Had a nice mother/daughter trip to Gengenbach earlier this month. The property is a short walk from the train station down the main street of the town. Upon check in, I asked for the Kronus card, which allows travel throughout the Black Forest for free to hotel guests. Our hotel room was tastefully decorated and very spacious, with beamed ceilings, comfortable beds, a balcony with table and chairs, and a great bathroom. The breakfast was incredible. A vast assortment of breads, meats, cheeses, cereals, etc. was available in the morning, included in the price of the room. The ladies we came in contact with who worked there did not speak much English, but that is exactly why I booked the hotel, and Gengenbach in general! The town is a beautiful way to immerse yourself in the beauty and culture which is that area in Germany. Great stay!

We thought this was an excellent hotel, reasonably priced, very clean and well kept with high quality surroundings, furnishings and decoration throughout. We were given a wonderful welcome on arrival by a lady who did not speak English but seemed to have a great gift for communication because we all understood all of her explanations without difficulty! A good breakfast too with plenty of choice in pleasant surroundings.
We enjoyed a very good evening meal in the restaurant belonging to the hotel a few hundred metres away where again we were made very welcome by the extremely helpful staff. Food was well cooked and there was plenty of choice.

We chose to base ourselve in Gengenbach for three nights and visit other parts of the black forest from there. If you stay in Gengenbach you will get from the hotel on arrival a Konus card which allows you to travel for free by train and bus within the black forest area. We were happy with our stay in the Pfeffermuhle Hotel - the rooms were quiet, clean and spacious, the breakfast was scrumptious and the service was good and helpful (even though the lady manning the reception counter did not speak much english). As some of the other posters have mentioned here, this hotel appears to serve mostly German speaking tourists but we did not find it an issue. For a self guided itinerary in English covering Gengenbach we headed to the tourist information office in the town hall area (you can't miss the signposts). The hotel itself is very close to the start of a walking route up to St Jakob's Chapel which offers good views of Gengenbach from a hill covered with vineyards.

As part of a tour around the Black Forest area we chose to visit Gengenbach and stay at the Pfeffermuhle hotel. We are glad we chose both. The town is charming and well worth an overnight visit. It as a beautiful old town centre with some excellent restaurants, notably the Pfeffermuhlle the same name as the hotel. The Pfeffermuhle Hotel was perfect. Very well located close to the old town, with plenty of free parking and clean, spacious and comfortable rooms. The included buffet breakfast was fairly traditional but perfectly adequate. The staff were all friendly and very helpful. We highly recommend Gengenbach and the Pfeffermuhle Hotel.

This is a nice quiet place to stay, but it is geared for German speaking tourists. The owner does not speak English so can't really answer any questions. The hotel guide is only in German. The Black Forest is a good place to visit if you do not want to see any American tourists. We spent 8 days there and did not see any! The town is quite nice to walk around in the daytime, but really shuts down in the evening. Not too many restaurants even stay open for dinner and the shops are closed. We took a small bag of laundry to be washed and the owner didn't speak English. We made the mistake of assuming the price would be reasonable! It turned out to be 44 Euros (or $57.00!!) Gengenbach is a good base for exploring other towns by train. Tourists can travel by train and bus for free within the region.

Should you consider a short stay in the Black Forest or just an overnight stay on a long journey, I would strongly consider Pfeffermuhle in Gengenbach.
The town is small but rather lovely and this hotel nakes an ideal place to stay. Very clean and comfortable and has a reasonable restaurant approx 400 metres away.
The bedrooms are of decent size with extremely comfortable beds and the hotel is exceptionally quiet.

We enjoyed our stay at the Pfeffermuhle Hotel. The rooms were clean and pleasant and the breakfasts were served in a bright and airy dining room. There was plenty of choice. The man who greeted us on arrival was not the most friendly and welcoming but the rest of the staff and particularly the lady who served breakfast were very friendly. We ate at the Pfeffermuhle restaurant which is separate from the hotel and the food and atmosphere were good. It has a nice outside terrace. I thinkj you need to book at busy times. Overall a very good family run hotel and very reasonable prices.
