“Good for a longer stay but no AC in May”
Reviewed 31 May 2012

We stayed at the Citadines which is a typicla apartment hotel. In May the days were HOT but the AC was not working so sleeping at night was uncomfortable. Since we had a room on the first floor we could not keep the window open since the street was noisy.
Close to a Metro and restaurants nearby but far from the Grand Place. Free Wifi was a bit iffy. Breakfast was good but at 14 Euro a bit too much.
Espreso machine in the lobby was a bonus.

Room Tip: Try for a room on the higher floors

The room we had - 310 - was cramped. The lighting is poor making reading difficult. The hob was dirty. There is a toilet separate from the bathroom which would be good but there is no hand basin in the cubicle. The area is good - easy access on foot or by metro or tram. Good supermarket just around the corner. The hotel staff did not bother to acknowledge guests and never smiled. There are lots of nicer places to stay in Brussels.

Room Tip: Room was cramped. This was a studio room which booked in order to be able to prepare our own meals...

...there is hardly a better location to stay in Brussels. Close to excellent public transportation both subway and tram, the place is also in walking distance to good theatres, and the old city centre.

The rooms are well equipped, good in size, and clean. There is a proper bathroom, a separate toilette, and a kitchenette that even has a dishwasher – I haven’t seen that before in a hotel/aparthotel. For self catering this is a good place. A supermarket, which is open seven days a week is 50 steps from the entrance. Staff is as helpful and friendly as one can wish for.

The only drawback in May 2012 is the ongoing major renovation works at the first floor. Unfortunately I had chosen the citadines – as it was recommended to me – as a quiet place to sit at my desk and work. Well, this was not possible, but this can happen in any accommodation no matter when and where.

Since the Royal Library is not far one could at least go there to have some calm. If you only stay the evenings, the construction works won’t bother you. In any other case I recommend to ask in advance, whether the works have finished or not.

Room Tip: Rooms to the backyard Ok, sunny if there is sunshine in Brussels

The apartment-style accommodation was very comfortable and well-priced, with a spacious living area and bedroom. The kitchen was well-equipped and there was a separate walk-in wardrobe/storage area. For self-catering convenience, there is a supermarket located just around the corner and a charming deli/cafe only a short walk away that offers pre-prepared hot meals and gourmet delicacies. The location is great; there are numerous restaurants in close proximity, as well as a metro station and a citysightseeing bus-stop. It's also not too far from the art gallery precinct. Staff are helpful and the apartment was clean and comfortable with WI-FI included.

Stayed there for a week, mixture of a conference trip and a weekend with the OH, found the reception staff polite and helpful and the room was comfy and clean. No complaints about the bed/kitchen area or bathroom really other than a slightly strange noise which came from the shower while you were using it. TV even had a few channels in english (CNN and BBC) which was nice. Location wise it's about 20 mins walk from Brussels central station although it's easy enough to get around on the metro (and there's a stop basically next to the hotel). Few shops and restaurants just outside the hotel including a supermarket just around the corner which is handy.

In Brussels for a business trip planned late and with my "priority" hotels booked out, the citadines Toison d'Or offered the most convenient alternative, in particular being placed 50 meters from an underground stating ("Louise") connecting directly to the Souther station and at (slightly long, 1.2 kms) walking distance from the European Commission district.
The hotel itself is nothing special, offering self caterig (with a kitchen) mini-apartment relatively small, but complete. The room is cleaned and towels replaced once a week (more, paying an extra) which is ok if you stay one or two nights. Wifi (not exceptionally fast, but I've seen much worse) included, breakfast on the expensive side (but inside the underground station there are plenty of options). Quiet during the night.
For Brussels, it's on the cheap side of the price range..
All in all, a good backup option.

Our family of four (sons ages 5 and 3) stayed in one of the apartments and were very pleased. The suite was large, and though minimally furnished with dated furniture, everything was clean and comfortable, including the queen-sized bed and pull-out couch. The walls are a bit thin, but we requested and received a quiet room in a quiet area of the hotel. The commode was in a room separate from the shower and sink, which I appreciated, and the kitchenette included a microwave, two hot plates, a fridge, a sink, a dishwasher (!), and dishes, glasses, and pots & pans. Since the kitchen was so well-equipped, we were able to bring our own breakfast foods and skip the €14pp breakfast. Underground parking is available for €17 per day, but be warned - if you have a wide car, you may have difficulty navigating the narrow turn into the lower level. The hotel is right next to the Louise metro stop, as well as the Louise stop for buses and trams (including the city sightseeing bus), which is wonderfully convenient. The staff were competent, and although they weren't rude, they weren't particularly friendly either. Overall, this is a solid 3-star option, and the apartment layout makes it ideal for families. I would imagine the smaller rooms would be more than adequate for individuals and couples as well.
