“Beautiful property in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

We have just returned from a week at Casa San Ruffino and can't wait to return to this lovely place. The Country House itself is exceptional. Very tastefully refurbished and each room has stunning views of the mountains and surrounding countryside. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms (which was still a very good size) and had doors that opened to make the most of the view. It really is an idyllic setting. We spent quite a bit of time at the pool and were quite often the only ones there. Claire and Ray were fantastic hosts. Very warm and welcoming. The area really does feel quite remote when you first arrive, but the information that they provide of the restaurants and the general area, really help you to make the most of your stay. We went to several of the restaurants that Ray and Claire suggested and each one was fantastic. Great food in stunning settings. We even made a slightly longer journey to Senigallia to one of two Michelin starred restaurants in the area, and again were not disappointed.
Le Marche itself is a lovely place. We were there at the start of August and although it was getting a little busier, everywhere except the beach was pretty quiet. We found Le Marches beaches much nicer than those on the Tuscan coast. We also went to Lake Fiastra for the day, which was recommended by Claire, which again, was absolutely beautiful. One week wasn't long enough to experience everything that the area has to offer, so we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: All rooms have the same stunning views and are furnished to the same high standard. Even the slight...

We spent 4 nights in Casa San Ruffino in June. We know Italy pretty well but this was our first trip to le Marches. We were not disappointed. In the first place the region is stunning, authentic and much less touristic than many other parts of the country. Casa San Ruffino fits very well in this context. The house and guest rooms are charming and comfortable and the setting and views are fantastic. We spent hours relaxing by the pool that is large enough to swim laps. The 4 rooms of the Casa are quite close by but that is not at the expense of privacy. A weak wi-fi connection in our room initially caused panic to this hooked writer but quickly gave way to a feeling of really being away from it all.
Our hosts Claire and Ray make you feel at home and were very helpful and gave tips that made our stay even more pleasureable. Restaurants in the area are excellent in romantic settings and at less that half the price of Tuscany's. We can highly recommend Casa San Ruffino and will definitely be back.

Hi guys,

Lovely to meet you both and many thanks for the review. We're really pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and nice to see people really embrace the local area and the non-touristy side of Italy.

We've noted your point on the weak wifi in your room and are happy to say we've since been able to find a reliable booster (the third one we've tried) for the house and guests now enjoy a strong signal in all rooms. We appreciate that people need to be connected these days so apologies it wasn't always a good connection for you during your stay.

Hopefully we'll see you back this way at some point in the future.

Thanks again for taking the time to review our B&B

Regards

There's Italy.. And then there's Italy... And Claire and Ray showed us the Italy I have always wanted to find... Spectacular scenery.. Sleeping in an Exquisitely refurbished country house/stables... The best in local Italian food and wine at your doorstep. You wake to the sound of sheep and their bells.... There is a gorgeous garden of lavender and bay leaf hedges and a Beautiful pool..

We stayed 3 nights and felt completely rejuvenated. Claire and Ray were wonderful hosts.. Very warm, friendly, generous with their knowledge of the local area and yet, you felt complete privacy.

One of the best Sangiovese's at their recommendation comes from a vineyard nearby (Dezi) .. And the food in the surrounding restaurants was just what we were after.. ..

There is no doubt Rome, Venice and Florence are what Italy is famed for and for good reason... But I would return to casa san ruffino again for its little bit of luxury in a little part of Italy that seems to get the important things right!

Thanks for having us!

Hi Alban, Belinda,

Really pleased you enjoyed your stay and found our local tips useful. Always nice when visitors to the region really grasp that Le Marche is as yet untouched by mass tourism and is indeed the 'real' Italy.

Hope to see you both again

Le Marche has the feel of the real Italy. Small towns, walled villages, rolling hills, sheep herded by dogs in the meadows and, at least in early June, few if any tourists. Ray and Claire Gorman's B&B is perfect. Attractive, clean beautiful vistas, and a pool that is swimable. The room was perfectly equipped. Ray and Claire have the restaurants totally wired. They give you perfect directions and know what is good and what is only so-so. They are incredibly nice and interesting people. It's 35 min from the beach if you are so inclined. Highly recommended!!

Hi Tom, Susan,

It was an absolute pleasure to meet you both recently. Always nice when our place is recommended to you by your friends and it works out well. You guys were great guests and your boundless energy in cramming as much as you could into your stay was very impressive.

I'll keep an eye on those sheep for you Tom and if the farmer is ever looking for a professional sheep watcher I'll be sure to let you know haha

Take care

Casa San Ruffino is a nice B&B with a very nice view. But it is "too British", too "B&B business" and not enough "Italian": liquid soap is Scottish, covers/furniture are English. The positioning is "minimal chic" but the breakfast is only "minimal"in a tiny dining room for 4 tables...The hosts do a very nice job in giving you restaurants and factory outlets hints and about sharing their second life experience in Italy and in maintaining a manucured garden...But, the price is too high for what you get compared to Relais &Chateaux in Umbria and 4-star hotels in Le Marche. Should be 30% less. What is pertubating too is to have to pay the totality 3 months in advance to a UK-Based bank account!! without any discount for pre-payment...Does not deserve to be in a lots of exclusive guides they are in. Too much marketing.
Also, if you are unlucky to get one of the 2 smaller rooms, you don't have proper internet access and the other guests pass by your window room constantly.
It was not what we expected.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Bed & breakfast. we are pleased you enjoyed your view and that you found our suggestions helpful. We would however like to respond to some of the comments you made.

