“2nd trip and this places gets better!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2014

After our last stay last year we vowed to return - and what a reception.

It's not often your greeted as one of the family, but we couldn't have had a warmer reception that we did at the Old Hall.

The rooms are still fantastic, the place is immaculate and the breakfast is phenomenal.

We're counting down the days until our next trip!

Room Tip: It doesn't matter what room you're in - all 4 of them are superb!

Offered a two day break for a birthday treat, we chose the Old Hall Country House as we had never visited Staffordshire and the Potteries. We were very warmly welcomed by Simon and shown to our room, the King Charles 11, where this King apparently was hidden for a few days. Everything we could possibly need was provided including some complimentary sherry with beautiful glasses, and our walk in wardrobe comprised part of the 16th century Priest's room. Chocolate cake and tea were forthcoming in the Orangery where Gary joined us, from where we could see the delightful gardens which must be about 2 acres. After tea, they booked us in to the Swan with two Heads, a splendid pub about 3 miles away, where we enjoyed 2 excellent dinners, and then we were taken on a tour of the property. Chickens and ducks were much in evidence, promising the freshest of eggs in the morning, and we saw all the preparations for the next wedding. This is a wonderfully versatile fairly recently modernised B&B, with large really luxurious beds and linen giving the best night's sleep, but the best thing was the attentive generosity of our hosts throughout the stay.

We spent all the next day at the Wedgwood factory, where there is a fascinating museum, somewhere to have lunch, then a tour of the work in progress, and at the end there is the factory shop, and a chance to make your own pot. Nearby are lots of things to do, including Shugborough, home of the Lichfield family, and outside the house there is a pretty walk around a lake, which was a picture with all the daffodils and early spring blossoms.

After 2 fine breakfasts with new laid eggs and locally sourced produce, we were really sad to be leaving! All in all, an experience to treasure, and you won't find a better welcome or more thoughtful kindness anywhere! We are already planning our next visit.

Room Tip: we had the King Charles 11 room, but they all looked beautifully done up and comfortable

Thank you for taking the time to write this great review. We are very lucky to be in the area adjacent to the potteries and have many visitors such as yourselves visiting for this reason. The fact you enjoyed your stay with us so much is all the better and it really does make for a more relaxing experience to book the two nights.
Many thanks again and we do hope you will visit again soon.

We knew The Old Hall was the place for our wedding reception as soon as we visited. The downstairs is made up of a series of rooms around a central chimney and is clearly lovingly looked after. We wanted a small, laid back reception with a good DJ and from our first conversation with Gary we were confident he would deliver whatever we asked for!

We had a wedding breakfast for 48 people and an evening reception for 75 people. The whole day and evening ran seamlessly and we are so happy with everything Gary, Simon and their staff did!

We stayed in the Charles II Suite which was perfect. The modern and clean bathroom somehow works with the old beams and 4 poster in the bedroom. Everywhere was spotless and the bed linen is luxurious!

We were greeted with a delicious full English breakfast in the morning and to our surprise the bridal bouquet was decorating the table which was such a thoughtful touch.

Gary and Simon bend over backwards to make you feel at home and we couldn't bear to leave.

If you are looking for an charming and well managed wedding venue you will not be disappointed, just call Gary and have a chat about your ideas - he's completely unflappable!

Room Tip: The Queen Margaret Room has a lot of charm, especially if you love sloping wooden beams and floors...

Although everything was closed when we arrived after a long day's drive (owners on holiday and no one picked up our on line booking confirmation), everything was quickly up and running and the central heating, blow heaters and hot water bottles made it cosy in a couple of hours.

We were even offered the use of the bath in one of the other rooms, as all were unoccupied, which warmed and relaxed us even more. Full tea making facilities and a beautiful crystal decanter of port completed the warming effect. It was a very peaceful and comfortable night's rest in spite of trees being brought down by the storm that night.

There was no food to be had in the evening, so we enquired about local options. We did not want to drive anywhere if possible. We were warned off the pub a few doors down, and were directed to the Old Swan on the other side of the village. However we were tired, it was late, dark and inclement, so we took our chances with the nearest pub and happily found it to be absolutely fine for food, drink and ambiance, half expecting a hairy bikers hangout! Nothing of the sort.

Breakfast was excellent and we went on our way happy to have discovered this place. Feels very secluded but it easily accessible. Would return without hesitation despite the small hiccoughs.

Thank you so much for such an excellent review, despite as you say the initial problems with us being away and the Hall not being ready for you. We have learnt from this in the booking system for next time we are away. We're glad Annette who looks after the place for us whilst we are away soon got things under control which allowed you to enjoy you stay.
If you do manage to get up here again to stay with us then please call directly and we will ensure you are given a very warm welcome!

My Husband & I spent our wedding night here, A real treat. The room we stayed in (The King Charles II Suite) was sumptuous. Beautiful period features in the room & throughout the house. The room was quiet, had a great nights sleep. Great variety of choice on offer for breakfast the next morning, everything homemade and delicious. The hosts Garry & Simon are very friendly and make you feel very welcome.

A delightful stay!

Hope to stay again soon!

My fiance and i stayed here to see what it was like in view of booking our wedding.

Frankly, i have never seen or stayed in anywhere in the 23 countries i have visited, with better standards, service and as a building generally.
Gary our host was extremely friendly, sadly we didnt get to meet Simon this time, but everything was absolutely perfect.
The room, the Queen Margaret, was the nicest, most tastefully and expertly decorated room ive every stayed in.
The building oozes history, and the renovation work is extraordinary in its composure, every single item of decoration and restoration, from the wallpaper to the door knobs, is perfectly suited to the ambiance, this place has been decorated and furnished by people who really know good taste and have a true eye for detail and what fits where.
Our hosts attentiveness to detail is exceptional, from the bedsheets which were divine, to the finishing touches within the decor and trinkets.
Usually with any stay, there is something that could be better, but not in this case, we spent our entire stay feeling very special and extremely jealous! :)

The breakfast options are nothing short of perfect, i stayed in a £460 a night 5* plus in Geneva for 3 nights in 2011 and the old hall put it to shame, quite literally made it look like a travelodge by comparison.

We have seen lots of venues for our "small, intimate" wedding, but the second we walked into the Old Hall, our minds were made instantly, it is absolutely perfect.

We will absolutely stay again in the future and will 100% be booking our special day here.

There isnt a photograph that can do this place justice, you really must see it to believe it.

Room Tip: The Queen Margaret is fantasic - however, they are all fantastic.

I travel on a regular basis for both business and pleasure staying at hotels all over the world. My business travel allows me to stay in 5 star accommodation. This is the 6th time that I have chosen to stay at the old country house, which in my experience is a genuine 5 star accommodation. Beyond this the 5 star hotels that I stay at do not give me the personal service that Simon and Gary offer.
Because of this I now enjoy stays privately with my wife who also fallen in love with the old country house. The attention to detail from the Egyptian cotton sheets to the beautifully and tastefully dressed rooms is impeccable.
A stay at the old country house is a must. You will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: All the rooms are AMAZING! Our favourite is the King Charles because of the four poster bed but the...

Guys! The review is outstanding and thank you so much, it is always an added bonus of running guest accommodation when you meet such nice people and those people over a number of stays become your friends and we would class you both as good friends.
Thank you again and do come back soon x
