“Friendliest site we found”
Reviewed 9 June 2014 via mobile

We rolled up here having had an eventful journey, being "bogged" in the sand round lake Taupo and having been stopped by the police because a lorry driver thought that a Jucy van shouldn't be able to overtake it! ( we were let off with a smile as we are an older couple not a van of youths!), to a really friendly welcome.

We made ourselves at home, cooking facilities were good, tv worked (not that we needed it) and the place was peaceful.

Woke up refreshed the next morning, fairly surprised to see their pet pig walking round the site, including the kitchen (not sure about that). The owners are so friendly and knowledgeable about the area that nothing mattered. We went on two walks which they recommended and then to see the glow worms...fabulous but a bit spooky being so dark and so remote....but worth it, we were the only people there and free to visit!

Don't be put off with the wildlife, its a great place!

We parked up our motor home here on a roomy pitch with power. It's a super site with great facilities and amenities. The owners are extra helpful and informative. The herb garden - help yourself - is an admirable extra, and the riverside location a treat (although watch out for those sandflies!). Right next to a lovely walk through native woodland. One of the very best sites we stayed at on our road trip in North Island. We really liked the personal touch and the tranquility.

We spent a tranquil night here in our motorhome. We were very warmly welcomed, offered additional extras for our cooking (including from the awesome herb garden!) and were able to pick our site. The kitchen, showers and bathrooms are immaculate. Showers are excellent pressure, bath mats add a nice touch that most campsites don't offer. Microwaves and a camper swap-shop are available in the kitchen.

Spent a night at the Holiday Park before going on the Forgotten Highway Adventure. Very welcoming host. We had a campervan and a cabin for our party of 4. Good standard of accommodation and all facilities were of a high standard. A well equipped kitchen has a very nice shaded outdoor eating area and tubs of herbs that we were invited to use (and did). We left our campervan parked there for two nights connected to the power for a very reasonable charge. We also left our overnight bag (with medication in) sitting on a table. The very kind hosts took the bag to the Forgotten World Adventure office and it was sent down to us the next morning for which we were most grateful.

This place is convenient, and has all the amenities - kitchen, BBQ, showers, power, water, laundry (extra but much cheaper than in town), and dumping station. Everything is included in the price - so no surprises. The area is quite open so not much privacy.

We stayed two nights in the "Kiwi Cottage" (shown in the picture above) and it was very comfortable. The cottage was great, as it rained a fair bit while we were there and we were happy not to be in a tent!

We did the Timber Trail bike ride, so this was our base and it was perfect. Paul from Epic Cycle Adventures came to the camp, picked up our bikes, took a group to the top of the mountain and we made our way down (6+ hours). He then brought the bikes back to the camp. All very well organised and fun. A good outing if you are sort of fit and want to see some beautiful scenery.

Spent 2 nights here 1 before doing the Whanganui journey in a tent and one after in a cabin. I have stayed in hundreds of campsites over the years and this is one of the best.
Only bad point was no free wifi best touch was the free herb and veggy garden
