“Second Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014

We repeated our stay for this year's Silver Flag. Sylvano greeted us like friends and we had another lovely stay. A new foal for one of the horses, goslings for the geese, and we saw the arrangements for a lovely wedding. Once again, we had wonderful time and the close proximity to Arquato made the Hill Climbing days less stressful. Ample parking for our tow car and trailer.
We hope to return next year too.

Room Tip: I would choose a barn conversion room overlooking the courtyard.

Maria Enrica, the sweet little owner, has done a fantastic job restoring this country villa to its past glory. She inherited this semi-abandoned villa at the base of the magical foothills northwest of Parma 30 years ago. Since then she has painstakingly unearthed a beautiful gentle men's country villa with ties back to Verdi who was born not too far away. She has tastefully selected antiques for each room that feel clean, comfortable, and uncluttered. My wife and I agree that the website photos don't do the rooms justice.

With an bottomless cistern of polite energy, Maria Enrica runs this clean, well appointed bed and breakfast with her 3 grown children. We enjoyed our stay so much we felt like family by the time we left. Please go expecting a casual atmosphere typical of a B&B where you find a farm cat who knows how to open doors, a vine covered veranda hundreds of years old, and the quiet whispers of fig trees outside you window.

Maria Enrica does not let her lack of English stop her from throwing lavish weddings for English and American couples alike. Come ready to do some gesturing and broken conversations, but she makes up for it with a generous abandon to do everything she can to make it a happy experience.

In the balance of price, location, and atmosphere, we consider this one of the best stays in our travels and already have plans to come again. BTW, don't forget to ask about her antique shops.

We found this place by accident as we were going to Parma Region for a food tour. First, the region is really beatiful. Lots of rolling farm land and cute towns. The nearby town of Castell 'Arquato is VERY close and could walk to if desired. The town is so cute and we had great meals and perfect experience. Very small town, but having drinks outside the castle in the a great little bar at dusk was really a highlight.

Now for the property itself! WOW! it's so amazing to drive up to the front gate and enter the estate. The property is incredible beatiful and well cared for. It's great to sit outside in the garden and see the castle/town and have a glass of wine. They have horses, geese, pigs, dogs and cats on the property and feels so quaint and amazing. The host , not sure of her exact name but we nick named her "nona" was amazing. She has an incredible spirit and lots of energy! She toured us around the property and was so excited. We didn't speak italian and she speaks little english, but it was incredible. She was simply an incredible hostess. The breakfasts were the best we had in Italy. This great dining room and incredible spread every morning. house made pastries, boiled eggs, selections of meat/cheeses, tarts, yogurt, cereal, etc. She ENSURES you are full! We stayed in the magnolia room which slept 4. The room was very clean and perfect for us. The building is amazing! We had a balcony that over looked the property and the value was simply amazing.

All was incredible, but the best part was the meal that "nona" cooked on Saturday night. They have a on site resturant that is open during high season on the weekends. They were hosting a 19 years old local boys birthday party. They invited us to the resturant that night knowing the party would be there, and ensured we understood it was a party. We were excited to partake in a local event, so we went! They made the most incredible meal ! I wished I could describe how great of food and expereince it was in words. The first course started with house made salumi plate and cheese, followed by a lasanga that was one fo the best things I have ever eaten. Think a bunch of small handmade ravoli topped with a cream sauce and pasta! wow! She then made a roasted pork loin, potoatoes with rosemary. The pig was raised on the propety and the rosemary came from her own huge rosemary plants on the property. She was very proud of this fact. They have nice white and red vino de la casa, The dessert was a homeade fig tart with black walnuts (all of it raised on the property) with a lemon Sorbet! WOW! Simply amazing. The resturant is cute and rustic/simple. The experience was priceless! We felt like royalty and she took such wonderful care of us. She is the person that is most memorable from our last trip and the property is someplace I will be back to visit soon! Get off the beaten path a bit and explore this area. It was beatiful and the people some of the nicest in all of Italy. We drove and stopped at small town markets, antique shops, had wonderful food and enjoyed the area and this property a lot!

Room Tip: We stayed in Magnolia with a party of 4 and was perfect for us. Views from the balacony of the tow...

We wanted to visit Piacenza and Parma and found Podere Illica by chance. They couldn't have been more welcoming; the setting is lovely; and a very reasonable price. Near to the Podere is Castell'Arquato - which we hadn't heard about and is splendid. Piacenza hasn't that much to offer. Parma - the old city - is very beautiful - and easy to wander round. So a great agriturismo and now I know all about Illica as well - he wrote the librettos for Puccini

My husband and i spent three nights at the Podere Illica, near Castell'Arquato last week. Our hostess, Maria Erica, was a star - the villa is charming, our room was super clean, sunny and supremely comfortable. The formal garden is lovely, with the first hills of the Appenines to the back and the plain in front. She is a woman of great energy and character, who works like a slave from dawn to dusk, to make all her guests happy. We ate at an excellent, inexpensive, unpretentious pizzeria in the village one night, recommended by our hostess, and, when not touring the vicinity (the Thermal Spa at Salsomaggiore is remarkable) I read my book in peace, surrounded by the sweet dogs and cats of the household, while my husband slept. The church and cloisters of Castell'Arquato are a knockout; Parma and the other towns of the plain are an easy car journey away. And the almost best thing: virtually no tourists.

Spent a night here and it was supreme. Lovely old villa placed a 5 minutes drive from an extremely charming town called Caste d'Arquato. The owners were extremely helpful, giving us a little tour of the place, and explaining the history of the establishment. The room was spacious and adorned with painting and other little perks like hand made wax finish along the frame of the bed, and so on. We hadn't enquired about the price before checking the place out and were under the impression it was going to be expensive. It turned out instead to be very reasonable.
Breakfast was nice, and the assortment of home made cakes the landlady had made the night before was really something. All in all I cannot but strongly recommend the place and I hope to return soon

We had two visits on the route to Toscany, and on the way back home.
The first time was warm and friendly, the second like old friends.
Beautiful rooms, fine people and a great breakfast. What else does a traveller need?
