If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful resort on beautiful Kefalonia, you can do no better than the Irinna Hotel. Greek hospitality, combined with good, clean accommodation offers the holiday-maker an authentic Greek experience. The relaxed atmosphere of this family-run hotel offers a retreat from the hub-bub of busier resorts.
The sandy beaches of Ammes, Avithos and Ai Helis are within walking distance, although I wouldn't recommend walking to Avithos in July/August heat! All beaches are safe bathing, with Avithos boasting two Tavernas on the beach and a beach bar. Ammes and Ai Helis are quieter and within easier walking distance from the hotel.
All rooms have a small refrigerator and air-conditioning - free of charge - unlike most hotels who make a charge for these essential items. In true Greek style, the bedding and towels are changed daily and the rooms kept spotlessly clean. Staff at the hotel are polite and helpful and most speak English and take trouble to provide guests with a high level of Greek service.
For those who like the shade, rooms at the back of the hotel overlook the beautiful mountains and natural beauty of the Island. The 2nd floor is the quietest in the hotel and many English guests choose these rooms - being used to a colder climate - where the rooms are cooler in the heat of the day.
Sea view rooms at the Irinna Hotel have spectacular views to the Peninsular of Kefalonia where beautiful Xi beach offers swimming in the crystal clear Ionian sea. Take the ferry from Argostoli (about 8 kms from the hotel) to Lixouri - a 'must' for holiday-makers to the Island. I could do the trip every day and never tire of the beauty. With the early morning mist over the mountains as you sail from Argostoli to Lixouri, it is easy to imagine how the Greek Myths were created!
The small town of Lixouri offers the holiday-maker local shops, swimming and sun-bathing - not to mention cakes, gateaux and baklava to die for in the Patisserie in the square. Closer to home, for the adventurous, hire a car from Greekstones in Svoronata - a short walk from the hotel - and explore the Island. You won't be disappointed!
The swimming pool is a good size - ideal for those who enjoy a good swim. The beautiful gardens are awash with colour from June to August, with trees giving plenty of shade in the south facing position.
For those who like to dine al fresco, there are many Tavernas and restaurants of a high standard in the local area, some with Greek nights where you can learn Greek dancing and join in with the the locals. Alternatively, you can eat at the hotel where the food and portions are more than ample, fresh and well cooked.
I have stayed at the Irinna three times within two years, so that tells you how much I like it! But then I love the Greek way - friendly, hospitable and helpful - and you couldn't do better if you want a relaxing retreat away. See my photos below from this year's trip!
The Irinna is equivalent to a three star hotel. Those who want more luxurious surroundings will have to search further afield where hotels are usually in more populated areas. The Irinna Hotel's peace, quiet and restorative atmosphere is worth more than any 5 star hotel to me!
I can't wait to go back - I hope to meet you there!
