In July 1971 I was stopping in Gletsch to see two Canadian friends of mine that were working here. Fortunately, one had returned home & I took over his job at the little kiyosk on the terrace. This was the most glorious summer for me; living in a beautiful room in the adjacent tourist hotel with down duvet, pillows and mattress. My room looked out on the glacier, was made up for me everyday and I got three meals a day from the hotel. I was offered the job of winter security, to stay all winter, but travelling called me away. Two years later I'm back on my honeymoon and my bride can't believe everyone in town knows me. Many of the staff had returned and even the post master remembered me. We celebrated my wife's birthday there and the maitre d' generously supplied a beautiful bottle of wine. The pastry chef, a dear friend, made a birthday cake and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. When we went to check out, the front desk said we had staff rates. Fantastic. This place is a step back in history with a beautiful pristine building and fantastic food. A great place to stop if you're on the road between Brig and the Furka Pass. I highly recommend it.
