We stayed here for a few nights during our two week trip to Borneo.

The location of this lodge is excellent; right on the riverfront with nice observation decks and plenty of wildlife to see in the immediate vicinity.

The rooms themselves were fine. They were a good size and they were kept very clean. There was no aircon but that wasn't really a problem. The food was good, if uninspiring but you don't really go to a place like this for the food. And there was plenty of it. It was expected of guests to wear sarongs in the evening, and these are supplied in the rooms - all a bit of fun really.

The best thing about the place was our guide, Basri. I've travelled fairly extensively around the world and Basri was one of the best guides I've ever had: friendly, patient, efficient, excellent eyes and incredible knowledge.

All in all - a very good place to stay.

Cabins basic but very clean and comfortable. No Air-con but ceiling fan. Food was very good. Staff very friendly and helpful. Setting is on river and in jungle. Amount of wildlife seen from small boat was outstanding. Elephants, monkeys, birds, etc. Guide was excellent. A great experience. Run by SI tours and did great job. Memorable experience.
no insect problem. Would also be good place to relax. We are in a boat alot so be prepared. Traveling in by boat you stop at Abai River Lodge for lunch which was excellent.
At both places everything is above ground on boardwalks and flowers and butterflys everywhere. If you want to experience a river/jungle its wonderful, we're glad we did.

Stayed at the Sukau Riverside Lodge for 2 nights as part of our tour of Sabah. We arrived by boat upstream from Sandakan after staying one night enroute at Abai ( see separate review ). The trip upriver was very interesting and although at relative high speed, the boat did slow down and even stop when interesting wildlife was seen, e.g. crocodile and wild boar on the banks, not to mention the numerous wonderful birds.
Arrival at the lodge was very pleasant with a cold towel and drink. The Lodge is not luxurious but very comfortable and clean. The staff are very welcoming, polite and caring. Food was buffet style and was plentiful, hot and tasty; wine and beer are available.
The highlight of the stay was the early morning and late afternoon river safaris where one sees, at extremely close range : pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, long-tail, short-tail and pig-tail macaque monkeys, silverleaf monkeys, giant monitor lizards, snakes in the branches of the trees above your head and a wonderful array of large and colourful birds ( e.g. hornbills, kingfishers, harimony kites, egrets, storks etc. ). A further wonderful experience was the optional river safari in the dark after dinner, don't miss it if you get the chance. One sees numerous colourful birds roosting on the branches overhanging the river ( e.g. sharma, kingfishers, owls, babblers ) and snakes in the trees overhead ( e.g. viper, cat snake, tree snake ).
On one of the morning safaris we went ashore for a trek in the jungle (leech socks required ), this again was a wonderful experience to see the flora and small fauna such as bugs, millipedes, leeches and more colourful birds such as the Scarlet Rumped Trogan.
We also visited the Gomantong Bat Caves from Sukau which was interesting but not one of the highlights of the tour.
All in all yet another wonderful experience in Sabah.

The Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge may not be luxurious but it is well-located for cruising on the river and its tributaries which are teeming with wildlife (we saw 3 types of monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, monitor lizards, lots of birds but no elephants unfortunately). The food was very good and the service friendly. I would thoroughly recommend staying both here and at the Abai Jungle Lodge, which is even better. Both are operated by the same company, SI Tours, who were very impressive in organising our trip which also took in Turtle Island and Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary.

A group of us (8, from ages 12 to 60) stayed here one night through SI Tours. We also stayed at SI Tours Abai lodge one night as well. The two places are similar in that you get two single beds, buffet style meals and ceiling fans but no air con. I went in expecting to rough it and was very pleased with our stay. At Abai, I highly recommend the tree plant and lunch at Abai village. The staff were extremely friendly. It's a basic cabin with a small private bathroom. I enjoyed the food. The sleeping quarters at Kinabatangan were similar but the place is a bit bigger than Abai lodge. The meal buffet is a bit larger and they give you fresh sarongs to wear to dinner which was quite interesting! We absolutely loved our time on the Kinabatangan with our guide Usher. We saw elephants, crocodiles, all types of monkeys and birds... As long as you aren't expecting an air con villa or something elaborate, and you are there to experience the wonderful animal viewing and the hard working locals and guides, and you want to stay in a clean and very decent place, with very safe food and water, you will enjoy yourself. The whole complex at both Abai and Kinabatangan are on raised platforms with boardwalks so you don't have to worry about walking in slugs. While at the lodges you can walk around in flip flops. Everyone takes their shoes off prior to going in the dining area which is covered open air. Get to know the staff and your guide. They are TERRIFIC!
