“Cosmopolitan neighbourhood restaurant”
Reviewed 5 March 2014 via mobile

We like Brussels for its unique mix. It is both international, the capital of Europe, and very much itself. If Belgium exists at all, it is to be found in Brussels. The Toucan sur Mer seems to embody these qualities. It has the feel of a neighbourhood restaurant, with many regulars occupying the small, closely set tables, a French patron, waiters who speak English if necessary, and excellent fish and seafood! Most dishes are prepared in a quite traditional way, which means you can really appreciate the fresh fish. Go here for lunch and get in the mood.

“Greatest seafood in Brussels ! Bravo Jean - Michel Hamon !”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

Fantastic seafood. Jean-Michel Hamon, the owner, a great manager ( originally from Bretagne ) and so enthusiastic ! I love it.
The restaurant is lively with a super friendly & cool atmosphere. It is essential to book a table, as the Toucan sur Mer full every lunch and dinner.
The great think is they are ready to serve quite late, and you can also come anytime of the day to taste a few delicious oysters with a glass of chilled white wine ! I came a week ago straight from the airport at 16H30 and left at 17h15 and had 12 delicious different oysters...The service is charming and cheerful, and you can tell that they take pride in their exceptional products and cuisine.
Great extended wine list, prices reasonable for such a restaurant.
DO GO, no need to search for another more pricy and ...less good seafood restaurant. The Brasserie "Le Toucan " next door ( same owner )very nice too although more like a Belgian brasserie.

This cozy place combines great seafood, a nice atmosphere and caring service. It is a bit small, so you better book (we went on saturday) Recommended.

“Excellent food, especially the oysters”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

I went to this somewhat trendy place without a reservation: despite the fact that the website says that same-day reservation are accepted over the net until 5, my request was not acknowledged until the next day. No matter, really, since I went early (19:00) and a table was available.
Food was excellent: oysters (even though it's early days yet at the beginning of September) and a very nice sole, cooked perfectly. For dessert, I followed the waitress' advice for a pain perdu (luscious, caramelized, over-the-top good) that I would never have chosen on my own.
Service was very good, as should be expected in a restaurant of this class (although one waiter was kind of remarkably clumsy, everyone else who took care of me was entirely up to standard). Prices perhaps a bit high, though not out of line generally for top-flight restaurants in Brussels. Ambience fine, if a bit informal.
Lots of other seafood on offer that looked very good. I'll definitely be back for a try at some of these things.
Overall, a fine choice for a seafood meal in Brussels.

“Great Food, Great Place - Take Plenty of Cash ;-)”
Reviewed 29 August 2013

The Toucan - both the Brasserie and the Toucan Sur Mer - is a well established part of the gastronomic environment.

The Toucan Sur Mer is not a large restaurant and can get very busy so plan ahead. Once there, the decor is impressive as is the display of seafood on offer. The food is very fresh and very well prepared and presented.

However, be aware that a large appetite, an aperitif or two - try the chilled vodka with blinis and caviar - some accompanying wine or champagne, and the bill soon reaches dizzy heights.

Regardless, this is a definite must if you are in the area and is especially suitable for a romantic celebration.
