“Lovely atmosphere and good quality food”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

Went to Tytherleigh Arms on the recommendation of Simon at Swan Hill House B & B. Met with a warm welcome into an old pub which has been tastefully turned into a good quality restaurant. The pigeon breast and the guinea fowl terrine starters were excellent and the main courses were very good quality and reasonably priced. The assiette de desserts for 2 was shared between 4 of us and was plenty as well as being a great idea.

“Charming pub but fell short on quality of the food”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

The amuse-bouche (Poncy name for appetiser) was outstanding and really set up what we expected was to be a great meal. Sadly it went a bit downhill from there. The broccoli and Stilton soup wasn't very strong in flavour and wasn't very inspiring. The fowl and rabbit terrine was very average, especially when you are charging 7 quid for it! The main course I had fish pie. Well, I sadly couldn't find hardly any fish in it - mainly just mashed potato and carrot. Again, if the dish was half the price I really wouldn't have minded but when you are charging 13GBP you really shouldn't be that tight on ingredients, and you should probably put a bit of fish in (even cod if you have too). My partner had the sirloin steak. He joked it tasted a bit like the weatherspoons pub steak. I tried it.....it sadly did! The desert was their saving grace. We had the desert platter for 2 and most of the sample deserts were good. The staff were attentive, although found it strange to be offered a drink on arrival, so I ended up with a pint of beer and then a red wine 3 minutes later. I would have preferred to have sat down and looked at the menu before ordering drinks. Not quite sure if the landlord was just trying to be helpful or make extra money from drinks. I'd like to think not the latter as all the staff were really friendly and helpful.

Really not to up their game on the main courses if they want to keep up their number one spot on trip advisor. Either that or seriously reduce their prices because the money spent per head on food did not equal the quality we were expecting.

I always like to give places a second chance, but I won't be ordering the same main courses again that's for sure.

“Birthday lunch”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Despite arriving horribly late we were made to feel extremely welcome by the team; we were immediately offered drinks & a well presented incredibly varied seasonal lunch menu presented by friendly knowledgeable staff. The Tytherleigh had been recommended by colleagues & did not disappoint; attention to detail permeates, beautifully decorated, flawless presentation & superb food. Having put in an appearance at the end of a lunch run it would have been no surprise to feel a sense of hustle. What happened was entirely the opposite, the team worked around us unobtrusively or stopped to chat; one of the best birthday lunches I have had!

“City service and atmosphere, Country character and prices”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

After hearing great things from friends in the area, we popped in for a drink and a look at the menu midweek on the way back from work, wow! Although you can see the love care and attention that has been put into the building from the outside we were was not expecting the level of design inside. It felt incredibly welcoming with candles aplenty, hand painted chairs, refectory table, wing backs with a big old trunk to rest our drinks; simply stunning.

As we walked in although busy we were immediately greeted by the young team, when we approached the bar the barman asked us if we were joining them for any food that evening when we told him we were just there for some drinks, that was not a problem. My partner was offered an impressive array of gin for her G&T which was made with a real flair, the recommended pint of the local lager did not disappoint even though its name now escapes me; yet another reason to return. Although it was the height of service we did not feel rushed and were given a menu to peruse. The menu in a word was 'superb', it was well written and full of seasonal inventive dishes, we were watching as the food came out and cross referencing our menu. In all we were at the Tytherleigh Arms for around 45 minutes, in that time we witnessed great service had some excellent drinks and felt a real buzzing city restaurant atmosphere, which you do not expect from deepest darkest East Devon. We will be back for a full three courses and a few bottles of wine.

“Pretty good”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

In an area not very well served for good restaurants we ate here twice in a week. It was good on both ocassions although service was noticebly slower Friday evening when it was busier.

Fairly limited menu but food was good and well presented. Good range of local beers and not a bad wine list either.

Staff were good and helpful.

Booking is probably sensible Fridays and weekends.
