if you are a budget traveller, i would say this is a good place for you. Friendly and helpful staffs in Arung Hayat. Good and affordable place for backpackers. The view from the balcony is awesome. Plenty activities can be carry on here. Full package from Tawau airport to the Mabul Island is provided upon request with reasonable price. The sea and the marine life is awesome if you join their diving activities. You will be pleased with the service provided.

The people there are not friendly, don't go there when the have ramadan, because the people are most of the day gone for praying. Bring your own food, because I was sick for 6 days after I left arung hayat! The rooms are small and not clean, we had ants in our room!

If you're looking for affordable, friendly owner, nice food, private bathroom kind of budget accommodations in Mabul, Arung Hayat Homestay is the answer. Yes, may be very basic rooms with fan but who cares since you will spend most of your holidays outside the rooms. The sunset view from the balcony is superb! The turtle....no need to dive because you can just see them flirting around during high tide. The best part, you can just seethe unique daily life of Bajau Laut just in front of your rooms.

If you compare dollar to dollar...it is really value for money.

Room Tip: request the rooms no 1. Superb view from your bathroom :)

I stayed in Arung Hayat with my boyfriend for a week in July 2011, and we really enjoyed the stay.
Sure the room was very basic and not particularly clean, but the owners were nice, the food was fine, and the overall atmosphere of the place was brilliant. Perfect for backpackers.

Don't expect luxury, but look forward to falling asleep listening to the waves right under your bed, enjoying a beautiful sunset, talking walks in the very cute fishing village right outside your door, playing with cute kittens in the common area (at least we got the chance to do that), and just hanging out and relax. Arung Hayat is a very 'local' and 'authentic' experience.

When we first arrived we forgot to ask about lunch hours, but when we got back from the beach too late, the owners quickly made us a nice leftover lunch anyway.

Compared to other places in Malaysia, it's quite expensive, but in comparison to local prices of this area, I think it's about the cheapest it gets.

If we were to go back to Mabul, we would probably stay in Arung Hayat again.

Although some of the staff are friendly, the service is not very satisfying especially the management. Super noisy and disturbing to sleep at night because you can hear rats running on the roof, facilities is not satisfying where the shower is broken, and the other room supplies like pillow are not replaced with a new one since the one we used looks so old and looks like there might have mites or mold in it.
Im sorry to say,but f i have other option, i would go to the other homestay,

Room Tip: Spherediver, Uncle Chang Homestay are better and more private.
