque Lake Brienz was a massage to the visual senses. The lodge is located a few minutes walk from the dock+bus-stop junction, and is on the bank of the lake, frequented by hyper-active ducks and swans. We even had to make way for a posse of arrogant swans crossing the path.
The receptionist was courteous enough at check-in, but we were not 'given' the lake-facing rooms citing unavailability. The room was simple with wooden flooring (in fact the entire lodge was wooden and a bit on the noisier side with all the movements in the corridor and staircase). There was no attached bathroom, but the common one was maintained well enough. There was an attached balcony, but the view wasn't attractive enough.
One of the inconveniences is that the neighborhood convenience store (the only one in Iseltwald) shuts down quite early in the day. We did manage to go to Interlaken to buy some groceries and utilized the kitchen facilities that the lodge provides.
However, despite all this and despite our intent to relax (we also spent considerable amount of time feeding the ducks and walking on the lake front), we did end-up feeling bored towards the late evening with nothing much to do - the location showed up as the 'double-edged sword'!

The area itself is outstanding. Hostel location is right on the edge of the lake and central in the village. The hostel though is basically a wooden house and you can hear the noise of every single other guest through this kind of structure. Extremely basic for the price but I think this just relates to the cost of Switzerland in 2011. I would definitely go back to the area but would just accept that prices are high and try to look elsewhere. If money really is tight though - it's a good option for a night or 2.

We left it a little late to book our hotels near these beautiful alpine lakes and were left with few options, hence the decision to go with Lakelodge against the advice of some of the reviews on here.

Truth be told, the location is outstanding- I really liked Iseltwald, a small idyllic village on lake Brienze. I think all the private rooms have a balcony overlooking the lake and it was a joy to sit and soak up the atmosphere of the pristine alpine lake while enjoying a coffee- or beer depending on the time of day. I think some of the dorms don't have a balcony and that would certainly detract from the experience in my opinion. The balcony and the view were the only things really worth paying for.

As for the rest of the hostel- there really isn't much good to write about. Due to the wooden floorboards the whole building sounds like an old creaking ship and is by far the worst soundproofed hotel I have ever stayed in. Even when trying your hardest, it is almost impossible not to cause a racket with every rustling of a plastic bag or step on the creaking floor.

The breakfast was hardly substantial as other reviewers have noted, but that didn't really matter anyway for us because we only got a chance to eat it on one of the three days we stayed there. For a hostel in an outdoorsy part of the word renowned for its hiking trails, would it really be too much to ask to get one member of staff up to cut some bread and dish out the sliced cheese and salami at 6 or even 7am? The 8am start time certainly ruled us out as we wanted to make out most of the days on the peaks- which are amazing by the way.

All in all, I would definitely recommend staying in Iseltwald because it is such a beautiful spot, but only go with Lakelodge if your options are limited- as ours were.
