Scuba Junkie Mabul Beach Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 June 2014

I've been emailing a few other resorts around mabul and kapalai prior to my holiday. It was so hard at first because some other resorts they just refused to get us(me,my husband and 8yo daughter) permits to Sipadan because we are not divers. But luckily i found Scuba Junkie, thanks to Rohan who answered all my emails promptly and arranged everything for us including the permits to Sipadan. He asked me the flight details and he came out with everything perfectly...the itineraries, rooms, permits, snorkeling trips,transfers....everything...;D

ROOMS
The first two nights we stayed in an a/c room.It was spacious with one queen bed and a single bed.The room was cozy, clean and comfortable. My daughter really loved the hammock on the balcony.Every time after our snorkeling trips, she will sit there, munching on potato chips before she went inside to clean herself..The last two nights we had to spend in a fan room, although they provide us with 3 units of fan,i still think that of course a/c is really a necessary as the weather was hot and humid.

FOOD
They served the food buffet style and are plenty for everyone. The food quality was just ok and they dont serve any seafood. You can have free flow drinking water and coffee/ tea all day long.My daughter is a picky eater. She only eat plain rice and ommelette almost all the time, and the kitchen staffs were so kind and helpful, they prepared that for her and even packed those for us on the day we went to Sipadan.

STAFFS
Everyone was really helpful. They make our stay memorable by being so nice and warm.Special thanks to Wan,Catlyn,Syed, who made our visit to Sipadan as a perfect and satisfying experince.Bensar,Jordan,Lydia and all others, thank you for being so fun and assist us on snorkeling trips.Andy,my husbands DSC instructor, thank you so much because you are the person that make him hooked with this addiction (he is coming back to have his scuba license with you soon..;p)Our snorkeling trips were all perfect to various spots on the island. My daughter, with all the help from the instructors was so confident now swimming freely in the sea.I really cant say thank you enough for everyone that put extra effort in making our stay enjoyable.

So,yes definitely we will be coming back soon...Thank you Scuba Junkie..

Room Tip: Rooms 1-6 are better as there are not too close to the villagers side.(less noise)

Since we started diving in 2007 , we were dreaming of going one day to Sipadan. This year at last, we booked our trip. (Book Sipadan in advance, otherwise they cannot guarantee you you can dive there). Choice to stay was Scuba Junkie Mabul Beach Resort.
What a GREAT holyday !!!! From the moment we arrived, we got a very warm welcome until the last day when we left they waved us goodbye.
Everyone was all the time trying to make a success of our holyday. As we stayed quite a long time (12 days, most people stay shorter) they regulary asked us if we allready dived this or an other divesite and they brought alternation in our dives. Diving with Scuba Junkie is really great, divemasters know a lot to find and help you with the identification afterwards.
Their support for the sealife and the total nature is complete our lifestyle. Keep up the good work guys (and girls)
The rooms were nice and clean . Food was okay.
The most important : ALL the staff, from kitchen,to bar, to reception, diveshop, divecenter, all the divemasters (and those who were still doing their training) THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!! We had an incredible time.Love you all XXX Karin and Gerrit

We were so lucky that we got a night here even though we hadn't booked in advance. They've gotten a cancellation and off we went to Mabul. Actually we stayed in Semporna but as it is not a very nice place we had to figure out something else for a couple of days as we were waiting to go diving.
We left Semporna in the afternoon with the Scuba Junkie boat and arrived at Mabul at 4pm. Beautiful place! NIce, clean and spacious rooms with private bathrooms. Nice dining hall and bar upstairs. The food was good but nothing exceptional!

The nearby beach was nice (they had just had a clean-the-beach-day which might have something to do with it). You can't go swimming from the beach though as the water is not very nice. We went swimming and snorkelling from the jetty instead.

It's expensive though! We paid 185RM pr. pers. for one night for a doubleroom which included 3 meals a day and snorkelling equipment. Plus 50RM per pers. for the boat. Not exactly a backpacker's budget. We needed it though and it was worth it.

No complaints really. Accommodation and food provided is excellent. Diving is organized very efficiently. Reliable equipment and dive masters.

One tiny problem was slow wifi, but this was soon forgotten on a paradise island.

One suggestion I would like to offer is perhaps offering a dive package with less dives, minimum 13 dives in 4 days is quite a lot.

We stayed at an independent longhuse, so I cant comment on the room quality. However I got my open water license there. The instructors, skippers and staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The diving was the best Ive experienced since I holidayed there in 2011, with close up encounters with turtles, cuttlefish, frogfish, squid and so many more awesome and wacky creatures. My instructor was named Steve and he was great fun, If he is still there I recommentd him.
Unfortunately the beach is not as pleasant as the diving, it was littered with rubbish sometimes so not great for picturesque relaxation, but the snorkelling just off the shore is lovely, green turtles close enough to touch and other gorgeous sea creatures.

When my friend and I booked into the Mabul Beach Resort we decided that although we couldn't enjoy the scuba diving we could still make the most of the location, as surface dwellers. We took a three locations snorkelling trip on the way out to the resort with a Scuba Junkie crew. This was a bit disappointing as two out of three sites were within easy access if the resort so paying for a boat seemed a bit pointless. The Scuba Junkie crew, Walter and Lucy, with Hans captaining the boat, were very professional and friendly, however and made sure everyone made the most of the experience. We had an amazing day but should have heeded their warning and applied sun screen before the first dive!! That sun burns!

The resort was fantastic: a lovely tropical feel with loads of wood and greenery with a simple design that was kept incredibly clean and well tended.

The meals were at specific times, buffet style (be there on time or miss out!) with a bar upstairs to catch the evening breeze while you watched the bats flew by.

My friend and I had an amazing time. We were privileged with the presence of 7 turtles - not just sighted by we swam with them and they seemed in no hurry to part company with us. The water is teeming with fish - just hop off the boat jetty and you'll be surrounded by them. I also saw a spotted ray, moray eel and manta ray. Not bad for a surface dweller in 4 swims.

It was sad that the scuba crew were not as friendly as the sea creatures. We were treated as invisible at best and in the way at worst. We were snubbed, stared through us, told to "Move!". We spent less and less time in the main area, feeling like we'd done it said something wrong to be so resoundingly ostracised. Unfortunately this really affected my stay and I would think twice about returning.
