“Great value, nice setting, relaxed atmosphere”
Reviewed 9 January 2010

If you're thinking of staying at Pondok Baruna, go for the garden rooms at the back of the property - they are lovely, modern, next to the pool. The beach-facing rooms are older, smaller and many are very close to the restaurant and diving centre. Overall, our stay at Pondok Baruna was wonderful. These are modest accommodations, so don't expect luxury. But we were well taken care of and could access most of the amenities and services we needed at the hotel or nearby. Jungutbatu, where Pondok Baruna is located, is a fantastic location to explore Nusa Lembongan, and you have an opportunity to stay in a place that is right amongst the locals. Early every morning, we would go for coffee and the nice breakfast prepared by the staff, in the open air cafe facing the beach. We watched as the locals brought in and hauled around their daily seaweed catch, while children played on the beach and the tourist and dive boats came and went. It was lovely. Other than relaxation, we visited the island in order to go diving, and the dive centre here - World Diving - is superb! Very professional, friendly and knowledgeable dive guides, and the underwater sights are breathtaking. If you don't dive, go out at least once for a snorkel. On the day we did not dive, we rented motorscooters for about $9 US per day from Pondok Baruna and zipped around Lembongan, over to Nusa Ceningan and back. Highlights from around the Island include the Mangroves, Mushroom Bay and Secret Beach. Around Jungutbatu, there are many warung (cafes) and we were surprised by the consistently good quality of the food wherever we went. Try the Pondok Baruna cafe and the Bunga Bungalows Cafe for food, and if you need a fruity cocktail, Scooby's is the place to go. We stayed at Pondok Baruna in the low season (December) and the whole area was pretty quiet - not a lot of people around, which didn't bother us at all. We heard it gets quite a bit more lively in the May-November period, which may take away from the chill atmosphere a bit. Weather for us was mostly good but it does rain in the low season so be prepared for a downpour. Our overall experience at Pondok Baruna was good and we would recommend it for budget-conscious travellers who still expect comfort and cleanliness.

The sunsets and view from this guesthouse are just amazing, the food excellent and cheap too. Come on you moaning minnies- this hotel is $10 per night! Whadda ya expect- The Ritz? We stayed 2 weeks and found it just amazing! the staff are all just wonderful. Lets think typical cheap Bali- Bathrooms are never a priority and the Balinese just simply do not respond to rudeness- good for them. Our room was spotless. The associated World Diving are so safety concious, Sue and John bend over backwards to keep folk happy, their instructor Zack so patient. I nervous in the water I even went on to do my advanced dive course. If you want a quiet relaxed time in very pretty surroundings at a good price- this IS the place! I have travelled far and wide in my lifetime but this was the bast holiday I've ever had. I just can't wait to get back there next year!

A nice little hotel with a good pool and nice rooms where you can hire scooters, go on snorkeling trips, dive etc... However, the service was poor and in our case everything we asked was made to be a massive burden including being yelled at for returning scooters 15mins late which we had payed an unreasonably high price for. I'd say it was the worst place we stayed at in our trip around Bali in regards to the staff. Not the best location for swimming, there are lots of other friendly hotels near bye with room to swim in the ocean.

We stayed at the new Garden Rooms during a 3 nights' stay. The rooms are clean, tastefully decorated and of good size. There are 6 in total: 2 facing the swimming pool and 4 along the side. There is a small pool as well.

The rooms are not on the beach, but a short walk away. If you want clean towels, you have to hand in the used ones at the reception of the restaurant as these rooms are managed and maintained by the restaurant staff. The walk from the beach to the rooms is not great and you probably wonder where the staff are taking you when you arrive! The rooms have been built next to rather 'simple' accomodation of locals who make a living out of selling seaweed. Hence the smell as they put the seaweed out to dry... But they are fairly quiet and of better quality than most other rooms in the vicinity!

The restaurant is very good value for money with an extensive menu. Breakfast is included and also offers plenty of choice. They also lend motorbikes, but you are better of renting one up the road as it is a lot cheaper.

The restaurant is run by a few young men who can arrange a lot for you, but be aware that you pay high prices (motor bike, ferry tickets etc.). They also have a safety deposit in reception, but they are not keen on you taking out things on a daily basis.

Overall we were very happy with the room. They are great value for money (USD 35 incl breakfast).

Oh and the dive school is very professional!! Sue and John are great people and so are their dive instructors (very professional and friendly). We had a great time and 3 days was way too short!

Stayed here on the recommendation of World Diving ( good dive school!) and it is a great place! Rooms are basic, clean and the cold shower was fine..paying only 11$ per night what else can you ask for?!! The view from the rooms is AMAZING and the sunsets were breathtaking. the restaurant had the best food in terms of quality and value in everywhere we stayed in bali...would come back for sure!

We stayed in the beachfront rooms for 4 nights. For the price you could not ask for more. The bathrooms are cramped and do not have hot water and no fridge is avalible in the room. Hower ice cold water is avalible from the restuarant and you can definately get by without hot water for a couple of days. The staff are friendly and helpful, the food was good and filling and the dive crew great. I would definately stay there again. Watch out on the beach in sanur, men will take your bags from the back of the boat without asking and them demand money for it!

Stayed here while diving with the attached dive centre (World Diving - highly recommended), and found it to be a great place all round. They have two types of accommodation, a basic room with no air-con overlooking the beach, and some new and very attractive rooms in a rear compound overlooking the pool. We stayed out the back in the more expensive rooms but friends stayed in the basic rooms at the front, but either choose is good.

The staff at this place are the real highlight, friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The food at the restaurant was the best we found on the island and probably some of the cheapest as well.

This place is deservedly popular and even though we booked four months ahead we got the last two rooms in the place. Don't leave it too late!