We are indeed a British couple who have chosen to relocate to Italy. This is not something that we hide from our guests before they arrive, we do not understand you writing “too British” what would you suggest we do? Pretend to be Italian just because we live in Italy, we love Italy that’s why we live here, but we would never pretend to be Italian or anything else other than British. Barring us going back in time and suggesting our parents marry someone else we are pretty much stuck with and happy being British. I’d love to have had a Brazilian father who would obviously have passed down fantastic footballing skills making me the saviour of Scottish football, but alas my father is Scottish, oh dear! What do Swiss people like yourself do when they move to another country? Nothing, they continue being Swiss and I’m sure they are happy with that, why wouldn't they be. The publication that you found us in clearly mentions that we are British and if that wasn't clear enough our names are Ray and Claire Gorman, which are quite obviously British. If you don’t like British people and were ever in any doubt about the owners’ nationality I’d always suggest asking before you book.

The “too British” comment is clearly a personal one at us, as at the time of your stay we were the only British people here, everyone else was either Dutch, South African or Swiss. our Bed & Breakfast is open to all and we market ourselves as such. Having worked and lived all over the world we like to see ourselves as open to all and don’t exclude anyone just because of their country of birth.

As for our standing as a B&B we do not hide this fact, we are not pretending to be anything else nor would we ever. It is clearly stated on our homepage and the services we offer/don’t offer are also clearly stated on our website. If you were ever in any doubt you should have contacted us with any questions but you did not. If you expect the services and staff off a 4 star hotel I’d suggest booking such a thing and not a clearly defined B&B. There is nothing hidden in our marketing.

As for the furnishings etc being “too British” we have indeed supplanted the furniture bought locally including the wardrobes built by a local carpenter and the tables and chest-of-drawers bought direct from a factory in the next village with some little reminders of home including the Scottish soap which is meant to be ironic, sorry if you missed that. We furnish the rooms to appeal to all ages and nationalities. All the furniture in the rooms is Italian apart from the bed.

Regarding payment, we request 50% deposit at the time of booking or full payment in advance for stays of 3 nights or less, Our terms and conditions are clearly stated both on our website and also in the emails sent to you prior to your booking confirmation. Therefore allowing you to make the informed decision of staying with us or finding alternative accommodation if you do not like the payment arrangements or for you to question any of the conditions which you did not.

You were asked for full payment 3 months in advance because that is when you booked with us. If you booked 1 week in advance you would pay 1 week in advance. We have no input to when you book your holiday. Why do you think a discount for full payment is warranted? The price of the room was clearly stated both in our emails to you and on our site, if the price was an issue for you why book with us.

We ask for this amount as we are a small business and have in the past found guests who book for short stays sometimes need to cancel at short notice, these things happen but they can have a huge impact on a small business such as ours. Recently we have asked guests to make payments to our business Euro account which is held with a large international bank where our deposits are guaranteed. We made this business decision as our local bank has gone into administration and is currently being bailed out by the Italian Government. We think this makes good business sense. If our deposits are secure then so are yours. When the issue with our Italian bank has been resolved we will revert back to that. I fail to see the relevance of this comment!!

The breakfast room does in fact have only have four tables, as we only have four rooms and a maximum of eight guests we feel this is sufficient. There seems little point in having more tables than we have guests!

The prices of our rooms reflect the cost of running our bed and breakfast to the high standard we hold. This year was our first price increase in 3 years. Hardly a suggestion that we are squeezing our guests for every last Euro cent and pretty much every other review on this website shows that guests have rated us as 5 star on value-for-money.

The publication in which you found our details selected us. We did not approach them, nor did we pay to be in it. We were selected on merit alone. We take offence to the suggestion that we have over marketed our business and that we should not be featured in the guides we currently appear in. Every year we are approached by international magazines and newspapers looking to feature our bed & breakfast, none of which we have ever paid or approached ourselves. The guides and websites in which we feature employ professionals with a vast amount of experience in selecting, inspecting and independently reviewing each and every property they feature to a set standard. We are accepted through this process by every partner that we have ever been in contact with. They can't all be wrong!

We continue to offer our guests a high level of service and standard and we are very grateful to our guests who take the time to write a review of Casa San Ruffino. We know that visitors to this site will see on balance the overall positive reviews by previous guests of all nationalities, including the British !!

We cannot wait to return to this unique & special place, with such wonderful hosts. They have both truly forged such wonderful & lasting memories and we consider this our bolt hole away from the rest of the world. The house is beautiful, the scenery stunning & the hospitality second to none. This is our special place owned by special people & one that is shared by many. I'm writing this before we go, because we'll be too busy enjoying the views & hospitality when there and too depressed when we return home ... until the next time!

Stayed in September but only just found the time to review. Where do you start with this place..!! The property is modern, stylish but has cleverly retained it's original Italian character. The region is beautiful with stunning views from the Villa. The rooms are spacious, the gardens are immaculate and the swimming pool provides a great place to relax and take in the sunshine. Hosts, Ray & Claire (who were exceptional by the way) have an in depth knowledge of the area and went to the trouble of booking us into some amazing local restaurants. If food is your thing you might want to try this area instead of Tuscany, having been to both regions I prefer Le Marche..Excellent break and will certainly be back..Massive thanks to Ray & Claire!!

Room Tip: All 4 rooms are fantastic with excellent views!
