“Bags of character and an amazing breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2013

Just back from 4 nights at Hotel Le Berger. Could not have been happier with our choice of hotel. First impressions were good - (despite other reviews to the contrary, the hotel is not located on one of the worst streets in Brussels! Ok so it's not a traditionally scenic street, but it does house some very funky (and I suspect expensive) flats along with a couple of student flats too), the front of the hotel is smart and well maintained, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the hotel packed to the rafter with character (albeit a little eclectic in places!). We had booked one of the smallest rooms in the hotel and was actually pleasantly surprised that it was not as small as some of the other reviews would lead us to believe. The very stylish basin was in the room rather than the shower room, but we did each had a bedside table and the room had a chair as well as the bed. The shower room was perfectly formed - yes a little dark (but the make up mirror was is the bedroom not the shower room so that lighting level did not matter). The shower was superb - hot & powerful - and that's way more important than lighting levels. The breakfast was exceptional (even more so considering the price we paid for the room which inc breakfast) - with fresh fruit, yogurt, nuts, cereal, breads, rolls, biscuits, cake, crepes, pastries (pain au chocolat & croissants), ham/meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, tomatoes etc, several types of juice, & flavoured milk.
We arrived by Eurostar and walked the easy 2km from Gare du Midi to the hotel (glad we arrived in day light though as the area immediately around the station isn't the nicest of areas to be pausing to look at the map in) - but for those not wanting to walk, or not arriving in daylight, then the hotel is 3 stops on the metro and a very short walk from the metro station. The same metro station connects you to Heysel for the Atomium (same metro line so no changes required). It's also a relatively short walk from the hotel to the Palace of Justice, the Royal Palace and museums and beyond another 5-10mins walk to the Grand Place. We found everything within such easy reach that we only used the metro to go out to Heysel and the Atomium, other than that we were on foot throughout out 4 days.

Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again or to recommend to friends and family - but only those who travel light like us (it's not the place to arrive with numerous large suitcases due to the size of the lift/steepness of the stairs)

I spend one night here and was quite happy about the hotel. The location is perfect - especially if you have to work at/around the institutions and are a fan of Ixelles as well as the centre. The hotel is cozy, but probably not your choice if you are looking for 5-star facilities and service. I have to say that the rooms are very small though. I am not sure I would stay her (at least not in a standard room) had we been two people to share.

Worth a stop here if you like being away from the 'chain' hotels. It is quirky and a few steep stairs (there is a compact lift too!) and darkish corridors but I see that as a positive as opposed to a down side! The rooms are interestingly decorated but comfortable. Went for a room one above the basic option and this seemed to mean more space. Liked the 30's style bathroom and wallpapered TV!! Good location for Ixelles and all its bars and shops and nicely positioned off the main streets. There was some building work going on, however, this didnt cause any problems.

First off its up one of the nastiest streets in Brussels. Downstairs is nice along with the bar. That's where it stops! Get into the coffin of a lift to go upstairs to the dark dingy corridors lead to your room...did I say room? If you're lucky enough to be able to see, you may find the key hole to your room.

Dirty brown carpets, peeling wallpaper. A sink on a shelf next to your bed, which incidentally is one and a half inches off the floor!!! Good luck to your back!

There is roughly 2 feet around each side of the bed, no furniture...and I seriously mean no furniture! There's no frappin wardrobe! There is one hook on the wall and two on the door, that's your wardrobe. There isn't even a towel rail in the bathroom. The bathroom doesn't have a window or a fan! Don't use the toilet my friends because you'll be smelling it all night!

There is no main light in the bedroom or bathroom, it's just appalling, they market it as a 1920's theme, it's just an excuse for a shoddy pit of a room at premium rate. By far the worst place I have ever stayed. They may as well give you the middle finger when you check in ha ha ha! I'm laughing because I can't actually believe it ha ha ha! :0)

very near to business area.
very good and polite staff
very nice decoration and breakfast healthy and rich!
The room was tiny but it served my needs.
There is a metro station just 3minutes by foot and it is just inside a shopping street
The hotel is small but perfect for people who are going in Brussels for business and they need a clean room to stay, a friendly staff to give them the necessary information, a quite location where they can prepare their work or their meeting and a very good healthy breakfast for a good kick start of their business activities.
there are alot of restaurants in the area too (mostly fast food but some of them really good and cheap) and shops (but they close more or less at 18.00!)
The very heart of Brussels is just 10minutes by metro (changing two lines)

Although this hotel is perfectly located - near a metro station, on a bus line, walking distance to the Palais Royal and the art museums, even to the GrandPlace if one's legs can do it - we were disappointed in our room, not to mention the dark corridor outside our room, making it difficult to see the keyhole. We were led to believe it was roomy and newly decorated like the photos on the hotel website. But it was tiny, with no storage space at all. We were there for 3 nights and had to live out of our suitcases. There were no shelves, no drawers, no night tables, no desk, only a little easy chair that was essentially inaccessible under the window. The WC and shower area were beautifully tiled, but almost unlit - it was incredibly dim in there, definitely a safety hazard. There was a tiny sink in the bedroom right up against the bed practically, and not attractive at all. The window faced the street so it was a little noisy late at night as late returnees came in talking quite loudly, not to mention the construction project (mentioned in other reviews) that started early on the weekdays, and at 5:20 a.m. even on Saturday. We had to keep the window open in order to have any air in the room. My husband nearly bumped his head each time he got out of bed and had to pass them (they opened INTO the room). And the wi-fi did not work reliably at all. Sometimes my husband had to go out of the room to catch the signal or even to the front desk. That was extremely frustrating and nothing the front desk did really helped, although they tried.
Having said all that, we got used to some of the difficulties. On our last morning, when we complained at the desk about the wi-fi in particular, we were offered breakfast. Usually it costs 10 euros per person, for a cold buffet including the usual bread products plus delicious cheeses and some meats, so we were happy to indulge in it. (One other morning we ate at a little cafe down the street for 7.20 euros for really good coffee and croissants for both of us) The front desk staff is EXCELLENT and they try hard. We mostly dealt with Luce and Yasmina who are absolutely delightful and really did their best to accommodate our needs. We hope the hotel will see to it to commend them.

Should you look for a discrete place for a date, this former charm hotel is a place to be. Past is reminded everywhere despite the fact Le Berger is now an hotel where to spend nights near city center. PM formula gives you access to the very old times of the venue. Rooms have been renovated in respect to the Art Deco initial style of the place, even if in some rooms bathroom could be very tiny.
My favourite rooms are Ambre and Jeanne (superior rooms) and Lola (std room).
Definitely the best way to combine high level accommodation and souvenir from Les Années Folles. I'm glad Le Berger escaped to destruction and managed to keep its soul...
