“A Boutique Gem”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

The Crown is a small, but perfectly formed, boutique hotel. The rooms are very well maintained and have great modern touches; large walk-in rainfall showers, stone-tiled bathroom floors with underfloor heating and well-considered decor.

Staff are always welcoming, pleasant and nothing is too much trouble.

The restaurant serves nice food, both for dinner and breakfast.

Finally, the setting of the hotel is very picturesque in the lovely Suffolk countryside!

A very comfortable, quiet retreat with fantastic gastro pub attached.

Rooms are very clean and well appointed. Wireless network, good TV, iPod docking. Excellent.

This is my 3rd or 4th visit here and there'll certainly be a 5th soon.

This country hotel is very well appointed and in a lovely rural location, making it an ideal place for a relaxing weekend away with friends or family. The rooms are spotlessly clean and well appointed and the restaurant produces a good standard of bistro-style dishes and has a comprehensive wine list. The staff are very welcoming, efficient and well trained in the their various roles (sadly not the case in many UK hotels and restaurants). This makes staying at the Crown even more pleasurable. One small gripe: the ground floor rooms are not as well sound-proofed as might be expected in a modern hotel build but, all in all, a lovely place to stay.

Back at The Crown after 18 months or so and it remains one of the best places to eat in the region. The emphasis on first-class ingredients shines through.

Perhaps the star of the starters was mine: sweetbreads were balanced and beautiful with an excellent sauce. The other three were all lovely but didn't quite shine so brightly. A bottle of crisp white burgundy was judged to be just right.

Of the mains, Guinea Fowl was the stand out dish with a perfect rib-eye coming a close second. But again, there was nothing to fault with my roast pork or a beautifully presented piece of hake. The Ventoux that went with our mains was lovely too.

The dining room was packed and I imagine the kitchen running at full stretch, which didn't delay our meal in any way, but caused some complaint from our neighbours. Often, and loudly.

In all this tastiness I do have two niggles.

I like to have some bread on the table, especially when the sauces are this good. But as the staff were run off their feet I didn't quite get around to asking.

And secondly, when vegetables are a bowl of seasonal whatever, rather than a chosen part of a meal, I feel as though the kitchen has chosen the easier route. Perhaps it's an outside-of-London thing.

Overall a lovely meal that made four people very happy.

The bill was less than it could have been, and given the skills and quality of everything that was put into the meal it is very good value.

We won't wait 18 months before coming back.

Have visited the Crown a number of times, and have always had a good experience within the restaruant. Have just returned from a Sunday night stay, including dinner and breakfast, and thought we should share just how good the hotel is also. The hotel is small, stylish and has great attention to detail. Both from the design and finish and customer service. We enjoyed a wonderful meal in the evening, I have to say that the steak is superb and have had on a number occasions, as is their catch of the day. I would also disagree with the comments on service, based on our experiences it's always been good, even on busy days such as mother's day. I would most definitely recommend this place.

Room Tip: Worth paying that little bit extra for a superior room

It is lovely receiving feedback like this - will make sure that I pass on your kind words to all my colleagues. Delighted you enjoy the informal and relaxed but busy restaurant and in particular our beef, which is locally reared and butchered by John Coleman, a brilliant craftsman totally dedicated to quality.
