“An Excellent B&B in an Idyllic Location”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

My wife and I chose Poplars Farmhouse B&B after reading the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. After the exertions of preparing to move to the USA, we wanted to spend our final few nights in a quiet country retreat. We were not disappointed; this has got to be one of the best B&Bs you will ever find. Initially we planned three nights but after visiting Poplars to confirm our stay and meeting the owners David and Paul, we extended our booking to seven nights. The B&B is reached a mile or so down a narrow road flanked by ancient hedgerows and trees. Pheasants and grouse waddled along in front of our car before taking off and the grass verge was carpeted with blue bells heralding the beautiful countryside environs of the ancient farmhouse with its well laid out gardens. We were greeted by our genial host David who throughout our stay was sensitive and discreetly attentive to our needs. The farmhouse building is an ancient Grade II listed treasure dating to the 17th Century. The interior is exactly as you would expect with ancient beams, nooks and crannies and higgledy-piggledy staircases and floors. Beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. David and Paul have furnished it in keeping with the character of the building with an uncluttered mix of antique furniture and comfortable modern sofas. We felt instantly at home and spent most of our evenings playing scrabble in the quiet and comfortable guest sitting room. The views of the garden are stunning from every bright and airy room. The dining table seats up to eight guests for breakfast. The attention to detail in every aspect of this B&B is striking. As avid followers of Alex Polizzi in “The Hotel Inspector” and hardened travellers, there was nothing to be faulted and it soon became apparent that David and Paul are very particular in addressing every detail to make their guests comfortable. Paul said that they like it to be as they would want to find it as guests and have slept in every room to check their guests’ experience. We appreciated the flexibility in breakfast times as we were exhausted. Nothing was too much trouble for David, who thoughtfully brought coffee to our room on the one day that we decided to miss breakfast. The breakfast menu includes the usual toast and cereal items, and the cooked food menu is varied to accommodate all tastes. The full-English breakfast was exceptional with subtle touches such as spring onions sprinkled on the cooked tomato that only a chef would think of. And four varieties of jams for toast. It turned-out that Paul is a trained chef who prepares the food for breakfast before heading out to his work as a local landscape gardener. And David clearly takes a great deal of pride in making their guests feel as comfortable and appreciated as he can. There are two excellent pub-restaurants in Stoke-by-Nayland (The Angle and The Crown). Both are very good and provide a 10% discount for Poplars guests. We enjoyed several evening meals at the Crown which can be reached from Poplars in less than 15-minutes stroll on a beautiful footpath with stunning views of the ancient church in Stoke-by-Nayland as painted by Constable. A Watership Down field of rabbits with bulls - one of which apparently enjoys having its nose tickled according to David, and a walk in a blue-bell carpeted wood completed our idyllic break at Poplars Farmhouse B&B. As several other reviewers on Trip Advisor have said, the worst thing about our stay at Poplars was that we had to leave. We are looking forward to making this B&B a regular haunt when we return to England on future holidays.

My wife and I had a delightful one night stay at Poplars out walking the Essex Way for a couple of days. The house is beautiful, a quiet Suffolk setting, a few minutes walk to the village for excellent pub food. The room and service were terrific - friendly, warm, helpful without being intrusive. Breakfast also excellent. Thanks and well done to David.

It was a privilege to stay in such a beautiful home. Our room was spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated. We received a very warm welcome with tea and delicious home-made cake served in a lovely sitting room. Breakfast the next morning was excellent.

Without a doubt, this is the best B&B we have stayed in. Set in quiet countryside this is a beautifully restored and furnished building dating from the 15th to 17th century (depending on which part you are in). The excellent service starts from the moment you book, with welcoming emails from David enquiring about special dietary needs, time of arrival etc.

On arrival you are offered tea and home made cake, very welcome. This also happened each afternoon we returned, a lovely touch.

The rooms are tastefully decorated and look really good, fitting in well with the style and age of the house. We selected the Boat Room, furnished with a 4-poster bed which was very comfortable. The bathroom is good and the shower is powerful.

Breakfast is lavish with cereals, freshly prepared fruit, toast and cooked to order food including a vegetarian breakfast which was described by another guest as the best she had had.

Wi-Fi is available in the main rooms.

Local pubs in Stoke-By-Nayland are the Angel and the Crown - David will happily supply details (it’s best to book in advance).

Nearby are Sudbury, Hadleigh and of course Constable Country -Dedham, Flatford etc. Lots to do or just relax!

This was a great stay and we look forward to returning in future. Thanks David and Paul for your hospitality.

Simon and June

Room Tip: Boat room is great but the others also looked fantastic.

What a wonderfully relaxing experience to stay at the beautiful home of David and Paul, who were the most charming of hosts. Nothing was too much trouble, from being welcomed with a pot of fresh tea and cake to being collected from the local pub in the evening, suggesting interesting places to visit and even photocopying a map ! The breakfast's were cooked to perfection, delicious and plentiful. We stayed in the Panelled Room which was delightful, beautifully light, so spacious and warm, with lovely views to the garden.
A perfect break in a perfect home with perfect hosts.......what more could you want.

Fantastic hospitality, David was very accommodating and made a great effort to make the stay really special for us. After I contacted him he arranged bubbly, flowers and a room upgrade for us. The building is beautiful and set in a lovely serene area, can't recommend it more!

Room Tip: We asked for the 4 poster bed and it was fantastic.
