“Poor food and service”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

I invited my family of 10 for Sunday lunch for a retirement celebration as we were staying in the area for a week. I have been an ardent watcher of Hugh's TV programmes and was really looking forward to it. When we arrived staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was very pleasant. However, we waited at least 15 minutes before we were asked what drinks we wanted to order. The service was very slow and our waitress when she wasn't chatting to other members of staff, went missing in the middle of our meal so that the receptionist had to serve some of the food, there seemed to be no consistency with the service at all.

None of this would have mattered if the food was up to standard and it clearly wasn't. The starters were good but the roasts were not. Some of the main courses were served well after others had received theirs, so that we were eating our main course at different times. The roast potatoes were dry, the pork and lamb was tough and the leeks and green vegetable were inedible. We have all had better Sunday roasts for half the price and with better service. Our experience could have been so much better - very disappointed. I have to say that this is the first review I have ever written.

“Fresh and fun”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

Always a great experience, a meal at River Cottage...we started with a sharing board of veggie starters, which included beetroot houmous, so nice I have had to start making it at home, tempura'd onions and salad and flatbread. My only objection was the portions seemed a bit small. My husband's main of roast lamb made up for this, though his roast potatoes were a little on the dry side. My veggie main of butternut squash and crispy leeks in filo pastry with a chili tomato sauce was unusual and tasty, and, as a vegetarian I was happy to see two vegetarian choices.

“Lively, welcoming, a fun lunch on a wet day!”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

It was a cold wet windy day when we walked into the River Cottage Canteen with two friends who have a holiday cottage in nearby Beer. We were met immediately with a welcoming buzz of a warm, lively, friendly, very busy brasserie.

We started with caramelised halloumi, beetroot and toasted walnuts, with delicious bread and oil shared between the four of us. This really excited our taste buds! The look of the smoked and cured fishcakes on other diners' plates was impossible to resist, it was a great choice with a delicious beetroot and horseradish dressing.

We lingered at the table long after we had finished, chatting, people watching and enjoying the vibrant scene. Nobody hassled us, although they were busy the staff smiled and checked we had everything we wanted. Excellent food and delightful staff! I only wished we lived nearer to go back again soon!
